Edited by: LimoDriver on 01/09/2007 20:52:18 i used to be a proud member of frege allience and even now its makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up to hear frege pronounced incorrectly
if u say the word free and put a g on the end that is the correct way to say it. plz for the love of god cant one of the commentators take the time to jump on ts with a frege member so they know how to announce the dam names.
i was really happy to hear a fridge had won its first round i was backing a washing machine personally. then i found out it was frege and was even happier.
this is almost as bad as morsus mihi getting called morsus teehee last torny. its very rude and highly unprofessional to be pronouncing these names wrongly. and anyone in the media should be doing there reseach well enought to pronounce a name correctly

hehe, i don't think they meant it maliciously, depending on country and region etc, the same word can be pronounced many different ways and still remain correct

The general degradation of journalistic integrity on the internet can be directly attributed to the concomitant degradation of grammatical integrity amongst the internet populace.
In Other Words: You're not helping matters any by a) not using appropriate capitalization, b) not using appropriate punctuation, c) using nonstandard abbreviations.
In fact, what you're saying is that you don't care enough about your audience to respect them with properly formatted English. Why should you expect them to respect you in the same way?
Disclaimer: I have yet to see an episode of EVE TV. I will be checking it out presently. But if the announcers are Western European / North American English speakers, then "Fridge" is a perfectly reasonable pronunciation. TANSTAAFL |

No. If I go to England (im named Torstein) I would be offended if people called me like it would be pronounced if it was an English word without showing any sign of adapting.
A NAME does not have any variety in pronounciation. Of course compromises can be made but in general names does not change pronounciation over boarders/countries/languages/dialects. I think you would mind if I pronounced "fire 59" as it does in Norwegian. --- Signature radius: 150 mm Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

I would tend to agree with you, that a name should be pronounced according to the rules of its native language and the preference of the owner. However, if a native speaker of a language foreign to me were to pronounce my name according to the rules of his language, and the sounds that came out represented a dire insult as interpreted by the pronunciation rules of my own language, I would not be offended. If you are offended by such, it is my opinion that you really have to want to be offended.

Thanks, chief. And while we're at it, "Upon Further Review," I thought torswin was saying that "Fire 59," pronounced according to Norwegian rules, would say "your mother is a Scouser" to the English ear. I misunderstood. What torswin is (I think) saying, is that "Fire 59" sounds different when pronounced by a Norwegian and a Londoner. Guess what? It sounds more differenter when pronounced by a Bostonian and a South Corolinian. Over the years I've been on TS with people from Every coastal state in the US and a couple of the middle ones Every Canadian Province Every United Kingdom Seven EuroNations Two former SSRs (don't ask, I'm not allowed to tell) Ozzie and Enzedd Singapore
Not a one of those ninnies pronounced my internet name the way I would have. The guy from Rhode Island was the worst, though.

I always thought it was pronounced "freej". Still do I suppose, although "freyj" and "fredge" also work.
I can't see myself pronouncing it "freeg" though, with a hard G. It just doesn't look like that. ------

I think you are way too up yourself to the point of ignorance if you expect that everyone from wherever they come from will pronounce your name 'correctly' (correctly being the relative term).
Instead of whining like an old woman and effectively insulting people you could try a quick correction.

Go to any english speaking country and ask them to say the name of the country France.
Then tell them how to correctly pronounce France.
Then realize you look like you're being a bit of a jerk. I speak French and I don't even say France the way it's supposed to be said when I speak english. I say it the english way.
And no this isn't a ***** on the french. I'm just saying.
I do say free-juh though. And I was a little surprized at how much trouble the commentators had saying "Nam-tzar-kin" it's really not that tough.

We're current members of FREGE, and I actually have heard it accented as "fredge", "fridge" "freege" "freeg" and so on.
For right now though, as proud CEO of the Guardian pilot Altarn Ramos, you can pronounce it "WIN".
Regardless of what comes after, it was an awesome thing for our corporation to see our member participating and representing our alliance and our corp, doing what he does so well for us on a daily basis.
