I'm curious if anyone has found any ships + setups particularly effective at looting post-mission completion. Plus any tips for doing this as quickly and painlessly as possible...?

Most people use a destroyer for that, it can fit 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers, in addition to a large enough cargo hold and decent agility and speed with an afterburner. ----

A Thrasher fitted with three tractor beams and five salvagers, two Barton cap rechargers (or higher) and an MWD in the mids, and then your choice in the lows - I personally fit three Cargohold Expander II's on my Catalyst, but some people like to mix and match expanders with speed/agility boosters.

I find the following very effective:
Brutix, 4 tractors, 3 salvagers, MWD and cap recharger IIs in mids, fill lows and rigs with cargohold mods.
I get 700 m/s and 1760 m3.
Only real advice to salvaging is create BMs for each room as you go, complete mission, loot/salvage, but I get the impression from your post that you probably already do this.
If you fill your cargohold repeatedly on a particular mission, jettison a can, and drag this behind you. As you loot/salvage a room, transfer stuff to this can, and when entire room done, BM jetcan. When all rooms done, come back with a hauler. This will save multiple trips to and from a station to unload.

If 4 tractors and 3 salvagers works for you then I think it's pretty clear that, like Lister on Red Dwarf, you don't really spend that much time salvaging, but rather eating curry.
3 Tractors / 4 Salvagers works better because invariably you're going to take longer to salvage then to reel in. Just have to be maddeningly quick about targeting.

I run 2 tractors and 6 salvagers on my Cormorant, with an expander 2, named AB, and as much cap battery as I can fit. It lets me salvage as fast as I can click on things.

In fact I spend a lot of time salvaging - I run 3 or 4 level 4 missions every day, and salvage them all. Though it is true that in some missions the wrecks are so close that the 3/4 tractor/salvager setup is more efficient, there are many level 4 missions where the wrecks are much futher away, and so take longer to reel in. Combine this with the fact that I may be flying through the wreck field at anything from 150 to 700 m/s (depending on distribution), and the reel-in time is longer still. In those situations, I find that the 4/3 tractor/salvager setup is nicely balanced, with the wrecks popping as a new wreck is pulled into range.
Since I don't want to have to change the tractor/salvager ratio for every mission, overall, I find the 4/3 setup to be the best - slightly less efficient for the denser wreck fields, far more efficient for the more widely spread wreck fields.
