Now, with all the "wow this is an amazing patch" and 'hey look at this new feature' bout patches, its gotten me thinking. As a player thats well versed in eve, what would you say was the worst patch you've seen? Now im not talking about the server beeing down, or having to re-install stuff, but the patch where you said 'wow, i cant believe they've done this'.
For me the worst patch ever, was when they removed the +1 drone controlled per level, via drone interfacing. I was at level 4 and bout 80% complete when they announced the change to 20% per level. I thought it to be a huge waste of time, and then put my nose to the grind stone and carried on to level 5. But alas, the days of 15 drons in a Vexor, Ishtar and Dominix (although i only ever made it to 13) was gone, and i was one sad puppy.
So that being said, what has been the worst patch for you? Now im not happy about the NOS changes, but, it still will never compare to losing 15 drones controlled in a cruiser. :(

The "fix" I most disliked was the double halving of the drone bays. For example, the Thorax class ships used to have a 200m3 drone bay. Then it was halved to around 100m3, and then to what it is now, 50m3.
The halving was across the board, every ship with a drone bay if I recall correctly. I really wish I could have 5 Ogre IIs in my Deimos, and the ability to field lights for the hostile frigates... :(

You where never at any point able to fit heavy drones on a deimos. The drone bay halving was done at the same time as halving the size of drones, to make em easier to loot. Except for the thorax of course, that one god smacked with the nerf bat for being epically overpowered. -----

I've been here since Feb' 2004. The patch that stands out to me is the patch changed the science system. Good god It was so much easier to do ME research after they extended the number of science slots. Those days are now over however.
We still haven't recovered from its effects.

Yes...but 15 drones flying around is a whole lot more comforting than 5...5 targets or 15 targets attacking you, that was the whole argument when it was a hot topic. I've let the argument go, i cant change history :(

The dreaded drone patch was by far the one that ticked me off the most...they give us all these new fun drones to work with but then cut the amount you can carry around with u...how stupid...they should have let the drone by size remaine the same so you could still use only 5 drones but you could have a variety of drones in the bay

This is going wayyyy back but I was still semi-new to EVE (maybe 3-4 months in) and had gone for a Blackbird and EW specialist. Well the Blackbird was borked but in a good way (I had no idea, went for it for my own reasons). It's mass or something was off so it flew like a frigate. When CCP changed it the ship went from the fastest, most nimble cruiser in EVE to the slowest, most sluggish cruiser.
Granted a change was in order but that killed me. I insured my Blackbird and blew it up a day later because I couldn't stand it.

I miss the olds days of pvp, where you had duel MWD rifters and the orbit function was broken, so you actually required skil to keep a target tackled, the difference between a good pilot and a newb was astounding, now its just click orbit and f1-f4.
I miss fleet battles being spread out through the entire grid with cavelry ravens mofoing about spewing death at each other while you battled to gain the situational advantage.
I miss the old "ship sinking into the explosion animation" when ships blew up.
I miss old school pirates who did the job properly and were honourable.
I miss eve without pos's, bring back ping pong, anything is better than this rubbish.
I miss the days when a BS was something to awe at, and when you killed one you knew you really hurt the other guy. (No Insurance)
I miss fights where either side doesn't have capitals standing by ready to jump in.
But most of all, i miss the old probing ways. True Covert op pilots were like gods in gangs, now any nob can throw out a probe and think their uber.

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 30/08/2007 06:02:27 Well, about drones and nerfs and such, they only "anger" you if they effect your playing.
Noone thought there was ANYTHING wrong with Khanid changes, that they were just "putting them inline with their background", but alas, when the bat of changes swoops your way(yes i used an animal instead of a baseball bat!), you get "angered" and it's an "outrage".
Funny how "outrageous" a "nerf" is, is directly compared to how much it effects you
NOW! On to the point.
I find that all the patches and versions and downtimes and whines and ..err...grines?...brought us here. And here's fine, for now.
I always find the ever changing EVEverse and it's twists and tricks(not that kind), to be refreshing, interesting and utterly, utmost, most illuminatingly(it's a word!) delightful.
A nerf a day keeps the WoW away!
(Disclaimer: I have nothing against World of Warcraft, Blizzard or any affiliated product/producer/developer and/or customer.)

Worst patch in terms of "oh noes, don't take that away before I can get a taste of it" was when they removed the ability to fit cruise missile launchers on small ships :) I was so close to that cruise-spamming blackbird :) Balance-wise though, it was good stuff. As a caldari pilot at the time, the missile-changes back in 2005 was a bit sad aswell, though much needed.

The worst patch was the one where they removed mines. Sure they were lag demons in their implementation, but the concept of spending time to 'prep' defences was great.

The day the Ravens were balanced and all those missile changes went through.
While it was all fair enough, it left a hole in my heart, knowing I couldn't WTFPWN any class or ship any longer, or complete L4 missions afk with my gist mods running non stop and FOF's handling the rats.

I really liked when you could actually dodge missiles manualy.. It looked really cool and it was one of the things that actually showed who an experienced pilot was. But then CCP went and fixed it so missiles would precede you and they are 100% hit now.
I also miss the old scanning system.. It took real skill and knowledge to pin someone down, while now it's: 1. drop probe 2. wait for result ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

I created my character about 1 week before they changed the attribute requirements around. Back in January 2004, Willpower used to be the primary on gunnery skills - so I maxed it out.
31 willpower three and a half years later is not really that great, after you've trained HAC/Recon/Inty/AF/CovertOps etc to 5.

I miss overpowered ecm, where a merlin fitted with jamming mods would render a cruiser or battle cruiser usless.
When WC4 was still farmable, the 0.0 belt rats before thier spawning rate got nerfed, the stupid amount of zydrine that plush used to yield, non isk rewards from agent missions(wish I had kept those science books they gave me ), when bookmarks were worth more than gold. When a BC still had the inertia of a flying brick :P The broken cosmos agent in Tenal that gave great rewards.
and most of all

Yes, the drone nerf was in place, as it removed a lot of lag ... well, at least until they introduced carriers ;) Too bad it's too easy to shoot down drones these days, especially for missile based boats.

There were some nice "comedy patches", such as the "fun with fonts" patch series, the "print isk with tower price changes you can see on test" patch or the "Harr we're nerfing range / introduction of Rokh" patch. I also have fond memories of the "Shiva patch feature preview" page - everytime you looked, a feature would have mysteriously disappeared.
Silliest changes/features for me are the tech 2 ammo changes, two marketing features (translations, Eve voice), super capital introduction, and heat.

the warp to 0 patch, (or perhaps the one where they introduced bookmarks since that was the first step to warp to 0 and safespots heaven).
Warp to 0 did not fix any lag, ccp could just have easily made instajump bookmarks obsolete by making warp to 15km fully random (as in you end up in a random spot at 15km from your target, not in a straight line from your warp)
On second place comes the patch where they introduced mandatory local (although this was still in beta)

Warp to zero did not reduce lag and was a lazy change to the book mark problem. Book marks caused lag and removing a lot of them and eliminating the need for hundreds of them reduced lag. Coding the game so you can not warp within less than 15km to an object even if you have a bookmark right on it would have been a better change.

This wasn't a patch but the policy of buying and selling isk thru GTC's really bugged me and I felt CCP's "you get what you work for" ideal was blown away. All this meant that PPL with plenty of RL cash or sugar daddies could buy them whatever they wanted. Fair enough alot of noobs lost alot of ISK worth of gear by aquiring it this way, but to me the whole spirit of the game was compromised!

Shiva was the worse patch ever to hit eve atleast in my opinion,
Just the sheeer amount of problems that arouse from that patch deployed was insane. Not to mention it got rid of one of my favourite game GUI's EVER! -

Can't recall which patch it was, but back then I was hunting with my phoon somewhere around Outer Rings and popped easily frigates with one shot, and I usually hit too! After that patch they nerfed projectile's tracking speed and I changed my main ship class into Amarrian because of that nerfage / patch. And now I suffer because I changed into Amarr, as they nerfed amarrians with the stupid khanid MK2. One's sins are never forgotten

My 3 most hated patches and why:
1. The missile nerf......
Missiles were very overpowered, no optimum range to worry about and not many skills to train so CCP decided to fix them... with the most convoluted and rediculous patch possible..
Within 10 minutes of the server coming up after the patch deployment, i saw one player trying to sell his raven for 70mil so he could get an armageddon instead, he was hoping to sell it before people realised how broken the missile ships were, some others were spamming abuse at CCP in the forums etc..
After people had trained up the new skills to un-nerf most of the missile changes they werent too bad, infact standard and heavy missiles are better now, but at the time it left people unable to defend themselves and ravens were dropping in pvp like a joke..
Cruise missiles and torps still feel broken to me, even after a couple of years and its something i will never forgive CCP for, any other form of nerf would have been better than the one we got..
2. Red moon rising (RMR) .. or as i nickname it "red bugs rising"
Ive got nothing against the RMR content only the awful patch deployment, CCP deployed it just before christmas and right from the start there were major problems..
It was taking people over 20 minutes to dock their ships, it took one player over 24hrs to move his ship 12 or so jumps.. Then there was the memory leak that caused alot of players to crash or reboot their client every hour or so.. and of course the constant lag.. it was a nightmare.. so what did CCP do... they gave us some snowballs to keep us happy while they went home for their christmas holidays..., it tooks weeks to fix the bugs and months to get rid of the memory leak..
3. Drone nerf....
Theres nothing more frightening for an enemy then when you launch 8 heavy drones from your thorax and watch their ship vaporize..., launching 4 mediums at them doesn't have quite the same impact even if the drones are stronger than before...
The drone changes amongst many others were designed to reduce lag... what went wrong ?..

Wow...I had almost forgotten about the bookmark removal. That was a more frustrating thing than anything else. Spending all that time (or money if you were lazy) setting up BM's 15 km on the other side of the gate, just to make life a bit easier. Then the anti-lag bat hit and ruined quite a few peoples business' and made me understand that WTZ should have been implemented before i started making those BM's.

1. Don't like the nos nerf. 2. Privateer war dec nerf. 3. ECM becomes Caldari only nerf 4. Free the snow ball launchers!
I know why these changes were made, but I don't have to like them.

no. doesn't count. only one of those that has anythign to do with weaponsystems is reloading. and they do that automaticaly when they run out. drones... can't be reloaded. when you're out, you're out. gief drone commands in F9-F12 __________________________________ Gallente by birth. Edited by: Fantome on 30/08/2007 14:36:20 Perhaps not the worst but at least a two old a bit funny, i still remember from the first eve days :
1. The patch which introduced NPCs at gates : those drone were cruisers and over powered when prolly most of all players was still in frigate, no warp to 0 : each time yuo were blew out before to get the gate, many players were moved out back in empire by GMs .
2. The one introducing bumpage.. bump was so important on stucture than yuor ship was each time send in no where in the system at 999999 au closest first celestial objet... still heavy job for GMs ! It was the implimantation of super highways that made me quit the first time. I had over 3k bms for different trips to the furthest south (pre BoB nubs) that had to be based 10km BEHIND gates to allow you to get close enough to the gates to avoid being killed. I still have plenty of bms that are for arknor etc that, due to badly planned belt grids, meant that I could mine invisable to anyone in the belt. Filling Bestowers with Ark and making a 200 jump round trip were the days ... *sniff* Mind you, it was worth it cos EACH unit was worth at least 12k each .... me rich!

lol i remember that.. haveing to be worried about flying to close to secure cans for fear of being bumped '00s of AU away, i had a nice set of safe spots that couldn't be found (before probes) from getting to close to cans.
But what about the bumping ships as you come out of warp bug... and gangs not being able to move quickly cous you had to wait at every gate for the guys who got bumped to slow down and get back.

Rev 2.
Making it so you have to go through POS after POS, after POS to even think about having a shot at someone's outpost is incredibly stupid and boring. I know they think they're being clever and cool about it but really, it would be soul-crushing to do it as a job.

Least fav. change: losing the dual mwd 13km/s vigil :-P
As for Warp to zero.. Personally I've found it to be a very good change.
So many lazy or unimaginative pirates stopped competing with the real pirates, and so many care bears think they are safe... Does it not occur to people to fit a sensor booster or two and catch them when they decloak before warping to the next gate?
Seriously, with so many "waaah I can't piwat anymore" and so many "We can travel safly now!!" I've found my average income has more than tripled.

The biggest wtf for me was the utter utter nerfing of NPC's in belts.
There was a time when a fully tanked dominix would cry at a 2x 750k Angel Warlord spawn with a few Legionnaire cruisers, now people can safely rat 3x 1.85m spawns in a brutix

It forces me to abandom my Kestrel of doom and replace it with a Drake.
The fun killing 150k Rats with a Kessy was gone. :-(
I do not speak about the CMS, only the standard missiles.

Give me a break, travelling in EVE is like a McDonalds Drive through now.
Want to kill blobs? Get rid of it and prevent BMs around gates.

Exodus was by far the worst patch in the history of CCP patches. It introduced lvl 4 agent missions in high sec, and did the exact opposite of what CCP intended. Economy went out of control, and the value of isk plummeted. Essentially, pvp became cheap and the game became a massive fps-styled gankfest.
Warp to Zero is perhaps the worst feature in any patch. I don't think EVE is true to its roots as long as such crap continues to exist.

Originally by: Cartiff I miss the olds days of pvp, where you had duel MWD rifters and the orbit function was broken, so you actually required skil to keep a target tackled, the difference between a good pilot and a newb was astounding, now its just click orbit and f1-f4.
True Covert op pilots were like gods in gangs, now any nob can throw out a probe and think their uber.
wow sound like what i think...
i miss mostly the old pirat days. where you could actually choose to be a pirat, nowadays there seem to be no way to hounour this proffesion wich is after my opinion very sad for eve...
hell i remember being a n00b in 2003 meeting m0o he he stavr0s telling me to hand over 2 mill isk for the escape of my frigate. 2 mill seemed much but my corp helped me and they actually let me go!
later i joiend with the pirats ;) and damn i miss it.. m0o get back in line damnit..!!!! OMFG
