If you can come up with a way to have 600+ people in one system and not have it lag with today's technologies, then you're a bloody genius.

Originally by: JonnyWarhawk Well, the internet is still a pretty new technology. Just 6 years ago, pretty much everyone was on 56k which was barely even usable for online gameplay. A big problem is connecting the instantaneous actions of about 400-800 people all within a small area of one another, and doing the math on only 1 server. The game has been known for at least supporting large-scale combat (which it does) but over 350 people is really pushing today's general technologies.
The fact is that this game does support larger battles than any other game. I remember WoW servers completely crashing when you brought 50 Horde into Ironforge. Final Fantasy XI literally dies when you have huge amounts of people in a small town and Guild Wars had to rely on completely distancing everyone into different districts of towns in order to spread out the lag.
I understand that lots of people are mad because maybe they got popped while lagged or can't even login to play, but all I can say is that as time goes on and newer and better forms of broadband become more readily available, things like this will cease to exist and it will be the 5000 person fleet battle lags that people will whine about. I myself have fiber optic cable which is incredible reliable and has very high bandwidth speeds but it isn't available in most parts of the world. Once more companies realize how profitable it is, and more people begin to use it in EU and AUS, we can expect to see some incredible enhancements to large-scale gameplay.
Umm... we had several hundred engaged in mass combat in DAoC. Sure, it lagged like a ****, but quite a bit of that was system / connection lag, as your computer shat out its own liver and kidneys trying to render 200 players and several dozen simultaneous spell effects.
Of course, when you're talking about a 200-v-200 fleet battle in EVE, you're leaving out the thousand-odd drones that'll be out and moving. That ups the object count significantly.

If CCP gave a crap they would be imbaressed about the hole desaster, i feel so sorry to the peeps that lost ships in this lag fest.
CCP, you have made this game so the game need to be played with large fleets yet you can not make it playable like this, and not playable by a LONG SHOT!

The next trailer CCP makes should be a battle where you see two large fleets who travels towards eachother then 90% of them sudedenly dissapear as the people controlling them looses their connection.

Youre not a genious when you create game mechanics that breaks the game.
"epic fleet battles" are CCP's own words.

The game is being promoted because they need to replace the players who have cancelled their accounts, of course.
Besides, the game is only unplayable for some of those several 100s who actually engage in Alliance warfare / large fleet battles, and of those, many are too addicted to care much. So it's not really a big problem for CCP, why would they make that a priority when they can give us 3D gallente chicks with big boobs in stations. :-/
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...

Hehe.. yeah, I remember when they whined that 200 people couldn't slug it out without people getting disconnected. I bet that 200 people can today.
