So I wascruising the general boards and seeing the predictable rants about nerf local!! remove showing up in local unless typing etc.. and I had an idea. this idea may have already been thought of, but Im not cruising a few hundred pages to find out. so here it is: Make local not show a player unless they speak, just like alliance channels and such, now make it so a SYSTEM MESSAGE Appears when the gates fire. ie. SYSTEM:xyz gate activating I see this being used for low/0.0 sec.
in high sec empire we can assume that all ships fly with a type of transponder announcing to traffic controll etc who and what they are. I think this could level the field for hunter/hunted in low/0.0 as the "hunted" would know if they are not afk that "somthing" is in local, and the "Hunter" would not know immeadiatly wether or not thier is prey in a belt or a camp waiting on the next gate for them. yes it does slightly give the advantage to the hunted, but a smart hunter would/could lie in wait in a system for some "prey" to come by. would also allow recons and cov ops to be used properly, as they could enter a system and begin recon work on that system without the locals knowing what they were up to.
anyways, just a thought on how to stop the whiners in the general forum I HAD A DREAM, AND IN THIS DREAM I WAS HARRRRD! |

Just with your first idea is great. Only show up when you speak. You can already scan 14Us with the build in scanner and have an idea if a ship is about. That is more than enough. Makes hunting AND hiding much more interesting.

Edited by: El''Presedante on 27/07/2007 16:56:57 yes, but having a system message every time in say jita would uhm, probly crash the server.
**reading compreshion for the win!, I see he said in 0.0 low sec so probly a grrreat idea.

nerfing local would just make the [problem of empire poplation far worse. and imagine a 100man gang warping ito your system

Nerfing local may help a small number of players do what they enjoy but would hinder a much larger group enjoying their play style.
The time local did go down pretty much no one undocked, though a lot of pirate gangs ended up fighting each other.

I do not like this idea.
Please keep local as it currently is. Never change it!

What about adding a new probe type? It is cloaked(say for an hour) and reports to the owner and/or the gang he's in(to keep the spam down) all of the traffic that passes by it?
ie: Ship detected. Type: Helios. Standing: -80.(terrible) Ship detected. Type: Prophecy. Standing: 0 (neutral)
Nothing more to help keepo the lag down - just a way to keep track of what's actually going in and out(the player's names are easy to see of course, but where they came in and what they are flying is always tough to figure out quickly.
Plus, it's a potential huge isk-sink for 0.0, since every corp would have them up at least half the day for major chokepoints.
Oh - the broadcast of course would only be local range. NO getting info from systems you aren't currently in. Also, if you leave the system or dock/log, the probe would of course pop.

Or what about simply removing the show info from local. This would do two things, It would level the playing field for the hunter and the hunted, by not warning of low sec status and it would bring the community together. Players would have to learn the names of known pirates and pirates would need to know the names of known Bounty hunters.

I'm hung on this issue. Local chat being used as an intelligence tool is something that really irks me, but on the flipside without it I'd never get into half the conversations I do - I'm sure many of you (like me) run into long forgotten friends this way.
If I had to go one way or another, I'd say remove it - but the antisocial aspect does make me think twice...

The way IŠd handle local in Empire is like this:
You simply check or uncheck a checkbox(automatically log into local when entering a system) for your default status. You can also change this manually.
If you are logged into local, you are "hooked in" to a systemwide communication network. That means that CONCORD has a fix on your location, and can warp in to assist you if you get attacked in an instant(essentially the way things are now)
Opt out of local, for whatever reason, and you can be podded in hisec with no repercussions. In lowsec, the gate and station guns wonŠt work.
This does two things: Carebears that want to be safe in hisec will always stay logged into local, preserving the social aspect of the game and keeping them safe.
People who want to move around unseen can now do that easily, but they pay the price in essentially relinquishing CONCORD protection.
That would also make Empire PVP more common
1. See a ship running around 2. Check local 3. He isnŠt there 4. OMFWTFBBQ!!!
In lowsec and 0.0, local will always be quite sparse, as there is no upside to using it. Neutrals will use it to announce their presence to the local alliance probably, but not much more. So what? Unsafe space is supposed to be a paranoid place to be anyway...

Local chat should be mandatory in CONCORD space.
