Under the current system it is possible to never get killed, ever, if you follow a few guidelines.
This needs to be changed, and local is where it needs to start. ----------------------------------------

Edited by: Stitcher on 23/08/2007 16:23:05 under the present guidelines it's possible to send a scout ahead of the fleet ready to gather intelligence on who's there.
Yes, a wary defender can use the forewarning to scarper, but similarly a canny attacker can use the intelligence to drive their attack home.
It balances out.
Oh, and just because something is "possible" does not necessarily mean that it actually happens, now does it? - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

Local only applies to 0.0 fleet battles? I thought it applied to small gang warfare, and piracy, and high sec wars, and virtually every form of PvP?
Knowing who is in local is purely a "Not getting killed" thing, it doesent benefit the "Getting kills" thing. ----------------------------------------

Edited by: Stitcher on 23/08/2007 16:28:23 sure it does. How the hell else does a pirate quickly assess whether there are any guys in the system to go hunt? He'd have to go check all the belts, which is tedious, AND would give more time for the word to get out that he's there, causing people to run away.
plus, if it turned out that the system was empty, he'd have wasted his time. by being able to glance at local and see "ooh! there's somebody here" he saves time that would be spent in a frustrating hunt around the system and can get right down to the fun stuff. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

if they DO nerf local i want an on board ship scanner that pings the entire system for shiptypes and pilot names but no pinpointing. If they do that then MAYBE i'll be in favor of nerfing local. |

You would be in favor of local removal if an exact copy of local was provided to you in another form?

why are you posting this? it's already been stated it will be changed. CCP doesn't nerf things, don't know why everyone uses this term.
anyways, local was not meant to be a way to scout, A dev said this. and thus it will be changed. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP

It might be interesting if local listed a population count but NOT a name list.
Then the average carebear has a decision to make: The pop just went up by 2. Do I risk wasting time by running to my safe spot for no reason, or do I risk staying here and it turns out those two are pirates with fast ships and scramblers come to gank people?

I check the map for active players to see where I should go hunt. Or I check for jumps in the last hour to see a good lowsec system gate to camp (more traffic = more fun). And no you don't have to check all the belts you can just run a scan from a planet in range of all of them.
The only thing I don't like about local is it scares people away from engaging. "Oh he has 2 more corp mates in local. Looks like I'm not going to fight today." Thaaaaaaat's what I hate about local. Granted it could work the other way too. The pirate might think it's only 1 prey but it's really 5 - 10 and the prey could kill the pirate in that situation easily =P ---

Edited by: Kazuma Saruwatari on 24/08/2007 00:38:12 unless there are tools that EVE players can use to replace local (like a more friendly scanner, or a "ship incoming" warning, or even ways to scan for trace warp signatures of someone who just warped, local has to stay.
Its not only for convenience, but coding local out after it's been in and stable for the past 4 years of EVE...well I dont even want to open that can of worms...
EDIT: idea is in my sig btw, old but who knows... -

Ok, if you really want something nerfed here's what I've learned... just start having tons of fun with something (like local in this instance...). CCP will notice this and go "Hmmmm, what's going on here... people are having a good time, we can't allow this! Start the CCP Fun Sucker 2000!!!! MwAHAHAHAHA"

Will you cry for scanners to be nerfed next?
Local might tell me people are in my system. Scanner tells me when to gtfo of my current location.
