Think about it, most of the ships you see are navy ships created by the different empires for their fleets.
I feel that EVE would appear more 'alive' if we could see a greater variation of ships, maybe create non combat ships designed for exploration or similar? Maybe a science ship that gives bonus to salvage or whatever?
Brainstorm away!

Civilian Ships are cool, great and dandy. Just as long as you can kill it as you can kill "military" ships.

civilian ships would be frackin awesome while it surely would be nice to have a specialized exploration ship i¦d also love to see "useless" ships too, speak ships with no real role except looking good and pimp. maybe some of em are raceing ships but that would already go too far imo. imagine for some fast traveling you wouldnt have to stick to shuttles you could choose between different frig sized ships which do the job exactly the same but look like teh sex. basically ferrari, hummer, dodge viper in space.

I would love to see a passenger ship. Who wants to be stuffed in a hauler? A nice cozy passenger ship for transporting the nobles and middle class to their new homes or families on other planets. Random stuff like that. I would love to see pointless and easy to kill Civilian ships! ________________________________________________

Civilian ships would be great. In fact any new ships would be great. Apart from the carebear capital.
It seems like an age since there has been any new ships. I suppose the tier 3 BSs and tier 2 BCs were the last ones.

Let each station "produce" civilian passangers and give us civilian transport ships. Make the empire runs give a small profit while transportation that ends in a low sec system gives more profit... or something.
Maybe even luxury cruises...
Killing/ganking one would make you drop hard in security status since its a genocide. And wouldnt give anything worth except salvage and a few surviving passengers perhaps.
Bla bla bla. Im bored.

I think that putting non combat ship models in the game would be easy, but it would require new code to make them do something clever. Current npc's cant even warp away.

You really won't need much time to implement something like this. The two most time-consuming elements to new ships in EVE are:
1. Designing and creating the new 3D models 2. Going to the pub and getting drunk, then conceptualizing how the new ships will destroy the current game mechanics in the shortest amount of time
#1 is easy enough for starters, can simply use existing models.
#2 is either a) a non-issue in this case or b) already handled by this thread, whether it knows it or not. :p

Just implement them like missions. "Bring all these dudes to this star base here and I'll give you a 100 isk!" Could be prisoners, VIPs, slaves (Amarr), refugees, civilians, space kittens and exotic dancers. "The Pleasure Palace has run out of dancers, help us restock!"

Pod transporters would make sence with the rapid deployment stuff.
Put the ships in carrier, the pilots in the pod transporter (wich allso could use cyno jumping) then jump both into system, and pilots can get in there ships. let the battle begin. or mining op if you stuff barges in ship hold :D Your signature is too large. We already HAVE "Civillian ships".
They're called shuttles...
Other than that, the famous Opux Luxury Yacht is out there. It's very rare, true, but it IS in the game. As for dedicated exploration/salvage/whatever ships, they would probably still be empire-created, as I assume the empires would see a need for them and simply design them (example could be a T2 variation of an existing ship, although a totally new model would rock!).

Hey, if you switch the order of these two around, you come up with gallente ships. How can we destroy the current game mechanics... "lets give the gallente ships so much dps that nobody will pick another race for pvp ever". Then design sexy ship models that are some of the nicest looking ones in the game for it.
Ok, MOSTLY joking... ---

They're all there. I'd love to see a dedicated "science" ship with Exploration bonuses, though. That'd be genius. --------

Our models look cool is because you'll actually get to the see them, since we have to snuggle up to our targets to get that DPS in the first place. :)

Science Vessels and Junkers are badly needed, yes. I would suggest tech 1 for both.
Science Vessels should be cruiser sized, and have : 10% reduction in scan probe time, 5% to hacking (minmatar/caldari) or 5% to archaeology (amarr/gallente) per level. Role Bonus: 50% bonus to probe duration,
This gives them the same probe speed as a covert ops, and, crucially, the ability to hang probes in space much longer. This is perfect for exploration, but no use for recon probing because 1) you cant warp cloaked and 2) recon probe duration doesnt matter too much except with snoops, and if yo're on snoops you should be about to bust the target anyway. The bonus to arch/hack is pretty self explanatory, although I wish there was four miniprofessions so they could be distributed easily among the races.
What I'd really like is if it also had some assembly lines, for research, but I know thats not feasible or even useful - presumalby it would have to "seige" to do so (as the rorqual) as I imagine there's a technical problem with stuff flying around with jobs installed in it, and of course, research jobs take ages. Its stupid, but I really like the idea of a science ship... doing science. On board labs! Bah.
Junkers: rather than racial, would suggest perhaps a one-off faction lad (not ORE though, maybe Ammatar). Nice and simple, bc-sized. 5% to shield resists, 10% to salvager success. Role bonus: 100% to salvager and tractor beam range. 8 hi, 5mid, 3 low. Random idea - can tractor hostile wrecks? Makes it more of a PVP use, although I imagine there are grief possibilities in high-sec. Should look like a pile of junk.

Why couldn't civilian ships be essentially anchored like a can, and capable of performing certain tasks - A science ship could essentially be a small, fixed lab in space. Essentially more like platforms - than ships. Whilst it shouldn't be as good as using a POS it would present new options for characters.
Maybe an archeolgical ship could be capable of scanning an entire Region for Complexes, in say an hour or so.
With the advent of walking on stations a Pleasure ship could be a place to dock, outside of stations, or organise partys or just to serve as a 'little house in the asteroid field'.

Few thoughts here...
I just read an article about how Eve hired an economist to examine the market here, and such...there are a few things that any market demands that aren't present here.
1. Luxury vehicles. Everything in Eve revolves around vehicles. Lets compare it to the auto-market then. Every ship in Eve is judged on its utility. From frigates to battleships, dreads, carriers...every ship is judged on its combat potential, and is subsequently whined about as it is compared to other ships and found lacking, or overpowered. There should definitely be a niche market for luxury ships. The Silver Magnate for example - SOMEONE made it. Its a luxury ship. Where's the Lamborghini of Eve? Porsche? Ferrari? Expensive, fast, sleek and good looking....designed to be sporty and fun to zip around in, and take screenshots of. To stop into stations, turn the bass up and pick up digital women?
2. Actually, now that I think about it, that's about the only thing I can think of.

Indeed. Even it they would be useless for other than showing off there would be a market for them as people like to buy nice and shiny things. If they were made fast, people could use them as shuttles or whatever and then they would be in demand. I think shuttles in general nede some love, theres only the 4 existing types and it would be cool to see more.
When faction warfare comes maybe they could implement 'private shuttles' wich only those with a certian faction standing can fly.......or those that has fought well for their faction and receive the 'private shuttle' as a token of great bravery or whatever.
Anyhow, just lighted a fat one so I dont hope my writings have too much syntax errors in them.

first thing i thought was ... "opux yacht"...and maybe the two magnates.. but yeah, its a bit strange we only have 4 shuttles and some indies...
but basically its a bit like walking in stations, right?
were all hard pirate type men, and like true manly men, with out vast knowledge about mechanics, programming and well... basically everythign there is... we all agree that we need "this friggin game fixed before walking in stations"
you know what i mean?

Edited by: Kimiko Kurosawa on 17/08/2007 15:16:50 I think it would be great to see NPC civilian ships trundling around stations, following 'trade routes', noodling around in asteroid belts, cruise liner type ships slowly ferrying sightseers around, etc, etc.... They wouldn't actually affect Eve in terms of game mechanics, but would make the Eve universe feel more alive and lived in.

Conspicuous consumption right now is module fittings you don't need but spend billions on because you can, and ships that are simply impractical to fly. Townpose ships don't exist because once a functionally useless but important object exists, others will inherently strive to take them away from you. With no venue for having others view your object of envy without it getting blown the hell up, status symbol ships are pointless. "I've got a Bhaalgorn in my hangar!!" isn't cool in the slightest if I can't see it, go "Ooooooh", and touch it(without stealing or destroying it).
Long story short... I guess I eat my words about station ambulation. It does have value: showing off your blinged out pimpmobile. I'd like something in Amarr Gold Chrome...

Did you mean non-military type ships that we can pilot or npc civ-ships, just wonderin. But I think both would be awesome. I don't remember the Millenium Falcon being an ex naval ship, it was civilian Corelian freighter.
Would be good to be able to modify them, like Han did. Give them hidden weapons and super warpdrives.
You would never get a small time business man flying a Star Destroyer would you?
On the npc front, it would also be cool to have civilian ships to interact with/attack. I don't think pirates only attack other Cruisers+ etc, seem to remember them being pretty indescriminate. It would also create more sceenary in the world, have them following traffic routes, and setting up homes and things, stuff that normal citizens do, and maybe they would stray into low sec or 0.0 and be cannon fodder.
The world needs more richness.
