So from what ive picked up you get a ship that has a ton of mining lasers or something like that jetisen some container things and then warp back get a large cargo ship, pick them all up, put em in your hanger, and repeat. is this correct?

Fit mining lasers, fly to belt, target roid, mine, don't die from rats, when your cargo hold is full jetison the ore to a can. When the can is full, fly back to the station, grab your hauler, fly back and pick up the ore, return to station, refine ore for mins, and sell. Rinse and repeat as desired.
Watch out for ore theives and empire griefers. __________________________________________________

Edited by: Asarah on 26/07/2007 05:28:48 K the not so short version:
1) Jet cans can hold 27500 m3 of ore, more than all but the best and biggest industrial ship can haul in one load.
2) jet cans have a timer of a little over an hour from the time they're dropped to when they pop. If you don't pick up your ore before the can pops then it dissapears into the void. Untill you really start getting some mining skills and a barge it'll take you close enough to an hour to fill a can as makes no difference so you may as well do a can at a time. Plus the less cans you have in space the less exposed you are to ore theifs
3) Empire griefers are a group of individuals who get their in game enjoyment out of killing unsuspecting industrialists by exploiting the can flagging mechanic. They have a bunch of tricks up their sleeve but it goes something like this: You drop some ore into a can, and then go to get your hauler, while you're gone they warp in and move your ore to a can of their own. You return, unsuspecting and go to grab your ore in your hauler and become flagged because you just stole from their can. They now have every right to shoot you, and will. There are variations on the theme, but they all taste the same.
Ore theives roam around noobish systems looking for miners with near full cans of ore in industrials. Knowing you're in a mining ship and can't fight back they'll grab your hard earned ore from under your nose and skidattle.
EDIT - Oh yeah, rats are NPC 'Pirates' that spawn randomly in asteroid belts in systems with a sec status below .9. The lower the sec status of the system, the harder and more abundant the rats. __________________________________________________

From a nubb to a nuub. When your ship is full, right click the ore in your hold and click Jettison ( JETtison CANister). it now resembles a can in space but, is really only your ore. you can stack more ore into a can than you can into your ship. When you go get a hauler what you are doing is getting a ship with a bigger hold to haul it to station. The "jet can" it's in expodes as it's not really there and you can't move a jet can per se.
"Rats" are NPC (Non-Player-Character) Pirates. who will shoot you and destroy your ship if they can. They will not pod you though.
Hope this helps

Secure cans work but they don't hold nearly as much as a jet can and they can't be anchored within mining range of an asteroid so you spend most of your time running back and forth. __________________________________________________

are you suppost to buy these canisters? i was reading a post about how they come in different sizes. also what is easier in the long run if you plan on crafting stuff out of the things you mine, going prospector or engineer?

Jet cans are free, you need to buy secure cans. You will also need to train the anchoring skill to anchor the cans in space or they will pop just like a jet can. __________________________________________________

Do the tutorial and read the player guides at the top of board.
Most of these questions are answered there.

You are not restricted to anything based on race. All you need to do is train the skills and you can do anything.

On that same line, the only difference between Engineer and Prospector is the starting skills. In the long run all that matters are your stats bcause those determine how fast you can learn stuff. Every character can learn every skill in the game given time. How long that takes is determined by your attributes. All else is just a matter of whether you have the skills to use stuff and to what extent those skills make using that stuff easier or more powerful. And lacking skills is just a matter of learning time.

Anchoring is under the Corporation Management skill tree. Training this skill to level 1 is just fine, you won't need a higher level in anchoring unless you want to anchor a POS. ( I don't think, not completely sure)
Drones are perfect for keeping the belt rats from popping you. I think the Osprey (Caldari Cruser can hold 5 light drones).

I'm a little confused on how secure "secure" containers actually are. I bought one yesterday. Set the password and deployed it for 'self'. I had it almost full when someone in a large hauler just cam up to it and emptied it as fast as if where a jetcan.

The secure cans are extremely secure, but, only if you are in a system that has a 0.7 or below security status. Above that, you cannot actually anchor them, making them pointless. Above 0.7 it is always better to use a Jettison can, because at least if someone comes along and steals the ore, they don't have the option of screwing you out of even more money by stealing the can as well.

With secure cans, make sure to do 2 things:
1. Anchor the can. (anchoring skill) 2. Set a password.
If your can is unanchored, ANYONE with a large enogh hold can freely scoop your can up without getting flagged for aggression. If there's no password set, ANYONE can open up your can and steal. _______________________________
