In doing research on what skills and ships to plan for (I am currently a Prospector that wants to rat as a second profession) I am curious....what is the difference between getting a freighter and/or an industrial ship? I am sure there is a difference, I just get lost when trying to compare the blueprints. Maybe some of you more seasoned folks can shed some light, thanks!

freighters a capital ship, and erm a fair bit larger than an industrial/hauler. It also requires a lot more skills, and is a shed load more expensive.

Edited by: Ithoriel on 13/07/2007 16:05:59 There are basically 3 classes of Hauler in EVE.
T1 Industrials are lightly armoured boxes with thrusters. Fine in high sec carrying low value stuff.
T2 industrials are Transports. Basically tougher versions of the T1 equivalent. Use these for more expensive stuff than you would put in a T1 industrial.
Freighters are capital sized boxes with thrusters - with huge cargo bays but slow to move and sluggish to turn in an new direction. Carry lots of valuable stuff in them and chances are someone will try to pop them, even in hi-sec space. Takes effort to take one down though.
I use an Impel most of the time, a Prorator if I'm somewhere I might get warp scrambled and a Freighter mostly for "moving house" - bit of a waste of a Freighter tbh
That help any?

Edited by: Falkorren on 13/07/2007 16:15:20 Thanks! Yes, this does help.....
One more question......does the T1 and T2 designations cover everything? What I mean is, does every ship fall into either T1 or T2? Take my little Bantam for example....I know it is not a T2 ship, but is it considered a T1 ship?
Thanks again!

Yes, it's tech 1 if it isn't tech 2.
Then there's the Basic gear, which are weaker variants of tech 1 mods that take next to no skills to equip.

The biggest difference between a industrial and a freighter:
Industrial: 3,000 - 40,000 m3 cargo Freighter: 750,000 - 1,000,000 m3 cargo
As already mentioned, there are differences between T1 industrials and T2. Also, Freighters are very, very slow and consequently very vulnerable to attack.

First, there's civilian equipment. It's worthless and should be forgotten ASAP.
Then, there's Tech 1. Ships and modules fall into this category.
Above there are named modules, still considered T1 but ranging from slightly better to T2-equal. While there are no 'named ships', there are faction versions of some of them. Stabber Fleet Issue or Caldari Navy Hookbill are examples of those. Then, there are pirate faction ships. Check out the required skills to fly a Worm or a Rattlesnake to get an idea.
Then, there is Tech 2. While T2 modules are basically better versions of T1/named, T2 ships are something else entirely. Each T2 ship is based upon a hull of its T1 version (the 3D model looks the same, bar paint scheme) but with completely different role, bonuses and capabilities.
You may also encounter facion, complex and officer modules. Those are extremely - and I mean it - expensive but vastly superior items which can be obtained during the game.

Another point of freighters that I did not see mentioned above (I admit i did skim a little, so if I missed this sorry).
But... Freighters are not able to put items in their hold while in space, this combined with the extremely slow speed and total lack of defense make the freighter a very specialized ship which is only good for moving extremely high volumes of items from one station to another, while an indy or a transport are quite a bit more versatile, but have considerably less cargo space. -=^=-

I think they can. Wasn't that something added with Rev 2?

only from space into a general freight container afaik...
anyway... another important thing to relise is that freighters have no slots... it is impossible to fit ANYTHING on it... no reppers, no hardners, no boosters, no guns... nothing... ------------- CCP employee: "look this is broken, lets fix it" later: "\o/ yay, fixed" result: the thing that was broken is still broken, in the process they also broke some other stuff... There are two limitations to this:
1) they can launch Outpost eggs so that they can be built in space.
2) They can pick up goods from Freighter Wrecks.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.
