TBH he sounded like an idiot anyway, if he stops talking to you over a little thing like that....he evidently wasn't that great a friend.
I've got an RL friend in Eve and i do loads of ebil stuff to him, and he still laughs (borrowing faction modules then faking loss mails with them on it and sending them to him always gets a nice reaction!!)

Although this is "just" a game, a lot of work was put into that POS and you are RL friends so I can understand him going in the huff.
But this is Eve and if he could not defend his POS then he deserves to loose it. Perhaps he now realizes that he should have checked his members smack talk as that is ultimately what cost him his POS.
To quit Eve over it though is a bit much, perhaps he will be back and talking to you once he has calmed down.

With the note saying summat like "I hope your not still sore about our EVE encounter".

Wow... I guess it depends on how good the RL friend was, but I'd have to say hiring the mercs to take out a POS might have been a bit too much of a response for smacktalk, considering you really had no beef with them... The fact your friend quit the game and no longer talks to you kinda sums up the "whoops" aspect here..
then again war dec'ing your friend just seems strange to me in the first place...
