This has been puzzling me for a while now, having just recently started joining in lv4 missions, whenever a wave spawns in a mission i will get the aggro from them.
Im not talking about a couple of the frigates targetting me, its everything. I fly a Myrm, armour tanked, with drones as my main source of damage. Before you blame them ive tried having drones in and out of my bay and it makes no difference.
My mission gang includes shield tankers in BS's, other BS's armour tanking too but no matter what i'll get that aggro.
If i just sit there and do nothing when a wave spawns, everyone else can pound away as soon as they can (literally within a couple of seconds) but i will STILL get the aggro
There seems to be no logical explanation to this, mission doesnt matter as it happens in them all, everyone else in the mission is such a bigger target than me :\
Help!

Rats target the most overpowered ship in range.
j/k, sounds like bad luck to me - or are you always the first one on the scene? That might be it. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

Im often middle of the bunch to arrive, we have a dedicated tank who goes in first but its becoming pointless now as after the initial aggro on them it all comes after me

The rats often target the second person into the mission after the initial spawn. Why?
Sometimes I think the rats are just targeting the closest person. Other times, I think the game mechanics have been changed to stop people from coming in and drawing aggro with a pure tank setup, then bringing in a pure gank setup. I'm not sure which is the real explanation. ------------

Do you have a sensor booster fitted by chance?
I currently run L4s with two accounts, and never ever get aggro with my second ship to warp in (remote-rep/cap transfer Apoc). What I noticed in the past though, when I ran missions with other people, was that rats seem to really hate sensor boosters, and will aggro on ships running them for some reason. I tested it numerous times just to be sure as it made no sense, but it seemed to be true. This was 6-8 months ago though.

When will rats stop their senseless prejudice against sensor boosters and mining lasers? Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

Rat's hate sensor boosters? Never heard that before. I almost always had one running in the past. That might explain it... ------------

Unfortunately i have no boosting going whatsoever, i have turned off ALL modules before and i will still get the aggro of anything that spawns during the mission :(
Warping in 2nd, or last, doesnt make a difference either. Its quite frustrating being a 2month old char that gets picked on alongside the 1-3+yr old chars having a good giggle in safety

The only thing I would recommend then is to wait outside the mission until the tank has the aggro. Oh also, if you use ECM on rats, they ALWAYS target whoever jammed them after the jam cycle ends. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

I think this is where people are missing the point, when we initially go in to a mission its fine the person who goes in first gets aggro. But anything that spawns AFTER i enter will ALWAYS target me and me only :/

hey hey
Aggro rules 101.
There has been no real confirmed rules of engagement from CCP (apart from some dev blogs) but here are the rules that have kept me alive for some time now :)
1) If you shoot it, it will shoot back. NPCs and their gangs will shoot you back if you perform an act of agression against them. This includes sending drones. The NPC gangs are generally known as groups and you can see those huddled together. You can control your agro by controlling which groups to agress.
2) Proximity Aggro Some missions have had agro specific to range from the NPC's or structures. The NPC's "guard" a specific area and will agress anything that gets within that range. This Includes Drones. A prime example of this is Towers in missions. They have a 50km proximity agro range :)
3) First through the gate. (AUTO) There are various missions with auto agro on entry (JIP) and whoever goes through the gate first will catch the flack. after this Jump In Point (JIP) aggro the mission will calm down and your safe till you agress.
4) Because we hate you Not sure if this one is still an active rule but the person who holds the mission is generally the NPC Primary. The mission holder is the person who spawns the mission when they activate warp
5) Target Switching This was brought in a few patches back and NPC's will now target switch if they find that they cannot kill the primary. This seems to be more relevant with drones.
6) Drone Aggro There are some NPC's that purely hate your drones and on release of them or if they even get a sniff of Valkyrie Meat they will drop everything and eat through your drones like a fat chick in a chocolate factory. Mercenary Overlord BS's kill drones :)
7) something i havent totally confirmed yet. With multi spawn missions (blockade) I Think that the last person to kill the trigger ship takes the aggro. Im normally very carefull with these missions when im ganged and prefer to kill the trigger ship myself. but the because we hate you rule tends to apply in this situation and the mission holder mostly takes the aggro.
8) Tower agression. Shooting the sentries/batteries can often cause the whole pocket to agress you.
General Remember each mission is designed differently and its best to remember what rules apply each time. Sometimes you can take along your looter/salvage alt and he/she would be totally safe.
*sorry for the long post/hyjack but flick through those options and you may find one of them caused you to take the flack each time.

That's prolly it then, they are prolly programmed to pick on the "weakest" ship present. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

Mikal covered it all here. I think the OP is suffering from a case of #7 which is most commonly encountered by gangs. He he throws the last punch on the trigger ship gets the aggro.

When I was running L4s in a phoon, had support in cyclone. The cylone almost always got agro. This was a pain. It was remote repping/sensor boosting.
Also, one solution for the OP. Get your mates to fit remote armour reps. Then you can take all the DPS easily :D

I wish I had your luck. NPCs always, without fail, decide they want to go after my drones if they're out when they warp in.

It could be #7 sometimes but unfortunately not always the case as i can stop firing before the trigger is killed and it'll still happen
Even if i was still firing away the odds are against me getting the final hit with my 50dmg hits compared to some my gang hitting for 1k+ per shot.
I'm just going to work on getting in to an Ishtar i think

This is were a cloaking device comes in handy Just remember to fit a sensor booster and keep +5km away from your buddys.
Then before you shoot the trigger mob, you stop firing / call in drones. Then cloak and have the other(s) kill the trigger.

In the multi-spawn auto-aggro missions, if I'm using my drones to destroy the ships, the newly spawned enemies will go after the drones instead of my own ship. I suppose that's a case of the trigger ship getting destroyed, and the one to lay the final blow being the one to get aggro on the next wave... ---

check one idea - they attack easiest target for them / or youngest / exp/ char in a plex / i cold even jump in as last i was running away with 20 km range in my frigate even if friend's cruisers were shooting to them at point blank range :-) take a noob with you - you will have quiet time

Regarding Drones and the wave based spawns. I have never had a problem of them targeting my drones. In The Blockade I can have sentries out or a bunch of heavies and yet the new spawn always targets me. (Domi).
You get to know which missions do what. There are some missions where you can be flying in amongst groups of NPCs and they will neither agro you or your drones. Other missions you drop your drones and the world goes mad at them.
There seems little logic to it all, so I can only assume each mission has it's own set of rules and the "drone agro bug" isn't so much a bug as a "feature" CCP want to keep quiet.

It might be the case if your *only* using drones for damage. But certainly for me, Blockade targets my ship only. But then I use a rack of rails and a painter so....
That gives me an idea. What if you use Small drones to finish the trigger ship ? The small drones would then be your speed tank and youd be damping free ! Kill off the other NPCs with a Gank ship !

Is a domi considered weaker than a raven? I have been running missions with an alt with me in a domi tanking, and the alt in a raven for extra DPS (the raven alt is fairly new, low SP). It seems no matter what, the new waves aggro me in the domi, every time. -=^=-
