Edited by: fugimi on 06/09/2007 11:41:32 Greetings,
I'v been in eve for almost a year now, and i'v seen quite alot of scams and spams, Some of which can be easely eliminated and prevented.
Isk Sellers Channel and Mail Spams
Our problem is ofcourse cluttering channels and mailbox.
CCP problem is that isk sellers reach eve community with no costs and with ease.
ISK Sellers tool is trial accounts that can be created annonymously and for no cost without any limitations as far as spamming is concerned.
Extremly Simple Solutions:
1: Add "Do not accept Mail from Trial Accounts" Option in Mailbox Settings. 2: Trial accounts will be limited to 1 mail every 5 minutes (if they want a faster way of communicating there is convo and channels). 3: Prevent Trial Accounts from joining some channels that none paid accounts have no reason to be in whatsoever, but are filled with isk spam all day long. EG: CEO Channel.
Now about Contract/Price Scams
Problems and Extremly easy solutions:
WTB Price Scam/Exploit/Contract Spam: i belive the cause and solution to this problem is in the way the game show prices. the reason those Exploits work is because all prices in eve have .00 at the end. some people can mistake that for 000 becoz of possible many reasons as working in HIgh resolutions , Tired , Temporary Pettern Recognition Brain Malfunction (lol). this can cause griefing to new players as well as old players. this also create alot of contract spam as a result.
Solution - change the SIZE and COLOR of the .00 isk in all prices.
.10x Scam/Spam Shows: Problem is that this does work since people (mostly kids and young minds) are fooled by the show scammers create in channel and that encourage more and more scammers to spam popular channels all day long.
Solution - Instruct GM's to warn and mute petitioned scammers of this sort of spam and temporary/permenantly ban those accounts for misconduct if/as they do it over and over again.
There are ofcourse more types and ways to scam, Feel free to point them out, as long as you offer a viable solution (try to keep solutions easy for CCP so this might actualy get done)

Scammer is not considered as a problem but as a valid profession in EVE, it's part of the piracy system such as Corp thieves and ore thiefs.

contract scams are easy to spot as it is. If the ISK amount is RED, you pay it. If the ISK amount is GREEN, you will receive it.

The solution to the ISK sellers spamming is to report the spammers to their ISP. And also to some DNSBLs. Eventulally they will get the message that spamming in Eve will result in pain and they will stop it.
Also CCP could follow Blizzard's lead and issue writs.
Just cause we a living in a virtual world does not mean that real life anti-spam laws do not apply.

I want to remind ppl to keep in mind that we will have lots of negetive and dismissive replies from Scammers.
as for scamming being a profession in eve, not true, afaik CCP does not support scamming and never will.
i can understand why ccp dont want to get involved in endless scamming problems since it will require lots of resources.
but if CCP can eliminate and prevent scams/exploits i belive they should and probably would if the solutions are simple and dont require large resources.

The only thing that is frowned upon is abusing newbies. Though some pirates put interesting trades on market to drag them into lowsec and this is allowed.

This increases by 1 every time a user pays for an account so people could still have more than 1 account.
EG. 1. Get trial on specific IP, your IP gets locked out of being able to apply for a trial.
2. Like the game and pay for it
3. Get another trial allocated to your IP (only 1)
4. If that trial is used and expires that account will the be the only one able to be activated later on by paying. You wouldnt get another trial allocated to you as you have this one avaliable.
They would soon run out of IP's.

if you look again you will see that half the problems i mentioned are illegal in eve, and the other half causing alot of spam which is also illegal.
as for the .00 problem, the source of the problem is confusing game mechanics and the fault is the way game mechanics draw the numbers.
the .10x scam/spam shows are as i said spam and there for illegal, but they also have elements of other eula vilations as well in some cases, like linking ppl chars and making them a part of the scam against their knowledge/will.

Scamming is allowed. The only changes there would be to make the interface clearer so the scammers have to actually resort to their ability to persuade the greedy and the gullible rather than put all their egs into a poorly designed user interface (the Jita 419 scam would fall in the first category, the decimals scam in the second).
I am all in favor of making it impossible for ISK sellers to use free trial accounts to advertise their wares. I would in fact go so far as to disallow any trial character from joining any other channel than help, rookie help (nonitored by ISD) and corp chat, and limit what they can do in chat (for example, censor out anything that looks even remotely like an URL). That way, if they want to continue spamming like they do, at least they will have to use fully paid for accounts to do it.

Bad solution, lots of resources, and wouldnt work anyway.
it will require using the database and an active filter for the ip's. dynamic ip's can be assigned to other ppl on the same isp and can cause some freak acccident of blocking an innocent player. and dynamic ip also mean that the isk spammer could just reconnect and get a new ip. u want to start blocking entire isp's now ?
