I might be one of the few but I did enjoy (in some SM way) looking for complexes, I was very disapointed how this "on board scanner" changed everything.
I'm all for easier exploration content for people without the skills.
But because all these random (usually not so good) complexes show up as Unknown, its often very hard to determin if a more worth while complex is in a system.
Add to this the fact that a lot of the 'easy to find' complexes are not despawning correctly -or- are not worth doing.
I would like to see this changed. I personally see two ways of showing some love to the 'old school' complex scanners like myself.
1) Instead of grouping the unknowns when scanning with a multispectral probe, show all the unknowns (and other types too) in a system and include some type of sensor strength. This will give an indication if a worth-while unknown is in system.
2) Change the signature type of all the complexes which should not be scannable with the on board scanner.
At least then we'll know if there's actually a reason to spend time scanning all the planets, before waisting a ghazilion quest probes on a 15-signature 'on board scanner' complex.

Encounter sites are being changed SoonÖ to use a different scanner category than exploration sites. The on board scanner will then be changed to only be able to find that scan category and leave the cosmic signatures to the probe jockeys. --- Honest officer, the dwarf was on fire when I got here! Maybe informing the new players of the operation of the on board scanner could be useful too.
While encounter rewards are low, they aren't so low not to be interesting for new players, but I find a lot of sites in high security. My impression is that no one of the player that have started in the last months know of the OBS, and so they don't try scanning.

Does the tutorial tell them to travel faster between systems by warp to gates at 0km? No... but they pick it up eventually don't they. --------------------------------------------- Need cheap and safe rearch done? I just came back to the game again a little while ago, from a 1.5 year "vacation". First I didn't remember these complexes but after I started to do some missions the memory about them slowly started to surface again.
I understand part of what is written here but not the whole picture. Do I need to pilot a covert op ship with special modules fited and with special skills. (Very vivid description I know...)
Since there are some disputes about how the scanning works and how it should work could someone explain, as simple as possible, how I find complexes now and what this 3/10, 7/10 and 0.2344 (Think 0.2344 was from another thread about this topic) is all about? Let's pretend that I just started an account and I want to do some of these complexes. What would be the steps that I would make from start to finish? What do I look out for? (The 3/10 seems to be a way to tell how hard a complex is, but do you know this before you go in? Is there any warnings about that the complex could be too tough for the current ship type that I would be piloting or such?) ------------------------- "At one time they had a flourishing empire with a level of mechanical excellence never before or since seen anywhere." - Lets bring this era back to our people. |
