Edited by: The Pointless on 08/08/2007 20:04:45 Long story. A few months ago, NME in the UK gave away a free vinyl single - "Rag and Bone" by the White Stripes - and by design, there was a space in the sleeve open for the vinyl release of the single "Icky Thump". I wanted to complete this, but I kept putting it off until last week, when I ordered it from Amazon. It's arrived today.
Just one problem.
I'd only gone and ordered the album (Also called "Icky Thump") by mistake!
Yep. Dumb, ain't it?
So, I've got the record sitting next to me doing naff all (since I don't have a turntable... yet), but right now I'm tempted to keep it, buy a turntable and start buying these things, and I'm just wondering if anyone else buys vinyl records and has any advice, considering I kinda grew up with the CD.

Erm, chill pill. It was a White Stripes album, not Daz Samsom's Eurovision single.
Oh, and... read the damn rules on sigs, because... damn. That's a big sig.

Okay, I'm being too harsh. But the White Stripes are pants to be honest. Hundreds of bands deserve more recognition than that talentless twosome. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

I wouldn't worry about the alt flamer too much, most of his posts so far have been pretty meaningless dribble.
As far as teh turntable goes, I've got one from the 70's and I don't even know if it works anymore to be honest. If you do buy one the biggest thing you need to check is the needle.

I can count my posts on one hand. Recently, A friend of mine moved into a new house, and he hadn't checked the attic yet, which was locked, so we broke the lock with bolt cutters, went up, and found about 20 old records with a record player, and sat listening to Yoko Onos solo album feeling really creeped out.
So yes, it could be worse, you could have bought Yoko Onos solo album. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Get a 'Pro-ject' deck to start with, they cover a wide range of prices and look gorgeous and sound that way too. If you want something silly cheap check out 'Dual' which are good for the price (the lowend C or CS series).
Theres a damn good chance that your amp doesnt have a phono stage, so you wont just be able to plug it straight in. So you'll need a phono preamp, there are a lot of choices available going from around 15 quid (UKP) to several thousand quids (UKP, no, I'm not jesting).
Some people may say, no, get vestax, or technics. Well I have those as well, they're for DJing and are too expensive if you just want to play some tunes. You don't need direct drive and something built like a brick ****house so don't get one. Also, to my ears they don't sound as good as a cheapo Dual deck anyhow (yeah, yeah, unless you spend even more cash on arm, cart, stylus, blah. The Technics signal path is still full of sad low cost kak for example). If you absolutely must get a Technics, make sure if you're buying a 1200 to get an old one, recentish versions are very badly assembled. 1210's have always been sweet however.

Buy the CD version. Ignore the audiophiles who tell you they can hear the difference between a $5 Radio Shack cable and a $1000 cryogenically-frozen one. There are few useful ways that vinyl is superior to CDs.

One of these might help. But I think you'd want Amazon UK.

Yup, changed the ".com" to ".co.uk" to get there. Erm... no fair. The US gets a price cut on that?

I think they're good. Not good musicians particularly (Meg is pretty mediocre on the drums, and Jack isn't a great guitarist or pianist in anyone's books), but the overall effect of their songs is very decent. Which is more than you can say about a lot of bands... --------

Well, there is a big difference. SO THERE ;P. Honestly, you could dump ridiculous amounts of money and get only 2% aural benefit from it, but don't buy garbage. Otherwise it sounds like garbage.
Oh, and vinyl kicks regular cds into the room, though HD (24/96) cds sound pretty darn nice, too.
Radio Shack? Gahhhhhhhhhhh. Better off having a string tied between 2 dixie cups. __________________________________________________ FOLD. The Ultimate PVP. It really is Us vs. Them. clicky |
