Edited by: Mr Friendly on 22/08/2007 09:02:34 Well, a typically opaque and 'bolt-from-the-blue' post from CCP. Not sure what to think, tbh.
To the Mods: great job. I especially like the personal touches like signing sigs, hijacking threads (when it was appropriate) and mercilessly crushing threads that got out of hand. Good job.
edit: don't apply to SHC, you'd go bug-eyed without the profanity filter ;P

This truly has been quite a ride in the past several months, although I haven't been around to see some of the more insane forum malfunctions. I have seen enough to know that what we have become a part of, is more than a group of people performing a duty. We have found ourselves in more than a couple difficult situations but have always managed to come through with some amount of grace and dignity (at least as much as we went into it with.)
Originally by: Takahashi Arran Its disheartening how even in being fired the moderators are allowed to post nothing but thanks for the great times rather then having opinions themselves about whether this is a good idea or not. (well atleast on these forums. several have made their views very clear elsewhere)
I really feel bad about this, we do have opinions about this change, and it's not that we're excluding our thoughts about the changes happening but that we're posting what we feel is right at the moment. I personally have not met a more insanely wonderful group of people, the likes of which have posted a *snip* or a *click* on the forums here. We did this "job" not because of a desire to talk to Dev's or GM's, we did it out of a desire to help a great community of people, and improve a game that we enjoy.
Over the past 6 months or so, I have seen IA interventions, threadnoughts, and days where more than a couple mods forgot to take 2 of the yellow pills and 1 of the blue. Even a few moments where I was nearly ripping my hair out in frustration, but even with the hardships I wouldn't trade this experience for the world. We started out as players, then became volunteers, followed by forum moderators/event participants, then somehow evolved into a brotherhood. To my brothers (and sisters) who have given your time and effort to making this game what it is today... I salute you.
/me silently stands at attention saluting through the rain and toward the dawning sun.
Please refrain from sniffling on the forums, it disturbs the other posters. -Darth Patches
Don't let yourselves forget about us, we won't ever forget about you.

It's a damned shame to see such a wonderful group of people being 'kicked' out all of a sudden. What you have done has been invaluable to the Eve community, you worked so hard even though you were all volunteers...
It is indeed a sad day in Eve...

What you fail to note is that the volunteer program is not without issues which is why some customers are happy to see that CCP is growing up. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. |

This is sad, atleast I can't see why I should be happy about it yet. I guess it all has something to do with the massive whining about ISD/Aurora of usually uninformed people spitting it out, ofcourse a few things went terribly wrong back then, but still, most people there really didn't know what they were talking about. It seems to me CCP wants to look more proffesional, which I can understand, some posts posted by moderators here on these forums made me frown a bit. But at the same time, I like it, it's a lot more 'down to earth' and human than moderators/community-managers of other MMO's that often look like robots.
And Aurora. I was playing this game for just a couple of weeks until I suddenly got involved in the whole Brother Joshua/Speakers of Truth storyline. It was breathtaking for someone like me that just came from the static world of warcraft and didn't even know this stuff happened in Eve. It was one of those things that made me decide that I'll be playing this game for the next couple of years. Unlike in most other MMO's, GM-lead ingame events work very well in an unsharded world as Eve. While you can never 'act' all the npc factions realisticly, it adds a lot to the world. You don't directly have to be involved. What I love in Eve is that the storyline actually progresses and that when you read one of the newsarticles, you actually - know - it isn't some made-up story and that it actually really happened ingame. And at the same time you know that quite a lot might be happening in the background, some things you'll never know everything about. I know we with PIE tried to keep the Brother Joshua escorts secret and were told to not talk about it with others (until a certain member couldn't keep her mouth shut when a ISD reporter came in our public channel with questions about it haha! And that news-article resulted in Star Fraction paying some more attention to it).
But this stuff is what lets you immerse in the world and make Eve appear to be dynamic world (and except for most of 0.0 it isn't that dynamic). I know a lot of the people outside the RP corporations still love being part of an immersive world and Aurora added to that. I'm sure a lot of people love reading those news-articles even when they aren't involved. I'd love to see more of the news and I think it'd be a good thing if CCP could manage to publish 3 articles a week on avarage or something like that.
I also think that volunteers in a game like Eve work very well and I really don't believe that paid employees are that much better. You do need to monitor these volunteers heavily and not give them too much tools, ofcourse. But passionate people helping to improve the game we all love for free, what's against that? Ah well, I hope the replacements will be good.

Well, from my perspective, the events during the last 24 hours was two large shocks. One was the apparent knee jerk reaction of just closing the Sale Order channel with no explanation why. Then while players were rabbling on about that and feeling sad and angry, the ISD starts saying goodbye, again with hardly any explanation why.
Ive never been on the side of the people who think ccp dont communicate, but I really hope the last 24 hours is not a sign of what is to come. Im basically an official fan boi of the game and the way its being run, but I will always speak my mind on the things I think is badly handled. But is anyone listening anymore?

I have worked very closely with AURORA since I started here and before that I used to be in AURORA so I am very sad at this news. Both teams have done an amazing job, giving up their spare time to support, improve and immerse people in EVE Online.
Its a tough job doing events, its hard work, EVE fiction is so deep that it requires extensive knowledge to work within it to any realistic degree. But when players are immersed in a story and run with it, then its very rewarding.
But this is not the end people, we have a dream!

Having started off as a bughunter about 3 and a half years ago, I have seen many changes to ISD both as a bughunter, and in working with various ISD teams as a member of QA. TIt saddens me to see people I have come to know in that time have to go through this transition.
That said, in the last 2 years since I have joined CCP, I have watched the company grow from 45 people to around 230, and the peak players change from around 15,000 to well over 34,000. Through it all, the volunteer teams have changed little. I consider it inevitable that a reorganisation should occur.
To all you fine people in ISD, past present and future, you have my gratitude and respect for the time you have given to EVE.

How do you start a post like this?
It's been a true privilage to be a member of the AURORA team. I've learned a huge ammount about RP and how to do it well, both from my friends in the team and from experience with you the players.
I want to thank all of the players who've interacted with us in the events that we run for you. No matter what the outcome of the event it was the interaction with you that made it work.
I want to thank all of the people in AURORA for their support and encouragement when I first joined over a year ago now. The producers for comming up with fantastic arcs and events and my fellow actors for all the fun in IRC. Special mentions go to Nebulai and Galen for their tireless efforts on behalf of the team.
I'd like to thank the other teams in ISD for their efforts that helpped bring the game forward for everyone.
Finally I'd like to thank CCP for running the volunteer program.
AURORA for life, Galen for Emperor!

To what end and to who's benefit? Spending 10 minutes on two forum posts (now 3 for 10.5) is one thing, but I'm not wasting a large chunk of my time writing up something long and drawn out that will likely just fall on deaf ears. Besides, I have provided them clearly with a couple of illustrations of issues through other correspondence. Their problems, however, aren't going to be resolved in a couple of forum posts.

We are the music-makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams; World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems.
With wonderful deathless ditties We build up the world's great cities, And out of a fabulous story We fashion an empire's glory: One man with a dream, at pleasure, Shall go forth and conquer a crown; And three with a new song's measure Can trample an empire down.
We, in the ages lying In the buried past of the earth, Built Nineveh with our sighing, And Babel itself with our mirth; And o'erthrew them with prophesying To the old of the new world's worth; For each age is a dream that is dying, Or one that is coming to birth.

By reading this thread and the original Blog i came to the conclusion that ISD and AURORA volonteers have been fired and that some of them may get an opportunity to do something later...
Something will happen soon(tm) that will be absolutely awesome for someone.
I am sorry, but I am not too impressed by the clarity of this announcement, i may be dyslexic and challanged in some way that has made me completely miss the point here, but to me this is not a good idea, since it seems a bit lagging in the plan department.
I am VERY gratefull to all the volonteers in eve, it has given the game flavour and soul in soo many ways. I realize that not all volonteers have been well behaved all the time, but that, to me, is an acceptable cost to ensure diversity, fyn and crazy stuff... which i love :)
What i fear most of all is CCP becomming a slick organization where everything is decided by groups of professionals that makes sure that NO mistakes is done... ever. Organizations that work that way have a tendency to become booring and predicable... Please someone from CCP... Flame me and tell me that you will still do all the crazy stuff i have come to expect from icelandic ppl :)
If someone in CCP management starts talking about making Eve more main stream and wants to "leverage processes to implement a wider public audience appeal in the main assets consisting of the customorbase currently installed in the main server clusters therby increasing the cashflow potential of the organization".... It simply means they want to make eve more booring and predicable... the direct response by you (dear dev's), is to tell them that you will work dilligently to achieve the visionary and amazing goal.... after which you all go ignore them totally and key their ferrari for good measure :)
I love eve because it is a crazy place where dogs eat dogs and where everything can happen...

TBH almost all of us disagree and think it's a bad move.
The problem is the discussion is done already, CRC will be going away. Coming here and posting about how much we disagree isn't going to matter.
Every day I've gotten home from work, sat down at this computer and opened IRC and always been greeted by friends. This change meant that my friends and I won't be able to do what we wanted to do when we signed up for CRC, help the forums. That hurts. 50 posts about how much this sucks won't do anything, taking the chance to say our goodbyes and wish everyone well is the most useful thing we can do.
Or if you want I can post "this sucks" 50 times in a massive quote pyramid?

I just wanted to throw my salute to the ISD teams in general, but especially to Aurora. Having worked in volunteering for games before, I know just how time consuming and difficult it can be for what is mostly a thankless job - since nobody knows who you are.
You all have done a fantastic job these last few years and I will be saddened to see you go. /me salutes Nebulai for the years of hard work he has put in with the ISD program and also Galen for all of the time he has spent as well making Eve a better, more interactive place.
Good luck with your future endeavors and hopefully we will see Aurora come back in some way, shape, or form at some point in the future. --------- You have now entered the sig zone!

It's sad that people who have given so much of their time to this community have been cast out. I really hope that this has been handled internally with more sensitivity than is visible from the vague descriptions of the dev blog.
There is a stark contrast between the way in which CRC and AURORA have been ejected and the speed at which Wrangler directed people to a Chribba-supported forum following CCP's closure of the trading forums. Are supporters of the community valued or not? I'm sure the answer is yes, but the events of the last 24 hours have done little to give that impression.
I hope the folks of CRC and AURORA will accept my thanks, on behalf of X-Factor Industries, for their dedication in supporting EVE and providing a lot of enjoyment for a great many people.

This whole thing keeps annoying me. Its been a day now and I still get angry when reading how this was handled. It wouldnt surprise me if there was 0 communication with ISD at all prior to this. Just a "thanks and bye" with no reason given.
Of course I dont know this because nobody has the guts to tell it like it was.
Thanks to kieron for answering the questions in the first post though. Thats at least something.
