I have only been playing for maybe a week, and I have used Reaper (starter ship), Slasher, Breacher, Rifter and Thrasher. So far I enjoy playing the small quick little fighters much more then the slow lumbering destroyer. maybe I will have more fun when I actually progress more with the larger ships and get more destructive guns, but so far I really think I would rather play a tiny little fighter over any capital ship that will be available to me.
So here is my question. Is there any use for small fighters in large corporations and in outer space conflicts against other players? I would love to pilot a tiny little fighter that can out manuever all the larger ships and avoid fire from ships due to speed and agility. Does anyone have any advice as to what ship and custumizations I should shoot for in order to have a fighter that will be of any use for large scale conflicts?

The slow lumbering destroyer?
Ok, I lol'led.
Frigates (small nimble ships you're talking about) are used a lot in PVP in the outlands. They are primary tacklers, and anti-Frigate ships as well (yes, meaning frigates take out other frigates who web or jam bigger ships).
As an aside, you won't be able to out maneuver a smart bomb, or a larger ship with anti-frig weaponry of some sort. FYI.

Edited by: 3nkil on 15/08/2007 01:20:38 there will always be a role for light ships (you tackle so your friends in battle ships can wtfbbq them)
also if you stick to smaller ships you can one day use an interdictor.
as far as small group / solo pvp- you will want to stick to cruiser and lower...
so i'd say level up your gun support skills, navigation, cap skills, hull, armor, shield skills. that should take you long enough to where you have a better idea of what eve is about- and all of these skills are usefull for minmatar

Yes, there is definitely a use for small fast ships. Both as tacklers (ships that get fairly close and "catches" enemy ships using warp jammers and stasis webifiers so that larger ships can deliver their firepower) and fast roaming gangs.
Go for the fastest and most agile class of ships in the game... interceptors. Possibly one of the best class of ships in the game. Not a ton of firepower (after all, they're still just an advanced form of frigate) but in numbers and fitted with some form of electronic warfare (Tracking disruptors, ECM or Remote Sensor Dampers) they're deadly. The main advantage of an interceptor gang is that they usually have the initiative. It's extremely difficult to engage an interceptor gang that doesn't want to fight, and it's hard to avoid one that does. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. The ship type you'll be wanting to look out for is the interceptor - with the right modules and high skills an inty can reach incredible speeds and are most often used as 'tacklers' - pinning larger ships down with warp core disruptors / scramblers.
Assualt Frigates are less popular (and slower) but have slightly more 'armor' on them - still useful in a 'heavy tackler role' though.
If you think destroyers are slow, wait until you jump into a cruiser (still considered by most as a fast ship) or Battle Cruiser.
As you seem to be a minmatar pilot have a look at the stabber, vagabond, wolf and the claw: all very fast ships when fitted correctly.

Just a note though, the problem with interceptors is that they aren't the way towards making isk (you cant run missions or rat in them), so you will need to use some other ship for money-making. Other than that, they often get the lion's share of the fun in pvp. ----

Thank you very much for you input. Interceptor sounds like the right ship for me, and maybe an interdictor but sense that has the same hull as Thrasher I may not enjoy it quite as much.

You seem to dislike destroyers because they are 'slow and lumbering.'
However, unlike destroyers, interdictors were designed to be fast. They are the next logical step after interceptors, after all. Interdictors are not as fast or agile as an interceptor, but you'll find the speed of the Sabre to be more than... adequate.

just remember to keep going with your skills once you get into the inty. You may technically meet the requirements to fly one, but the modules will potentially maul your capacitor unless you do some training.

And a correctly fitted destroyer can be pretty damn fast.

I've trained all the way to a BS and then back to Assault Ship. I've had more fun flying the little Assault ship then any BSs. Both AS and Interceptor pilots are highly welcomed to any combat orientated corp.

learn to fly a ceptor and join a corp that flies in ceptor gangs, multiple ceptors can easily chew up battleships and then dash away before reinforcements arrive.
