Hi all,
I think you all know this lurching behavior of all ships when reaching a target after an "approach" or "keep at range". Ship is stopping an starts to turn around really fast.
I know there are more important topics, but it disturbs my "very-big-and-massive-space-ship feeling" *g Especially the bigger ships should turn much more slower IMHO!
On the other hand: alignment to warp is ok - it takes it's time depending on ships size. So it's only this approaching and turning thing.
I'm aware of the problems with collision detection in games. And real collisions with damage and explosions are no solution in eve IMHO.
My suggestion: make ships turning much more slower and let them intersect in free space. Just like after undocking from a station! Maybe it's even a simplier solution than the current collision model.
Summary: intersecting ships wouldn't disturb me as much as "dancing" ships.
Maybe the new trinity2 engine brings a new physics engine?
Comments?

(Miss Teen South Carolina tone) I personally believe that...
No, seriously, I think CCP has much more important things to fix than this. I agree that seeing a battleship wiggle left and right at idle doesn't make sense, but I'd rather CCP invest man-hours into other stuff rather than this, which I can live with as it has no impact on gameplay.

So long as guns align themselves to targets and missiles are fired out of a mysteryous orifice in the center of the ship, the direction in which it points is irrelevant.

perhaps because no one cares? or perhaps because, as you said, this isnt that important of an issue? this isnt the REAL WORLD, dont expect everything to jive the way it should in RL.

Nice argument. It's a game. And immersion is important for any game IMHO.
But anyway, as I said before - this issue is not _that_ important. I posted it in "EVE General Discussion" (not in "Known Issues & Workarounds" or something!) because I was curious about other opinions.... Thanks for your posts!

Get a dreadnought and try maneuvering that around, then say that again.

Based on how my tempest rocks in my hangar, I think its quite logical that it can turn around pretty fast. The real question is why it doesnt fall apart when it does this, or when somene slaps a wet hanky against the hull. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

i think it would help a lot if they would reduce speed as they get closer to the object they are approaching - instead of suddenly trying to stop while going full speed. i do this manually all the time and it makes ship movement seem much smoother and more elegant.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
Agree with OP. I love this game, but the way ships bounce around when you come into contact with somthing has always bugged me. I can see a small frig bouncing around but when you get in a much bigger ship it just looks silly. Ever see drones make a battleship dance? Drones should smash into a million pieces on its side! As deep and complex as this game is, a little attention to detail would go a long way.
The way missiles strikeing a ship make it "dance" bothers me a little, just cos it looks sooooo silly, watch the video of the goons killing bobs avatar and the way the missiles make it dance around.... its just silly, and i for one hope the new graphics engine fix's it. -
I wish the game had proper collision detection, and there was some decent automatic avoidance autopiloting of ships, planets, stations, etc. I HATE intersection (especially warping through stations and planets) it really breaks my immersion, but I'm happy to put up with it because I'm guessing it would be far too complicated to implement proper collision detection, and the game is laggy enough as it is. But ideally, I'd prefer that.
The "bobbing" also bothers me, but not as much as intersection.
and massive, unimaginably high tech spacecraft are reduced to ramming each others like giant space conkers in order to shift each other away from gates/station docks.
The lurching/rolling behaviour fits nicely into this farce
I suggest ships that spins randomly ALL the time. This way we will never get bored of watching our mothership buzzing around in circles, it will always look exciting... oh and please program a feature where the players get an 1UP when he makes a triple barrelroll, i seen that from a good nintendo game once.
