I am brand new and have been using the autopilot from what people in newb channel have been telling me but I hear manually flying is better and faster. Can someone give me an example of how to manually fly to a destination? Thanks...

Easiest way to do it is right click anywhere in space, you'll get a list of planets, asteroid belts, stargates and stations. Select which one you want and click "warp to zero", that's manual flight. It's a lot faster because autopilot warps you to 15km from the object, this will warp you to zero km

Edited by: Afrika 18 on 09/08/2007 13:50:59 if you mean 'manually fly' like you would in say...Battlefield or an fps, you don't really do that in this game. Theoretically you could my double-clicking a spot in space...your ship will change direction to go that way, and then double-click another spot and your ship will change to go that way...and so on and so on...
Distances are so vast that 'joystick-like' travel is impractical. It would be neat though if they had a first person view a'la' Tie Fighter or Wing Commander for combat situations.
When I got my Merlin, I thought it looked so cool that I'd double click the space around stations with my AB's on and manuever around.
Movement in this game is like 'Star Trek' where you set coordinates and then hit warp, as opposed to 'Star Wars' where a lot of the flying is like in an fps game.

when you use autopilot your ship warps to around 15 km. from Stargate then crosses those 15 kms. on normal ship speed to reach in distance of warp ( which is around 1.5k) while if you do it manually you can warp to 0 and directly jump in Stargate and this saves much time and also doesn't give much chance to people sitting at gates scanning your stuff. Autopilot:
Set a destination, click the 'A', go AFK while your ship flys to your destination. Takes longer because the ship has to fly 15km to every gate. Is more dangerous as that 15km flight is enough time to lose your ship in lowsec, or if you are carrying enough valuables, you can get suicided in highsec.
Manual:
Set your destination the same way as before. When in space, either look on the left side of your screen where it tells you the next system in route and warp to 0 on that gate, or (the easier way) add stargates to your overview, the next gate in line will be highlited yellow. Click that gate then click the warp-to-0 button at the top of the overview. Once you are on the gate, click jump. Repeat the above process until you are at your destination. MUCH faster and safer than AP. -=^=-

Why isnt there a FPS type combat system? Itd be nice to use cover to avoid attacks. And faster movement makes it harder for others to track you.

There isn't one because there doesn't need to be. Rather than twitch reactions, the skill is based on tactical and calm thinking.
