Perception is a double-edged sword. Many people perceive Linux as being "better" but can't offer any concrete reasons for it. Some perceive Windows as being inferior, not because it is but because that's how they feel it should be.
Many people come to these types of conversations believing that the inherent inferiority of Windows or the inherent superiority of anything that isn't Windows or from Microsoft is not only self-evident, but that only fools and the ignorant could possibly believe otherwise.
The real fact of the matter is that Windows is a truly amazing feat of engineering, as is Linux and MacOS. Each has great features and some shortcomings. By and large, they tend to have more in common than most zealous adherents of one or the other would have you believe.
Whether your decision to use a particular platform is driven by your needs and an objective evaluation of what each one available to you offers, or is driven by your desire to avoid one platform for ideological reasons- knock yourself out. Go wild.

Dont listen to the OP Buy more Vista...and buy more Linux too. Its making me a ton of money fixing.
Troubleshooting guide to Vista: 1. open services.msc and print 2. Tape printout to wall and grab 50 darts 3. Throw darts at printout and Disable the services on the list that were punctured by the dart until your darts run out
If this does not fix your problem, open gpedit.msc and repeat steps 1-3
Troubleshooting guide to Linux 1. Reboot to clear corrupted journal files 2. Reboot to clear corrupted journal files 3. Reboot to clear corrupted journal files
If this does not fix your problem, Reboot and repeat steps 1-3 _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. You have'll have to find some alternative means to do Your Thing, dude. |

ôHowever, I am curious, out of all of you that managed to somehow STAND the atrocity that Vista is... why ? Its far better once setup correctly and run on high end hardware its way faster/More responive then XP.
From being powered down in the new mode, fans, lights e.c.t all off it takes 3 to 5 seconds to get to the desktop. Once on the desktop you can load and use programs straight away. XP means waiting till everythingÆs loaded.
In short 5 seconds from turning my monitor on I can log in, load up mail and start working. In XP would still be waiting for the desktop to load.
Vista is faster and more response then XP once it has been running a week and if you turn on high performance, which is off by default. Vista gets faster over time its very slow for the first few days which is what puts most people off. Make sure you turn on all the enhanced speed options as well.
Vista has been more stable then XP for me. Not one BSOD or crash yet.

Never had a problem, I like it better than XP since it's integrated, and I run it on an pretty old laptop, but I have 2gigram, and things feel way smoother anyways:)
" Not only do you need a freakishly expensive video card which will be absolete in half a year (or one year tops), but you also have a very limited (read: not much of a) selection of games that ONLY run on DX10 mode."
For the DXGames maybe, but not for vista :)
"And I won't even begin talking about how everything ELSE runs slower as in XP" Might in some cases, I don't know of this since it runs perfectly well on my laptop.
"how the networking is borked at times" Never even heard of O.o
I think it was a great upgrade both in looks and flexibility, as well as how the new searchfunctions wtfpwnz0rz all.

Edited by: Steneskoj on 19/09/2007 10:16:14 Edited by: Steneskoj on 19/09/2007 10:14:58 Vista is actually very good, atleast has been so far for me. And uh, someone said that DX10 was overrated? lol. And yes, you can play vritually every freaking game on this planet, so you're not limited to DX10 technology, although you are the only one who can take advantage of DX10 technology, which by the way makes games look so good it's silly. Yes, you will need some sort of kickass video card but they are not that expensive. And no they won't be "absolute" in half a year.
Vista is MUCH faster than XP, atleast if you have the right juice in your computer. I have 3 Ghz CPU and 4gb RAM, and it is not only fast but also very stable. It has never crashed.
*EDIT* While I'm at it, since I know there's alot of confusion regarding the matter: Games who use DX10 technology will be able to run on XP, but you will not be able to use all those freakishly good looking thingies that goes with DX10 since uh, you're not able to use it. People who have VIsta will be able to use DX10 features, but if they don't have the juice they can turn all those effects off so the game is still playable.
Example of DX10 effects in action: http://www.incrysis.com/wiki/index.php/Crysis_Graphics

Who would watch a movie on a computer screen?
I run 32-bit Vista. I play Battlefield 2 with it, no prob. It's DX 9c, I'm using DX 10. I play Age of Empires III with it. Works with no problem whatever. In fact, the graphics (naturally) are better than with my XP machine, and faster. There's Sierra/Tilted Mill's Caesar IV, which plays like a dream; again a DX 9c game running with DX 10. What else? Oh yeah, my NES and SNES emulators work just fine with it.
Admittedly, I'm using 3 gigs of RAM, but I used that with my XP machine to get the most out of Battlefield 2's graphics. And, for the same reason, plus speed and framerate, a dual-core processor...great stuff, but must have for BF 2 even with an XP machine...it just makes life so much....sweeter.
And, of course, there's my wide, flat-screen. They all run fabulously on it and Vista supports it with no problem. In fact, I have no speed problems whatever. Then, I know how to shut down proprietary software running in the background. I have just the significant processes running at bootup. I have an XP disk right here on my desk, and even though it's a great OS, I haven't once reached for it in frustration. Doubt I ever will.
Everyone's graphics card is either obsolete, or on a fast track there. Most of the machines for sale in stores only have Vista on them, and it's more than likely in the coming months writing programs for Vista will become the norm, while for XP will become a quaint novelty.
I don't want to argue about it. You asked, so I'm sayin'. Buggy whips became passe, too. If I'd owned one, I doubt I'd be decrying the automobile. Even though XP (with its humongous SP-2) is a great OS, comparing the two is meaningless, unless as the above poster(s) say, you have an inadequate machine. Then, of course, I can understand your hostility.

Go into device manager and click hard disks, on the window that opens up click policys then click enhanced performance.
"But you DO realize you can get at very least same performance and functionality from Win XP? All, but DX10 games." ThatÆs not true. On high end hardware Vista is far faster then XP. XP has less functionality as well, unless you use slow mods or the like. Passive shield tanking guide click here |

I'm about to spend ú1100 on a new computer (self build) and I can guarentee that I will NOT be using Vista. XP Pro FTW!! I made a comp for a friend a few weeks back and he can use anything that he had before, all of his editing software is borked, his music software etc all worthless. He downloaded new drivers + add-ons from PS, Adobe, Zone Alarm and none of it works right now.
Vista = pants

That doesn't mean that they aren't good though does it?
People point it out as if id have been any better off getting a worse card when i made my computer.. but then when the NEW dx10 cards come out id have to buy another card.. what would you have had me do?
Im not having a go at you specifically, just people who act all high and mighty, if i didn't buy a computer part because it was going to become not the best within a year or half a year i wouldn't have a computer. -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! The reason why im stuck with vista is because i wanted a new computer and sadly noone is selling computers with xp. I don't want to buy my computer from a company like Dell, because I hardly know what crap they put in the computer. And what/ made you such a godlike creature that got the ability to analyse my intelligence by reading two sentences?
Anyway, I dare you to look through the shops nearby me to see if you can find a computer with XP. I know you won't because you fail. --- Signature radius: 150 mm Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

Compared to what you get from online stores, local shops are almost at the same level in price. The difference is that local shops generally have more friendly people working and you get the service you deserve. Big online shops are a nightmare (my old computer was bought by one of the largest in my country) and when my motherboard failed i was charged for ú65 for the time they used to localise the error -.-
And if you want you can always haggle
edit: It would be too expensive to buy from an EU-based corporation because of your VAT. --- Signature radius: 150 mm Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

You can't have looked terribly hard. Most places still sell XP, that I've seen, both online and in person.
In fact, the only shop I've seen that wasn't selling XP ready PCs was Curry's, but they're all corporate shills anyhoo.
I wish I had so much money to burn that I could buy something I really didn't want just to save me looking harder ------
