I understand these spawns to occur random and usually generate some nice loot. However, I have some questions: 1. Do faction spawns only occur in 0.0 space, only in low sec and 0.0 space or anywhere? 2. Do they ever spawn with multiple ship together or just solo? 3. Can you somehow increase the chances of getting a faction spawn? (like killing all normal belt rats in the system, or just before or after DT...) 4. Is there a list telling what factions/ships spawn in which region? In my (limited) personel experience one region pretty often gave carrier (indies) spawns while the other region did not. Just a coincidence? Hope someone can help. Thx!

2. I dont think a faction spawn comes with extra ships with him. If a belt has 2 battlecruiser + 1 frig spawn, they can spawn as 1 faction bc + normal bc + frig
3. Dont think so, its totally random. ( Higher chance in low security areas most likely )
4. will be a very rough estimation but : serpentis rats around gallente space guristas rats around caldari space blood raider + sansha between amarr and caldari space angels around minmaatar space

I've killed Shadow Serpentis (getting nice 'low-grade snake' implants) in high-sec systems before, so they definitely occur everywhere. ------------------

Pretty much on the ball there.

I've killed True Sansha rats in .6 space before.
Each time they've spawned with 1 or 2 other non-faction ships.
Sometimes nice loot/salvage, other times it's utter crap.

I've taken a dread spawn in high sec. It dropped a 125 mil implant. I took a dread BS down last weekend. It was with two other BSs and had a 10.5 mil bounty. Loot was better then average, but not OMG I'M RICH good. You can make them show up faster if you clear spawns, but they are so rare you will make more isk chaining.

Would this imply that hunting belt rats in systems with few belts (and thus easier to clear all belts) have a higher chance of getting a faction spawn?

As I recall, there are 2 ways to maximize your profits while ratting.
1) Clear all belts system wide. 2) Chain the "good" spawns.
I'm pretty sure that the number of belts in the system is a factor in the faction spawn rate. i.e. - lower chance of faction spawns in systems with few belts. However, I'm honestly not sure on that one.
I do know that chaining typically precludes faction spawns. I have not heard of a faction ship replacing a normal ship in a chained spawn, much like you cannot chain faction spawns.
Definition for any newbies: Chaining Spawns - A spawn may consist of any combination of ships (sec status appropriate) coming into the belt. Chaining involves destroying the high-bounty ships in a spawn but leaving the low-bounty (weaker) ships alive. When the spawn timer comes around again the game will replace the ships that had been destroyed. This is opposed to clearing all rats in the belt, which allows the game to generate a new spawn that may consist of completely different (possible less valuable overall) ships. --- Wherever you go, there you are.

Best strategy depends on the quality of 0.0 (close to -1.0 is best), amount of belts in system and your own ship (how quick you can kill the spawns) but also the amount of time you have.
If you have limited time chaining is not so usefull. If you have got several hours of ratting try this one: Chain all belts, except for belts with less then 1M of value in the BS's, kill these all. This value depends a bit on the quality of the system. Just cycle through the belts over and over again. Everytime you do one cycle kill the 2 worst spawns (remember them from the cycle before) and chain the rest.
Most probably you will be faster ratting then the respawn time. Just take a neighbour system to rat in also. Leave some of the wrecks around so friendlies you know you are ratting.
If you don't have an alt anchor a few giant cans or a pos in system, else just take an alt in an industrial to put your loot in and bring and carry some extra torps. I'm using a Raven myself, for the simple reason i have 2 high slots leftover for a tracor + salvager. While I kill the BS'es I do the looting and salvaging, after killing i just move on. Leftover wrecks you can loot/salvage the next time you visit the belt. Always watch your torps closely. Because they take time to arrive to the target you can predict after a while when there are enough torps underway. Just stop firing and cycle to the next target.
This way you can easily make 20-30M per hour (after one or two hours optimizing the belts) plus loot, what is about the same if you sell all usefull modules. Offcourse al numbers differ per region, just find your own optimal.
Good luck ratting, but don't do it too much, it's really boring and there are better ways to make money in 0.0

Chaining is fine if you're after the steady ISK. If you want those faction or hauler spawns, it's probably best to pop everything. Then, instead of those 1M+ BS's respawning, you get something new and random... maybe a hauler/faction/officer spawn.

And remember those "new" Encounter sites are supposed to give a higher chance of a faction/officer spawn.
1. Go to a planet 2. Bring up your on-board scanner and search for cosmic signature 3. If you get lucky after 30seconds a deadspace (or more) appears on the scanner. 4. Clear the rats, and as more appears clear those too, and if ur lucky the last spawn will be a faction/officer.
I got lucky my first time trying this andgot a Dread Guristas whom dropped a BPO.
Don't get to excited tho, it has never happened again, numerous Encounters after :) -- With a license to carebear. |
