I was thinking about how the empires are supposed to be at war....and about how we could use that to bring more excitement to the game.
Here's my idea:
Have an event once every 6 hours or so at a border system (IE: Between Gallente and Caldari) where there will be an "empire battle". It will show up like a deadspace complex. This complex will show up on both sides of the border. (Alternatively, you could have "empire agents" in those systems that message you when a battle is about to happen and where to meet them......you can go and join the battle like a mission and when you're done for the day, go and tell them....you'll get a reward based upon how long you were in the battle). Whoever wants to (or whoever has positive standing with the empire who's side their on) can jump to this complex. After a certain preparatory period (30 mins or 1 hour), anyone within 100km of the complex will be warped to an area in that system (or the opposing system) where the battle will happen.
Now, give the both empire sides a bunch of ships (battleships/dreads/carriers mostly) which are NPCs. You are allied with whichever side you jumped in with and against whatever side you didn't. So now, you have a ton of players on both sides and a bunch of NPCs from the empires on both sides.
First side to destroy the other side's NPC ships wins!
You may attack both the NPCs and players on the other side without a security hit but you may not destroy pods (maybe bring in CONCORD if you do). You have an lot of tactical choices to make such as attacking the other side's NPCs or their players who might be repairing those NPCs or attacking yours. Or, you can bring in a support ship or command ship and boost everyone's capabilities.
The goal is for these battles to last 3-6 hours. You get LARGE standings boosts with the empire who you fight with. It would definitely be an expensive venture (you'd probably lost at least 1 ship) but it would be a BLAST. No to mention, this would bring capital fleet battles to the masses of EVE. This, one of the most incredible features of EVE, is probably experienced by less than 5% of players (probably less than 1%) which is rediculous! Not to mention the expense of these PvP battles.
So, combine the fun parts of LVL 5 missions with empire wars and you have an excellent scenario. Let me know what you think! Creator of the Eve Market Monitor

I think the general idea is ok, but I can see it rapidly dissolving into a huge lag fest, esp once some griefing idiot starts poping pods.

Edited by: GndAdmiralThrawn on 22/07/2007 20:51:32 The lag would be no different than a PvP fleet battle (although that's pretty laggy). Still, it would allow for people who can't experience that out in 0.0 to do it in High Sec.
Also, the podding wouldn't be any different than any other time you are vulnerable in a pod. Not to mention there will be so many targets it would be hard to spot the pods and they can warp very quickly. And CONCORD will kill the grievers. Creator of the Eve Market Monitor

Great idea though perhaps not in ded space, every time a battle is about to happen in the local system, constelation or maby region a message comes up in ALL your chat channels to let you know, to apply to the battle you have agents at every system gate OUTSIDE the system thats about to have the battle, so at each gate there is a e.g. gellente agent and a caldari agent. Once you apply you jump in after getting the co-ord's and warp to the location, how ever there is only about 30mins to apply and the co-ords given are meerly prep-locations when the battle starts you are auto-matically put in a fleet with both people and NPC's. Then you warp to the battle location.
Once it has started noone else can come in you can warp out however and they could make pods invinsible or unlockable. However these might be very laggy so the ammount of people that take part in it are limited.
But you can get another chance later on and there is a certain amount of fleet battles you can take part in for a x amount of time.

Concord creates huge lag, now try and think like a griefing little pest who just wants to annoy as many people as possible to ruin eveyone elses fun. You have a fleet battle (lag) in a busy empire system (more lag) with quantities of NPC's involved (even more lag) what do you do? Simple you get in there in a cheap ship and start busting up pods so Concord comes (lots lots more lag)

Maybe we could somehow restrict people from targeting pods just for these battles or something similar. Or maybe before the battle begins, EVE somehow warps or jumps you to an area that is on its own node, to reduce lag.
I like how everyone has basically said the only problem with the idea is lag. Looking beyond that small caveat, what do you think of the idea itself? Creator of the Eve Market Monitor

Meh, feels too phony. Besides, the best PvP in EvE is about a 10v10 fight.
And there's the matter of sweet gear making all the difference. I've always believed that T1 cruisers are the most nuanced and balanced ship class in EvE. If the Agent "recruited" you for a militia, and issued you a ship from the corporate hangar equipped with the modules you chose from a list of T1, vanilla hardware, then I think some very cool fights could be had.
Skillpoints will of course be a factor, but if you're in a Stabber, the difference betwee 3M SP and 13M SP is not that great, in terms of performance. Ten dudes in a mix of Minmatar and Gallente cruisers versus ten dudes in a mix of Amarrian and Caldari cruisers would be an awesome, low-lag brawl. Warp everyone to an acceleration gate, then shove them through en masse to emerge 35km from the other squad in an arena that allows MWD and warping, but which cannot be reached from outside (so if you bail, you lose and can't return).
If you pay for the mods you equip from the corp hangar and then that money goes into the pot, to be distributed to players as they destroy one another's ships, then it would be a good way to "bet" on the outcome without actually being either an isk sink or flooding the market.

the tech1 cruiser idea sounds pretty good. Should hopefully get more people into pvp.

That does sound extremely cool, although a little different from what I imagined.
I'm trying to combine aspects of PvP into a large fleet battle that has lower risk than actual low sec or 0.0 PvP battles. Sounds like you might have figured it out! Creator of the Eve Market Monitor
