Ok, after reading about the Crielere event and how there were alot of looters in frigates stealing all the cans I had an idea:
Let only those who fired on the ship be able to open the can for the first 15-20 min of the can's life. (and put a slight color marker on cans that you can open to make them eaiser to find).
This would only be for NPC drop cans and only for the first X min of their life. If you aren't going to go you're loot by the time the timer expires you deserve to lose it.

How exactly does the cargo container "know" who fired on a ship?
If someone is trying to "steal" your loot, then shoot them.

Well, the game does know who fired on which ship (it allocates bounties and sec rating correctly). Also, you get eve-mails with this detail if you lost a ship.
Shooting thievs in empire space just doens't work due to the sec rating hit. _________________________________________________

You been reading the thoughts of Vizzini?
"He's trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen! It's not fair!" LOL
Wreckage in cans doesn't belong to you until AFTER you pick it up. So how can anyone else picking it up be a thief?

If me and my buddies spend 30+ min taking out a multi-bship spawn we deserve the cargo. It shouldn't go to the punk in a Frigate+MWD who was chilling out of range while we did all the hard work.
Items in cans that have droped from the ships I've destroyed sure does belong to me.

No they don't. They BELONG to the guy you just murdered, inasmuch as they can be said to belong to anybody.
Besides, you just gave the solution to your own problem. Have a team mate sitting nearby in a frigate with a MWD.

Well, that NPC is now dead so I'm sure they don't mind me taking their stuff.
Have a friend in a frigate w/MWD just so we can get the loot? I don't think that's a good solution.
I was also only thinking this would apply to just loot can's droped from NPC's. It introduce some greifing/confusion if this also applied to can's from PC ships.

I'm all for free enterprize.. but I think the market leaders should have a chance to use their position before the scavengers show up.
(i.e.: give me a few min to get the loot at least)
Normally people who are blowing up the NPC's are targeted by them. The scavengers don't have to worry about this because they'll sit pretty and out of range till other people do the hard work. _________________________________________________
