Surprisingly price is effected by something generally termed "supply and demand".
In eve, when supply is too low, a majority of/all the sell orders are purchased. This allows sellers to inflate their margins considerably and is generally accompanied by utterences from sellers like 'w00t'. Buyers on the otherhand pay the price if they want the item. Most buyers are lazy and won't even go 2 jumps to save a few mil.
Due to the desire of players to maximise their profit, the price generally drops slowly back to normal levels. In some circumstances the price remains at the new level and trades as it did at the old level.
Most high demand goods (like hardners), are a must for anything bigger than frigate and so sell well relatively independant of the price.

I'm wondering WHY supply shifted left or demand shifted right (or maybe NPCs started selling Armor Thermic Hardeners for 2mil, the equivalent of a price floor).
Did everyone suddenly start doing more EM damage? All other hardeners have fallen in price or stayed flat so this seems possible. I'm looking for an explanation specific to the item, not something generic about supply and demand.

Several reasons, all reasonably likely.
1. Supply dried up temporarily, I see this happen every now and then and it makes me a lot of isk.
2. Someone manipulated the market.
3. Someone discovered they were selling for more elsewhere, bought a bunch and sold them for a profit.
4. The t2 producer cba selling there due to low demand and went elsewhere.
5. Inventors in the region fell on hard times.
The possibilities are miriad and all have the same effect. Due to the spike in volume on the graph, I'd lean toward someone transporting the goods elsewhere for profit.
In order to narrow it down, you'd need to look into there being a spike in volume in other hards or related items. If nothing else spiked at that time, I'd lean towards a trader being responsible.

Edited by: Danari on 19/09/2007 06:09:15 Energized Adaptive Nanos had a cpu increase, which pushed demand for less demanding tanking mods. This occurred in about the timeframe you mention. I would guess that since supply didn't increase to take advantage, inventing hardeners isn't really worth the effort.

That graph is not telling the whole truth. Take a look at the same graphs for Jita or Rens and you will see they go the other way (price has been dropping for the past 6 months).
My guess is that the Citadel graph reflects buy orders more than sell orders, i.e. someone had a region-wide buy order up for 1.1 mil and there was little or no supply on the sell order side.
