T2 is better, but there is profit in t1 named.
The difference is, instead of hauling T2 from large production centers to outer systems with no supply, you're going to be hauling from outer systems where 0.0 people dump t1 named, and haul it to big systems with low supply.
Of course trading is never confined to strict rules, and I'm sure there are other ways to make $$ with t1 named items, that's just a guideline...

Some t1 items have profit in buy low/sell high trade schemes. Though more is to be made obviously from producing that t1 yourself. The named items can often be bought from 0.0 and hauled back to empire for re-sale, or sometimes 0.0 folks haul it up to Jita and sell it in bulk to those looking to resell it.
I myself trade t2 and there is much profit to still be had in it despite some saying otherwise. Faction items, I imagine would work out the same way, you either obtain via ratting/missioning yourself, as most people who come across those items know what they're doing and often won't sell it to some trader for cheap.

I used to trade named items within one region (low buy, courier to hub, high sell), they provided very nice profits.

2nd-best named is hit or miss. Best named can be obscenely high margins though. Check out Arbalest heavy launchers or medium and large scout artillery (I would assume the same would go for rails as well). Named items are a good starting point for new traders. Entry costs usually aren't that high. Volume on both supply and demand sides can be somewhat low and erratic in terms of total isk/day so the bigger players usually don't bother with them resulting less (and less cut-throat) competition.

T2 trading can be harder to get into as it is generally more of a bulk kind of trading. Named item trading is easier to get into, but doesn't have the possibilities of T2 trading.
Arba launchers was a good example of an expensive named item... but be wary if you don't know what your doing, the price will often shift 1-2 million isk in a matter of hours once a week or so when big traders come through. A new trader who doesn't know how to price things can end up losing money if they are not careful.

Hint. Supply verus demand. Irrelevent what the item is.
Mods names / items stats etc ... forget about them. Look at them as units on something. You need to know how many sell in a given time period, profit margin on you selling them yourself.
If you know your comptition, taxes and broker fees for both your manufacture and sales, you can confidently control the market in practially any item. (In trading case, manufacture cost is procurement cost. The principals still apply)
Your 'profit' remember depended on margin, turnover and costs over a given time period.
Don't focus on just the 'sales magin' of T1 versus T2 items. thats a chumps game. Know the entire picture and run the numbers on each item that catches your eye for the region you are in.
