Ok, for all you really smart computer guys I have a question for you:
I opened up the market tab and did a search for the item I wanted to purchase, then when all the buy and sell orders were visable I clicked on export. It saved a text file to my documents which I have, now it comes up looking like garbage and it really doesnt do me any good in this format.
EX//2.15,528040.0,34,32767,522154218,528040,1,False,2007-09-17,14,60011359,10000064,30004988,6
So looks of stringly text and while it has the data I need it's hard to read. I want to take this and put it into excel so that I can make sense of it, question is how? I know that the comma's are separating the different fields or values and I would like to make an excel chart that shows the following:
Price | Amount
So really I want the first two value sets as the rest is not important to me at this time and I figure that once I figure out how to pull that data I can continue to update the sheet as needed.
Thanks, I know you guys will offer at least some tech advice, as long as it doesn't hurt your profits that is!

Not sure that I understand your question, but if this is it: Quote: want to take this and put it into excel so that I can make sense of it, question is how? I know that the comma's are separating the different fields or values and I would like to make an excel chart that shows the following: Price | Amount
Then all you need to do is import it into Excel using the CVS import option, then delete the columns that you don't want.
If you are trying to make sense of the other columns then you need to cross-reference most of them with the data dump.

Ok, thanks I feel damn stupid now cause once I actually went through the wizard and converted the file to a cvs file it worked perfect.
Now, does anyone know why the systems are listed as numbers instead of by their names? Does this mean that I need to manually make the connection between the system (EX//JITA) and the number on the export (EX//1003847)?

It is exported as the number so that it keeps the file size to a minimum. As I said in my previous post, cross-reference it with the data dump to make it easier to use. It would help if you imported the whole thing into Access or another DB program as it is easier to relate tables with each other if you use the proper tools.

Yes, you need to manually do it. Or manual use the Find/Replace tool.

Do any of you guys actually use the data exports? I've never really found it useful to know ever single buy/sell order. I just use the highest buy and lowest sell order of a relevant volume and type them in manually into spreadsheets I have made for different purposes.
I can see where it could be useful and you can do a lot with the information, like what eve-central has done. But to me the time spent on building something robust enough to make use of it just has not been worth it.
What have you guys done with the info?

I don't know if you'll get real answers, but I can say that there is a LOT of really cool stuff that you can do with market exports.
One hint, expand your horizons. The market data can put a small player on the same level as a major trader. Assuming the little guy is willing to put in the work and knows what to do with the data.

It never fails to surprise me how casually people try to ask this question. Yes, this information is powerful. Yes, I've collected alot of it. No, I will not say what I've done with it. That should be more than enough a clue as to if you should do it. That is not enough to tell you what to do with it. Always remember, the smart people usually won't tell you what you are asking. They'll be doing it and not want you doing it too. Like me.

Yes, extremly usefull.
Originally by: shags ... type them in manually into spreadsheets
With the exports and API keys you can accomplish this in a matter of seconds.

I think that falls under the category of proprietary information. There are spread sheets and others tools that are every bit as complex as their real life counterparts.
