Is it worthwhile for a new player to go into faction warfare? My goal in Eve is to get into PVP, meet new and interesting people, learn to play properly and have fun doing it. I was thinking FW might be a good way to accomplish all of these goals but I have also seen a lot of negativity around FW on the forums and I am not really sure why.
Also, if I do join FW what is the best way to find good players to play with and learn from? Are FW players generally accepting of noobs like me or do I need to go and bum around low security space by myself until I have 10 million skill points?
Thanks in advance. |

Its a bit of a mixed bag. No you do not need to have 10m sp, but expect to get trolled a little in the npc fw corp. While it will be hard it has the potential of being very rewarding.
However, be warned: if you are new there are A LOT of things you don't understand. Entering lowsec without a mentor will result in you dying. A lot. Like, "omg, it feels like everywhere I go I die." Even with the mentor its gonna hurt. However, you will be much mroe battle hardened than people will expect from your age character if you make it through it.
Try hitting up some of the more helpful vets and take a look at the guides in teh Warfare and Tactics section of the forum.
In short. Jumping into pvp at your age means you should get ready to read and look forward to dying (it really IS ok to die a lot, just make it cheap losses) Get into a player corp ASAP. |

If you are looking to join faction warfare in a player corp, Rifterlings is recruiting people of any experience, and willing to train newbies. But, as Karl said, get ready to die a lot. Heck, even after two years of play, I expect to die every time I undock and go looking for a fight. However, the best experience is that gained from actual combat, particularly with older players who can give you pointers and advice. I owe most of my combat skills to joining Ushra'Khan in 0.0 when i had about 3 mil SP, then proceeding to lose tens (if not hundreds) of Rifters, while trying to take away some new piece of knowledge or tactics from every battle. It was great fun.
FW has good money in it, good fights, and some ways to restrict your engagements (so you don't get battlecruisers dropped on your frigates every time). Plus, if you decide to base out of lowsec, you can even go full pirate and shoot non-hostile people as well.
Anyway, if you're looking to step into PvP via FW, look for a corp to join, where you can actually have people show you around. If you are in the US Timezone (particularly late, 0400+ Eve Time), you are welcome to join Rifterlings.
Welcome to Eve, by the way! Fly dangerous! |

Regardless of what nullsec elitists tell you, some of the best pilots and FCs have emerged from FW. The negativity stems from the rivalries and smacktalk b/w both sides more than anything else. When you have to fight each other everyday, it's only natural to see that side emerge. I suspect the Minnie vs Amarr side will heat up big time in 2012 due to corps from Gallente and Caldari coming over because they're either bored, not challenged, or sick and tired of seeing each other on a daily basis. Coupled with the addition of alliances allowed to be in FW soon , FW will be the place to be...assuming the 'alliances in FW' fix is executed well and not horribly.
Cheap T1 thrills, T2 gangs, and hotdrops are common. Just stay out of the local and forum smacktalk and you'll be fine.
I would personally recommend you at least have a healthy wallet before entering FW because you will die...alot. . |

FW is a great way to get faction points through pvp. Unfortunately other then that is mainly bragging rights.
FW is one of the many things about low sec that CCP needs to focus on improving.
FW is a good low ceiling to start, but you could also learn similar things in a young mercenary corp.
I dont think FW is bad. I just think CCP needs to give FW peeps more goodies for there labors in the form of gameplay features. |

If you want to go and learn PvP I would suggest RvB (Red republic or Blue Federation) over FW. RvB are 2 alliances who are contstantly at 'war' with each other so they can PvP. They do this all just so newer people have access to PvP and you can also learn a lot in there too.
I wouldn't go into FW as it means you have go low-sec a lot (not advisable as a new player) and also you will ruin your faction standings (which if you don't want to FW for a long time) might not come in use as you can't acces all faction space. So unless you like the whole idea of FW (mostly filled with role players) then I would say go for it, if you just want to learn some small scale PvP I would find another way (like I suggested RvB is a possibility). this, like fw, is a double edged sword. As a new player, losing your pod is inexpensive and a good lesson to learn early on. Since there is no pod killing allowed in RvB, new players will always be at a strong disadvantage due to older players have ridiculously expensive pods that they know they wont lose.
However, you won't be in low sec and you will get your hand held a lot more (both can be good things). So, as i said before, double edged sword.

This takes a long time to do (over a year). The main thing you want to watch out for (which you run the same risk with faction missions which you get outside fw) is that your standing don't go below -5 with a particular faction.

Not true but a usual stigma (much more prevalent on the amarr/matar side)

Not even that. The Minmatar and Amarr militias sometimes enjoy the banter of "die, slaver scum!" or "Amarr victor!" or other such stuff, but that really is not RP by a long shot. Sure, the Amarr/Minmatar side has more RP entities (Teraa Matar, PIE, etc) but there are plenty (and a majority, I feel) of non-RP corps in here. |
