I'm problems with the in game music not playing or rather not heard at all. I hear a persistent reverberating hum, hum. Most of the game interface sounds can be heard just fine like the autopilot voice.. etc.. When warp occurs I hear the warp sound develop then the sound goes in and out. A player suggested I try the ALT+SHIFT+CTRL+F12 suggestion. I did that and the game froze up. I restarted the game and could hear sound just fine for awhile but then the same thing happens again.
Do you have any suggestions? I have read three topics so far relating to this issues but no real fix suggestions other than turning down the hardward acceleration on the DX diag.exe menu tab.
Creative SoundBlaster Live 5.1 Platinum card. DirectX 9.0B (installed last night). Windows 98SE
Thanks!

Just check and see if your SB card is installed in the first PCI slot (next to the AGP slot) if so, swap it to another slot and test it.

I got the latest driver.. checked the creative web site.. last posted driver update for the 5.1 card was May 2000.
If I move the sound card to another PCI slot I hope I don't have to go through the process of the windows 98SE hardware detection scenario and reload all the sound files again. hmm..
I can play Earth&Beyond just fine (FYI). I'll have to give the PCI card slot swap a try.

*********Sound Problem Fixed*************
In the Win98SE control panel, go to multimedia, audio tab, advanced properties, Performance TAB û Hardware Acceleration: Change or move slider to Standard Acceleration (not the Direct Sound acceleration).
On the EVE splash screen just after pressing ôyesö to the user agreement, I get an error message on the screen; ôAudio Systemö - Audio Hardware acceleration not detected The sound system will use only software channels until you get at least 12 hardware channels to work on your computer. Please make sure you have correct audio drivers installed.
I can hear all sounds and music perfectly. My next question; WHY do I have to go into the control panel/Audio tab/Performance tab and decrease or turn down audio acceleration? This is the only game that requires me to make this adjustment.
So if anyone has sound problems using Win98SE, and a Creative Labs Soundblaster Live 5.1 Platinum try this suggestion.

Here I am again reviving an old, dead thread. I have the exact same OS/sound card and still have the exact same problem. The workaround works, but it's annoying to have to do it every time I play. Has anyone found a concrete solution to this? Perhaps is it something that can be fixed by the devs? Are tehre any other OS/Soundcard configurations that are having this problem? ---------------

I've recently been having the same exact problem.
The only workarround for me has been to:
login to char screen, switch to windowed mode, quit using CTRL+Q, and login to game. if audio isn't fixed, quit using CTRL+Q and login again til the audio is fixed.

I don't believe this problem affects only Creative cards, because I'm seeing an almost identical effect on my machine, which uses an nForce2 MCP-T intergrated sound chip. Normally it's not a problem, and up until very recently the sound was working fine. It was only after downloading and installing the latest drivers from nVidia that it all went USC again. Apart from the music cut outs, I will also hear occasional sudden drops in the volume of game sound effects and or music, as if multiple sound channels are being used but one has suddenly dropped.
However, I have found a temporary workaround that seems to fix it in the game for a little while. Pause the music, and then hit Escape. wait for a few seconds for the background effects to cease, and then return to the game. un pause the music and you should have it back again. Hope it works for you

Check your speaker setting's under start>creative>[soundcard]>speaker settings
Some times EVE can "check" your digi output only, uncheck it and presto. ----------------------------------------------- "I am watching you through a camera" - Artie Ziff

I can solve that one. Install Win2k. Problem solved. WinME=worst garbage ever invented by M$
