The difference between secure and non-secure is that you can put a password on the secure ones, delaying theives from getting at the contents. However, the best expansion comes from giant secure cans, there is no giant unsecure can.
I generally use the secure ones for small items too, just to annoy anyone who pops me.

Do you mean containers? In which case, see above.
Or do you mean Expanded Cargohold I and the like?

You don't put containers in your cargo hold to expand it.
You carry an unpacked container in your cargo hold and deploy it near belt and assemble it. These containers as already stated can be secure or unsecure.
The only way you expland your cargo hold is to use expanding modules. -----------------------------------------------

An Expanded Cargohold I (and its variants) will increase your ships cargo hold at the expense of speed and hull hp. Generally this is the best way to increase cargo capacity.
A Giant Secure Container take up 3000 m3 of your cargo, but will hold 3900 m3 of compressable goods. Effectively increasing your cargo capacity by 30%. There is no Giant Standard Container.
Both Large Standard Container and Large Secure Container will hold 780 m3 but take 650 m3: giving only a 20% increase in cargo capacty.
Cargo containers have significant mass, and this will affect your ship's ability to manuver. Further certain items such as Passengers cannot be placed inside a container.

do you just set a password and thats it after assembling?
can you jetterson from your cargo hold?

Edited by: Ki Tarra on 25/07/2007 17:10:29 There is no point in setting a password until you are going to anchor it in space. Anchoring can only be done in 0.7 or lower security space. After it is anchored you can set the password.
If you do not anchor the secure can, anyone with enough cargo space can simply scoop it up into their hold and take it back to a station. Repackaging the container will by pass any password on it. They will NOT be flagged for taking a secure can like they would be with a jet can.
Once anchored and secured it will stay there until you remove it or someone destoys it. They cannot be hacked, the only way into the can is to destoy it. Due to CONCORD, this is not normally practical in secure space, thus you will see lots of clutter in the belts of 0.7-0.5 systems.

Disagree slightly....for Giant secure cans, a password _may_ keep it from getting looted. Not all gate camps keep haulers around, and the cans just sit there because no one can scoop them. So you _may_ be able to come back hours/days later and pick them up. And if they do go get a hauler to pick it up, then that's inconvienced them, which is a good thing in my mind.

If you don't anchor the can, they can scoop it. If they can scoop it, they can take it back to a station and repackage it... passworded or not... and spill it's contents into their hangar. No inconvenience to them, really.
If they take stuff from an non-passworded container in space, they get flagged to your corp as a thief for 15 minutes. They can scoop the container and take it all for free, no flagging penalties apply.

Does this mean you can carry a "larger container" than your cargo hold if it is unpacked? For example, I have an Iteron IV...can I take a jetcan that is unpacked on that Iteron out to space and deploy it?
Thanks

I disagree - If they've just shot you, then they're not concerned about the criminal flagging for looting. If you have a password, then they can't just take the good stuff out of the container and put it in their frigates - the inconvenience is forcing them to go get a hauler to scoop it.
If they're off getting a hauler - you might be able to muster some buddies and be waiting when they get back. Or they might not have access to a hauler - in which case you come back after the gate camp has gone and pick up your stuff.

Interesting as it wouldn't allow me to us the container in my badger, i had to jettison it, anchor and assemble. -----------------------------------------------

It should be assembled before you put it in your hauler, you can't assemble it in space.

....
Actually you are wrong. For every Giant Secure Container you can put in your hold you gain an extra 900m/3 of space. For transport ships which can hold 8 or more, that is quite a boost in space (7200m/3 for 8 GSC). The only drawback is that it will only help for hauling small items which can be placed in cans, but that means it works fine for hauling ore for a mining operation. -=^=-
