I heard people talk about Jita as this big commerce hub where you go to get the best prices, so I go there to fit a new ship and everything is mad expensive... is it just a place to *sell* stuff? If so, where's the best place to *buy* stuff, specifically ship equipment?

Jita is a major market hub. People sell their items there, so it is also the best place to buy whatever you need. :)

It's not "mad" expensive there, I find most things to be pretty cheap imo. Cheaper than the systems i frequent when doing agent missions, anyways.
IMO, it became a hub because of it's location, it has a couple of trade routes around it, and is within a few jumps of four regions, making it a convenient stopping point. It's the free market nature of Eve that made it a big commerce hub. "Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes" |

K so maybe it's just coincidence that the couple items I need were really expensive there?

Generally speaking the large amount of competition in Jita drives prices down. However many prices on very cheap goods are relatively expensive compared to other areas because producers know that people will pay the higher price in return for the convienence of getting everything they need in one station, rather than having to travel elsewhere to get a better deal. --------------

Well, tbh, a trader would explain it better if they wanted to tell you, but they prolly wouldn't. In a nutshell, the loot people find during missions gets dumped in the agents station on the cheap because they don't want to travel around for a good price. The traders buy it cheap, go to Jita, and sell all of this stuff at market value. If you were to fit a ship at Jita, you would pay market value, but if you were to fit a ship in a mining system, you wouldn't find all the things you needed in the same station, if at all. To avoid all the jumping around, traders consolidate the goods at a hub.
re: expensive stuff: Fair market value is determined by whatever is in highest demand. If you want something but think it's too expensive, that is because everyone is buying out that item. You may be able to find it cheaper a few jumps away, but again, you have to go to the items. Jita's goods are always going to be around fair market value UNLESS there is a price war or price fixing going on. "Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes" |

Jita is for crashing your client when you enter local, making you wait 10 minutes to change sessions from space to in station, fill your chat logs with "WTS ****** 250 mil" then "WTB ***** (same item as above) 10 mil"...

When you say that they were really expensive there, do you mean that the price was higher than others in the region? Because in general the opposite is true. It could be that the items you are after are just expensive items. I guess this also depends on your definition of expensive. -=^=-

Generally, consumer goods like ships and modules are cheaper in Jita, while things used for production (minerals, salvage materials, etc. ... ) are more expensive. ------------------

Filthy lies! Or at least, it depends on your definition of 'best'. You can buy things a hell of a lot cheaper away from Jita, and sell them for more as well (economics is weird like that). Jita is the most convenient place to buy whatever you're looking for, it's the Wall Street of EVE.

Totally .
Jita's also the place where most rare items are sold, in addition to being the premier market hub in EVE. Oh, and for reference, Jita wasn't made for this purpose - it came about naturally as players decided to sell there more and more after the previous player-created hub of Yulai had its system links messed with a bit .

I never bother with Jita unless it is to save a few hundred thousand on something.
Lets face it, it's easy enough to make money in Eve just to buy local.
New people may find it hard btu then they should get a salvager ship to clean up after missions. -----------------------------------------------

You do get the odd time when items such as bpo's and some non caldari frigates have been priced like 300,000,000 instead of 300,000 it's basically just to catch people out but most stuff is very cheep there because of the competition

It's the EvE analogue to the "Vince Lombardi Memorial Rest Stop" on the New Jersey Turnpike. It's got what you need...but not a nice place to stay for very long .
