The local Councils should be supplying sandbags.
But if the water is that bad, the best thing you can do is it let it in.
Holding back the water puts extra pressure on the outside walls and could cause extensive damage to your house.
Get everything upstairs, and turn of the power and phone your insurence company.

I watch the news now and feel sorry for so many people in the Uk, what is your government doing about it? I never remember it being this bad

i'm sorry to hear that you guys are flooded. being stranded is very unsettling.
the rain seems to be everywhere. texas has been the greenest it has ever been in my life this summer. the chain-link fence is about to fall over from the weight of the morning glory vine growing on it.

The weather over the past month has been really really concerning actually. I live down in Cornwall, my house is about 400 feet above sea level with a gentle slope from where I am out towards the cliffs a mile or so away so no real chance of flooding, but the rain..
last week was ok but for the two weeks before it it rained every single day sometimes only for a short period of time but it did rain every day and it has been the same this week. It's actually raining right now as I write this. It's really bizarre.
I feel awful for the people who are really getting the worst of the flooding though, there's just no let up in this weather for them to get their homes sorted again.

Cardiff here, all is good. The rivers held and the barrage controlled the Taff and Channel. Also Its pretty good living on the top of a hill.

Originally by: Patch86 How's everyone holding up? Looks like its another serious one today. Most of my town (Swindon) seems to have stopped dead for the day. All the roads are gridlocked, trains are all cancelled, the motorway is closed (and according to some, parts of it have been washed away), half the town's power is out, and rumour has it my GF's family's house may be flooded under a foot of water.
That'd be "O****".
Anyone else being affected?
PS: Anyone know where you buy sandbags?

Tell them to send some money to the Labour party, as then they might be made a pier.
Just to cover myself a bit here, the CPS have said that no charges are to be brought and I'm sure the allegations were completely unfounded. *cough*
My only suffering from the floods was an extra 10 minute wait for my train home from Cardiff. Didn't envy the people trying to get to London - waiting for hours to get home isn't the best way to end a week. Still, I suppose its better than waiting and getting home to a house-wide swimming pool..

Re Sandbags - try B&Q?
The countryside between Chorley and Blackburn is a bit of a mess, lot of flooding at the bottom of Withnell, not much in Brinscall cause it's on the top of a hill, by 'eck!

Gordon Brown was questioned about it today (actually yesterday now, Sunday) on whether he still planned to build houses on flood plains and he said yes. So clearly no change of government policy. Also, David Cameron said that the Government last year made cut backs in funding for flood defences. That's why, even though the councils had a week's foreknowledge that this would happen, they were unable to cope.
OK, there ain't much the Government can do about the rain; but there's a lot they can do in order to be better prepared for something like this.

suffering from floodings in the past 2 winters here in portugal (once I don't know how the hell I even managed to come back home from work tbh...), I know how it is.
I live in a small town that is practically on the top of a hill, but the Tagus river is a few km away from me, and, as usual with freakin' heavy rain, the river flooded the plains around it.
...and just to think that 3 years ago, we were suffering from a 3-year drought. ---
