With the advent of being able to export your orders from your wallet an idea came to me. Create a site where traders can post their orders.
This would be a new twist on the old market tool in the sense that it would be updated by the people benefiting from the orders, instead of those just trying to make a quick buck. This would encourage the traders to keep their orders up to date on the site. To avoid stale market data orders would expire after 3 hours or so.
I do see some downsides. Like putting your name out their on your orders. As it is now the market is semi-anonymous in the sense that you don't know who you are trading with until you made the deal.
Question is are the benefits of intergalactic advertising worth it?
I'm interested to hear what people think and if they would use the service.

Why would you not just post the Item Name, Price, Time it was sold, and Station it was sold at. You could easily throw out anything else, besides you could also have it update the information ( via a program ) through the API system. You would only need to collect recent data ( last 12-24 hours ) for any particular system.
If this service did the above I would use it, even if it meant having to download my wallet data, as long as it only send the information it required to generate regional data on the item.
Clearly it should also upload the csv market data, if they existed, but again you could only send required information.

Edited by: Dr Slurm on 04/08/2007 16:01:55 The thought came to me last night for an easy way to give anonymity to traders. I could easily write a simple java program to scrub the logs of personal data before it's sent.
It would be an option, personally I'd rather have my name out there.

It doesn't matter to me to be honest :-)
The more data you have, the bigger the file, and longer it will take to upload and extra and be visable to other users is my thought.

Well I am a programmer I can make the website show or not show whatever I want. The file size we are talking about is 3-5kb. This would take approximately 1 second to send via a 28.8k modem, probably less.

Have you thought about using some of the existing market analyzing programs along with your idea? WalletMaster is a very nice program that could possibly be used as a way to parse lots of data and then it could send the data to you. Combining of programs and websites like that would give them more users, instead of just creating yet another website to analyze market data/orders. I understand your idea is different than the ones currently out there, but it's already beginning to become an overload of programs. It would be nice if some of these programs would become group efforts... or at least collaborate with each other to some degree.

I'm always interested in data mining.
There does seem to be a bit of bloat in wallet programs as of the release of the API, but that is really to be expected. I'm guessing not all authors will continue to update their programs.
With a site like I mention you could create virtual store fronts also instead of the free for all market that we currently use. I don't know if there would be any real advantage though.

I would only see virtual storefronts being useful for very large, expensive items. But really, we have contracts and these forums already. All that really needs to happen is the contracts system needs to be refined a bit. Auctions need to have a "Min Bid Increment" user definable field.
Using out of game systems for in-game purchases/sales just doesn't work to well for the majority of purchases. It's mainly just useful for specialty purchases. Honestly, anything that works better out of game is a fault of CCP. The fact that the forums still are used so heavily for buy/sell auctions/sales is a clear sign contracts need a lot more work.
That's why I was thinking all that data being collected would be much more interesting/useful if it was all collected in one spot and used to compile statistics. We could start to see how much money is traded every single day just among the users of the site... and that may give us some clue how much money is traded throughout the entire game. We could also see what types of modules make up the majority of sales, etc.
