Buy a older car. I had a VW Polo 1.6L and only was ú500 insurance first year. Or if you want to go NED (chav) the old corsa's the new ones are a grnad to insure with most companies. But i wouldn't buy the swift yet its a nice car but you bump your first car and well its not nice having a new car and having a bump in them.
Think you can do better than me. Well send me link in game |

Put it in your moms name. Have the insurance in her name. Have yourself as a named driver. Then you might be able to afford the insurance. **I move away from the mic to breathe in |

Five grand on a first car? Don't do it!!
Get something cheap and cheerful for now and wait until you've actually learned to drive properly before making a major investment in a set of wheels.
Just remember, passing your test means that you can make a car go, not that you can drive well; that comes with practise.
It would be a shame to prang a nice, shiny Swift if you make a noob mistake at a set of lights two months after you start driving solo.
Go for something like an old(ish) Corsa or a Peugot 106 (don't laugh; they are stonking little motors), or equivalent.
Lots of them about, cheap to run, and you'll cry a lot less if you grooge it. Easier to get bits for from scrappys too (Suzuki main dealers charge bum-sex prices for parts). ú1500 should get you something quite reasonable, and if you bend it badly, it's a lot less to wave goodbye to.
Might be better to wait until you've a couple of years experience (and no-claims bonus) before getting something nice.
Good luck with your test anyway.
Just remember that every other motorist is out to kill you, and NEVER, EVER take anyone's word for anything where indicators are concerned; wait to see what they are doing, not what they say they are doing.
Just my two penn'orth

I'd be interested to see how you could look cool in that! Old cars have so much more character. Like I have to open my passenger door by winding down the window and opening it from the outside...

Given what I know as a Yank about how Limey insurance works, but, IMHO: Look for a rear wheel drive conveyance above all else. If you really want to learn how to drive. Don't get yourself into some chav gti or summat. Do they have Mazda mx-5 there? Get one. ***** (that's a bad word? Crunch, then.) Crunch it up. No loss. You're young. You'll ***** (crunch) it up. No offence. Accept it. Don't get your baby now. Get her later. Get a beater now. TANSTAAFL |

I'm going to have to chime in with the "old car" crowd here... Get an older, cheap car as your first one. Use it to learn how to drive properly, what's really important in a car to you, risk factors to look out for, and, if you're so inclined, learn what makes it tick and what makes it stop.
My first and present car is an Audi 80 '87. Some would call it dodgy but it wins the "most bang for your buck" competition hands down. Cheap to buy, run and maintain (cheap and plentiful spare parts). Sure, I've had to replace the exhaust and front wheel bearings and it's currently bleeding brake fluid (nagging suspicion confirmed 40 minutes ago), but these are things that all car owners should be familiar with or at least recognize and know how to deal with IMHO.
I certainly wouldn't know much about it if it had never broken down (and don't give me that "if it doesn't break down you don't have to know"). I'm not saying I fix everything myself, but I do my homework and determine the extent and cost of repairs. Good to know, you know. Also gives you an edge when haggling over another car as you can point out flaws (and hide them in the car you're trying to sell ).
Erm, I just realized two things. One, I'm ranting (again) and two, I've probably put you off buying a car even remotely similar to mine . Let me just say that for all its failings I still love my Audi and I'd hate to part with her as she's got many, many miles left to go. I'll fix her up and she'll pass the "besiktning" (or MOT test as I'm led to believe you UK people know it) with flying colours just like every year. Yessir, she has style and personality. Effortless cool
Another reason to go for older cars is of course that their price won't drop much at all (unless, ahem, the brakes, exhaust or bearings fail ), so you haven't got much to lose by getting one.

Get a second hand POS, and drive it into the ground. First cars have a bad habit of getting wrecked. Keep it cheap and Cheerful!

Well...
That Nissan is ugly
This is the car that i really want, its just the best of the around 5 grand cars that i could possibly get.. im not getting it if its boxy.. just because im not..
I would consider a cheaper car if i liked it, but i think this is the one i like, and i could not live with myself driving something i didn't like.
