You download them like you download any other file.
To play them, install the CCCP and open them in your favorite media player.

Edited by: ZAPPEL on 28/08/2007 10:13:14 Delete all MKV containers!!! Use industry standards, don't use wannabe an official standard container that is still trying to get a kind of standard. :D
Make your videos are presentable by software/hardware players of your consumer's choice. :)

The only thing I have against MKV is the Ruskies are taking over Eve, one video at a time...
For once, I want a Swedish codec, just so we can say that the Swedes are making a power play!
Tis a good codec though, very sleek movies.
Scary that its not fueled by vodka though.

MKV is awesome. If possible I always download them because I know that they are going to be smaller filesizes than a similar quality avi or wmv. It isn't hard to make them work.
"Ooo no I have to click a link and spend two seconds downloading and installing something that enables me to watch loads of videos from all over the internet."
Every EVE video should have an mkv version.

I always download .mkv version if there is one avaible, I even go as far as to check first couple of pages on the thread to look for DS posts
I used VLC even before DS started his .mkv campaigne so for me it was nature to use it.

I've never really had an issue with .mkv works fine in VLC, easier on the bandwidth too.. Light is faster than sound... this is why some people appear bright until you speak to them... |

Believe me, I tried those lousy mkv vids a the cause more problems then others. There are a lot of good formats that less "complicated" to handle. Something like to use most common codecs (wmv, mpeg, divx, mp4, xvid) that make videos run with all common players on various systems. Now I have to take an extra codecpack (from which I don't know what's he doing alongside installing the mkv codec) and/or I have to use VLC. That's not a very proper solution.
Also there's this new thing to make HD eve movies. Yeah, now vids run way slower on less powerfull machines. Thx to this I have not only lag ingame but also in the video right now! ;) ---

It's useless to talk about mkv, if those guys have no clue about the difference between containers and codecs or don't know what's meant by "standard"...
Well, mkv is the best, if you're using VLC. :) If u want to use other platforms and/or standalone players, the non-standard container called matroksa just sucks.

VLC is cross platform and works on pretty much everything so that point is pretty moot. If you want to use your own player you can always install codecs, and if you can't.. well, that's your problem.
I love mkv vids. And most of the time they are the ones I keep, instead of the .wmv ones. If for no other reason, then simply for the size. After downloading EVE videos for a few years the HDD kind of gets to it's limits.

MKV has the great advantage that eve uses very small font sizes that allmost in all video formats get unreadable, but not in MKV. Or you need massive filesizes and still in most cases the quality is doubtable.
For me it doesn't matter if 'ts a container / codec / standard. It's only a few MB's download (DivX doesnt work when you start your pc the first time. Do you stop watching your favorite movies/series for that reason? I think not) and works normally with WMP.
The only thing is, that now for the first time. You can watch fraps at high and native resolutions. What means that crappy PC's just don't hack it. So I can understand that some don't like that they are put back a bit. That's why I would like to see that movie makers allways make 1 highres "the way they ment it to be version" + make one lowres "low pc power" version (that on average looks better, then the wmv's I see going by ).
Less bandwith higher quality FTW!

The codec that is so great is H.264, which can go in many containers.
MKV is the open-source container, MP4 is the other major container, and AVI is the container used by newbies who don't realize that H.264 in AVI = fail
(The irony is that WMV is proprietary )

listen to him, he knows the difference between codec and container.
small file sizes has nothing to do with mkv.
And ZaKma, I think you don't get my point. :) I don't want to use special open source players even if they are cross-platform because the video makers have no clue about standards and are using open source containers (and we are not talking about file size, quality, codecs and stuff). How do you play mkv on a, let's say, standalone player without mkv support because mkv isn't an industry standard for the mass-market at present?
However, I think, I can't get you turn around and use other containers (and again: other codecs aren't mentioned) for videos. :)
My last word. :)

You could as well pack it into .mp4 which requires a codec as well if I remember right. Anyway it's not really much of a nuisance to download one now is it? Install that and .mkv works with whatever player you use.
