Angels are known to have very poor explosive resists, so when I'm ratting in my drake I use explosive missiles.
Now here's the thing:
Drake has a bonus of 5% damage of kinetic missiles per level.
The second lowest resist that Angels have is kinetic.
I have "battlecruiser III", so that's a 15% bonus to kinetic damage.
Will kinetic missiles do more damage than explosive ones? Or will I have to stick with explosive and only be able to blow up 500/650k BSs?

For perfect skills (Battlecruiser 5) using kinetic is ALMOST as good as explosive because fo the Drake's bonus, but it is still marginally better to use explosive. For less than perfect skills (as in your case) it is considerably worse to use kinetic missiles.
For Algel Seraphins for example the explosive resist is 49% and the kinetic 60%. So you inflic 51% of your explosive missiles base damage with explosive missiles and 40*1.15 = 46% of your kinetic missiles base damage with kinetic missiles.
For Angel Commanders the resists are 40% and 50%. So you will inflic 60% of your explosive damage and 50*1.15 = 57.5% of your kinetic base damage.

I would use the charts of http://www.evegeek.com/ to compare, they're not perfectly accurate, iirc, but they oculd give you a hint.

Kinetic is better. Period. I mainly use my raven but when i use a drake i can see the ships melt faster then with expl.

The facts. Against an Angel Seraphim (BS, 1.85m). Explosive missiles will do 2% more dps than kinetic with battle cruiser level 5.
Against an Angel Commander (BS, 0.5m). Kinetic missiles with battle cruiser 5 will do 4% more dps than explosive missiles.
Against an Angel Phalanx (Cruiser, 110k). Kinetic missiles with battle cruiser 5 will do 9% more dps than explsive missiles. With BC 3 kinetic missiles will do less that 0.5% more dps.
Against an Arch Angel Phalanx (Elite cruiser, 360k) Explosive missile will do 7% more dps than kinetic with battle cruiser 5.
So it depends what you are shooting at, but in general the harder the target is to kill the more important it becomes to use explosive missiles. If you have a low BC level the only targets kinetic missiles will be better against is frigates, if you have a high BC level they will also be better against most cruisers and low level battleships. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

Edited by: James Grand on 18/09/2007 01:29:00 The reason it depends so much on the target you're shooting is because NPC resists tend to scale in a linear fashion. As a result, the amount of unresisted damage does not scale linearly. For example, the Angel 500k BS has 70/40/50/60 resists, whereas the 1.85mil BS has 79/49/59/69 resists. This means that 51% of Explosive damage gets through against a 1.85mil BS instead of 60%, a 15% reduction. However, only 41% of Kinetic damage gets through instead of 50%, an 18% reduction. Thermal and EM fare even worse (a 22.5% and a 30% reduction respectively.) Thus, the right ammo to use may vary from NPC to NPC because the damage won't scale linearly.
In your case, Explosive will perform better than Kinetic if the NPC's bounty is greater than 72,500 ISK. Otherwise, you're better off using Kinetic.
P.S. Train Battlecruiser IV, you won't regret it.
