I am a new player to EVE and having great difficulty in finding people to talk to through the chat channels (the ones for new players goes so fast!) and was wondering if there's an easier way to meet people, 90% of the reason I play online games is to play with other people.
Basically I'd just like to meet some new and old players so I have people to talk to and fly with, and maybe in the future get into corporations with etc.
Anyone have any tips?

If you want a tight band of players to fly with, check out the recruitment channel, or maybe jon eve university for a while. ITs a corp that helps nublets like yourself.
If you like RPG there are RP corps out there, I hear they have good relations. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

Just start talking to people mate, say "hello" in local and ask people what is up, many are happy to share details of their day or their feelings towards the game and etc.
And if that fails drop me a message ingame and I will talk to you while I am ratting (I will talk to anyone while I am ratting, just to keep my brain working).

Hehe I've tried saying hello but it's either off my screen as quick as I hit enter, or it just stays with no response! :">
I think part of the problem is with it being space I only ever see other people when I am at a station or a gate, rather than passing people while I do missions hehe.

you could try resizing the chat window, this usually helps. Also, try hitting the smaller font button, which makes the text smaller. this should help you as well. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

Well normally you talk with people by either local chat or joining an corporation. If you aren't in a corporation I will advise you to join one now. There are some corps dedicated to help newbies, but I didn't use that offer though.
You can look ingame (lots of places have cans with advertising for corps) or the forum area for recruitment http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=channel&channelID=109585 You can look if a corp or make a post yourself and say what you wish to have. There should be a few offers for you.

The recruitment forums are here.
If you go into systems where ppl are running missions, there should be quite a few ppl who stay in system longer, and may be up to a chat.
What are you planning on doing in the future? It pretty much determines what steps to take next... ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

You don't need to be in LoS to people for them to see any message you type in local. Also, have you tried resizing your chat window to make it larger? Cos that should give you more time to read things before they've been replaced. Other than that, welcome to EVE, don't fly what you can't afford to lose, watch out for scammers, pirates and other nefarious types, and above all, have fun ^^.

Thank you :->
edit: sorry, this is Tatsa, just the first char I made.
It's the apparent lawless-ness of EVE that makes it so appealing, reminds me of the early days of Ultima Online where anyone with more money than sense who left a guarded area was generally taught a sharp lesson. It's no fun when everyone gets their hands held.
Eventually I want to aim towards PVP but am content to run missions until I get in the swing of things (and enough money to make a few ships disposable) but at the moment I am just happy to learn things and meet people.

Yeah, non-consensual pvp, and the fact that if you lose a ship, it is a tangible loss (rather than "Oh no, I died. *Click release spirit, make corpse run, click "Resurrect Now", rinse, repeat*") are two of the major factors that drew me to EVE (that and one of my RL friends didn't stop bugging me til I started playing ).
If you're looking to get into PvP, start sooner rather than later, the ships are cheaper to replace, and much more exciting to fly, and when flown well, can take down ships many times their size, flown by characters many times the pilots age. Although if (at this stage) you're attached to your security status (and want to have the ability to go back into high sec space at will, just go for ships and not pods if you're pirating.

As I've been led to believe the only consent you give to PVP in EVE is joining up in the first place. I fully understand why people wouldn't want to engage in PVP (I think...) but from what I see and read, some of the times PVP will engage with you whether you like it or not. I like this idea, that you're never safe, it means when you lose out big you generally have yourself to blame and as they say, there's no fun without risk.
Thanks for the tips, I currently learning how to fit ships and things, as there's so much to it trying to figure out optimal everything. I bought myself a rifter because from reading around it seems to do what I want to, tho at the moment it doesn't seem to be tackling missions as well as my previous incursus but that's probably because I am an idiot, so might throw my old incrusus at a PVP and see how it fares once I've sorted myself out. I do eventually want to engage in pirating, but not until I've built up a decent friend base and understand what I'm doing.

Join a corporation, for example eve university, they even teach you the basic ropes of the game to get you settled.
Most random chatting is done in corp channels or in the public corp channels.

As I'm at work and not at my computer I'll have to get as close as I can off the top of my head.
The Incursus has 2 light ion particle accels, got depleted uranium as ammo in them because a pirate droppeda load, and a 150mm rail gun which i liked the look of, has civ. shield booster, armor repair, and some other things that i've forgotten, I think I had a cap power relay on there because I was losing a lot of energy. It seems okay on my level 1 missions as most ships die between 2 and 4 cycles of the guns, apart from the bigger ones.
The Rifter I have 3x 150mm light auto cannons (i think they are?) and 1 rocket launcher, a makulth (sp?), I ahve only been playing for 3 days so lack the skills to put on shield hardeners and such at the moment, so I have the civ shield booster again, another armor repair and another shield unit which speeds up regent, plus 2 cap power relays and a 1mn afterburner.
I was thinking of taking out one of the 150mms andp utting in another rocket cause it seems to work better and will try it later tonight.
There's probably a lot of holes in my post as I'm typing it in between phone calls and my brain is full of holes at the best of times hehe.

Hmm, your setups could do with a bit of work, but at 3days old that's to be expected.
I'd suggest keeping the 3rd autocannon on your rifter, as the ship gets bonuses to them. I'd also suggest that you armour tank your rifter if you're going to pvp in it. Small armour repairer (try and get out of using Civilian modules as quickly as possible), 200mm plate and other module of your choice (gyrostabiliser, nanofiber internal structure, overdrive injector are some common ones) in the low slots. That leaves your mid slots free for microwarpdrive (or afterburner if you can't fit a mwd), stasis webifier and warp scrambler.
The incursus I use as a "do or die" ship, as such I use 3 blasters, web, scrambler, mwd, magnetic field stabiliser and plate on it, with a hobgoblin or warrior in the drone bay.
Another suggestion would be to concentrate on one races ships before branching out into other races. ----------------------------------------------

Thanks, I will take that on board and have a fiddle around this evening - reading this forums is helping a lot but I still don't have a lot of skills so am waiting on them hehe, am picking up bits and bobs from reading about different builds, it's always handy when someone gives me some help! WIll try yours out tonight and let you know how it goes.
I do intend to stick to one races ship, and the incursus I just used because it came to me for free. I will keep with my rifter, tho the old one is still in the hangar should I get blown up or whatever, the rifter seems more what I want out of a ship, more something I'll have fun learning the ins and outs of it.
Hopefully after a few more days I wont feel so swamped by information and will be able to better piece together a ship I feel comfortable in.

Yeah, the rifter is an amazing ship, my joint favourite frigate (alongside the punisher, which is just nasty if you set it up right). If you want any more advice/suggestions/tales of rifter piracy in all it's amusing glory, I'll probably be online this evening, so feel free to convo me at some point, I may be an ebil pirate, but I'm a nice person really ----------------------------------------------

Be Cheeky! You only really need to catch the attention of one person in eve as everyone is connected. One very good way to start is to offer to work in any mining gangs you find. Fly low sec and get blown to smithereens then ask the guy that did it to you if he can teach you how I made a lot of friends in Rens. People are more amicable there than Jita i think.

Join the gallente channel (under Empires in the chat selection interface) , it is spammed a bit but people should invite you to the player made version (that isn't)
Try moving to a system with less than 30 people in it , and chat with people you meet in the belts , it's a good start.
If you want to start pirating early , just convo me.

I've been contemplating that very notion, but can never find an actual mining gang to begin with (probably because when i mine, i do my best to find systems that actually still have some omber or kernite left in them on thursday, which is mainly done by finding systems that have a very low population or are even completely deserted). Is there a channel in game or another way to join mining gangs without immediately having to join the corp that started them?
