I am new to this exploration thing, getting my skills up, getting probes... but then I got to the launchers...
I see there are 2 launchers, the Recon and Scan probe launchers...
Can someone tell me the difference (if I am looking for say Gravimetric Sites) between them, I read the descriptions and the attributes... and thus came here for the Eve-ish to Hamfast translation... because I am still not sure.

Probes used in exploration do not fit inside the recon launcher.

Basic rule of thumb is Scan launcher for Exploration, Recon launcher for hunting. Reasons:
1) Scan Launcher has a LONG cycle time, making it take too long to reliably hunt people with. Its base Cycle is 10 minutes; that can be cut to about 280 seconds with ships/skills. This long time doesn't hurt with the Exploration probes (Gravimetric, Ladar, etc) since they last a decent amount of time but DOES interfere with the hunting-oriented probes like Snoops since they are short-duration. If the probe times out/dies before the launcher finishes its "cycle" you will get no results. The Scan Launcher also is not restricted to the "size" in m3 of the probes put in it. NOTE: The most accurate/short ranges probes will still time out if you don't have higher skills and a ship with a Astrometrics bonus, so pay attention to what you have loaded
2) Recon launcher: Base cycle time 2 minutes, can be cut to about 40 seconds with ships/skills. Limited to "small" probes that are 1m3 or less (none of the Exploration probes fit). Its probes are less accurate but its scan time is much faster hence its harder to find something, but you have a chance of surprising them much faster.
You CAN use exploration probes to hunt with, but the amount of time it takes to find the deadspace increases the chance that the target will get away. I find a LOT of deadspace missions while playing around. You can use the Recon probes to find exploration sites, but they are considerably weaker so you will go through a lot more probes doing it before you get a lock. Best bet is to get a good blanket over the area with 3-4 overlapping probes to increase your effective signal strength. <-----------> Factional Warfare:
