To start with, set the range to maximum (just type in 999999999999999999, and it will automatically go to the max range) and make sure the box that says "use overview settings" is ticked, then make sure that you've got an overview preset called "scanning". Mine includes planets, stargates, asteroid belts, stations, probes, forcefields and control towers, as well as all ship types & combat drones.
Then, make sure that you've got 360 degrees selected on the slider bar, and then hit scan. The results of this will show you everything within the selected overview groups within ~14 AU. If you find a potential target within these, slide the bar down to 180 degrees and aim your camera towards the front of your ship, scan again, if the target is still in your scan , narrow it down to 90 degrees (if not, turn around so your camera is facing the back of your ship and scan again), starting to concentrate on any celestial objects within your scan angle, narrow it down further until you've just got 1 celestial object within your scan, it's likely that your target is at that object. If it's applicable (i.e not a station/gate/POS) warp in and start the pewpew.
If they're not obviously at a celestial object, they're likely to be in a mission/safe, and it's unlikely you'll find them with the shipboard scanner (bring the scan range down to 5AU anyway and if they're still on the scan use the onboard scanner to see if there's any encounters around they could be at) so you'll need yourself a prober. ----------------------------------------------

Because it's your actual physical view ingame, point it so that you're actually looking down the length of your ship. ----------------------------------------------

By looking at your screen. Ask someone to take it over with you on teamspeak best way to learn. He can also go different places and see how long it takes you to find him/her. |

I don't go through all that tbh. I make a safespot about 100,000K away from Planet One and sit in it. If nothing is in range, I warp to the closest planet further than 14AU and repeat.
If I see something at max range/360 degree scan, I squeeze it down to 5 degrees and point directly at all planets/stations/gates/belts/moons within range. If you press the ALT button, a small box appears on your ship. Pointing that box directly at something means you are looking within 5 degrees of it.
I sort my overview by range and just click each thing I scan to keep track. If I still don't find it, then it's in a safespot and there's no point looking any further unless a prober is nearby. If it's at a moon, I'll look for control towers before warping to it.
Very quick and efficient.

Scan probes can't be selected as a filter can they? I've looked and looked but never found it listed anywhere in the filters.

Also, if you bring up your solar system overview box, you can see which way the camera is pointing on the solar system view (shows up as a transparent green cone)

If you want to see things on the 5 degree scan easily zoom out and left click your ship. The little box icon around your ship is more or less the 5 degrees, so pan your view around until the box is over the belt/planet/station etc you want to scan and as long as its within the 14 au's range you can accurately see where things are.
