Ok today i thought i was onto a good exploration site in 0.4, lace looked empty and i was so close to clearing the area, all of a sudden 3 other played blasted me and my ****** caracal into a million bits lol, rather annoying i was hoping they'd take pity on me, as am only a lowly noob. Anyway the 1st thing i have done is upgrade my clone and am heading back to where my little selection of puny ships are.
Now because of my shifts at work etc i am still on lvl 2 missions and not very rich (50mil) my sole source of income at the minute is mining/missions/salvage. i have 3 options to me and this is where i need the advice.
a. use an already owned puny ship, kestral or merlin i think i have both b. buy and fit another caracal c. skip the caracal and buy and fit a drake
also need to keep out of lowsec for now lol........a hard lesson learned |

Yeah, low sec sux if you're not paying attention.

Probably best to stick with high sec exploration, concentrate on Radar and Combat sites, build up your ISK and skills. Much safer and easier than low sec, rewards are about the same with less risk. |

50m ... I would think twice about flying a Drake you barely have the ISK to replace and fit it.
High sec missions and anomalies would be best I think in your situation. |

If you take a few to figure out how they caught you and how to escape the next time, your probably ok with another caracal.
I'm not sure what your frig skills are like, but the merlin / kestral could work for some of the low end radar sites and DED's.
As mentioned before, probably best not dragging a drake into lowsec when you only have 50mil to burn :)
If your a bit off on how they caught you, don't be afraid to convo the guys who blew you up. Many in Low sec will shoot first and take questions later.
The guys who blew you up could be the nicest guys you'll ever meet if you start asking for tips. |

This, in fact, has been my experience roaming around in low sec. The dudes that blow me up are usually super cool to chat with. I have inundated them with tons of questions (which they have been very willing to answer). They have freely offered good advice and tips, AND some have even offered to replace ships so I can give it another go in a round of 1 on 1 with em. Low sec really is a neat place. Helping to make high sec a scarier place; one carebear at a time. |

I've spent 20-30 minutes chatting with people I've blown up. I link my fit and explain where they went wrong from my perspective.
The next time you see that person then maybe you'll get a better fight. Maybe you never see them again - which is usually the case. Worth spending a little time for a better fight though.
The starter npc corps are full of people who will tell you low-sec/null is instadeath and everyone there are tossers. The people giving this advice have spent their entire Eve "life" (usually measured in years) in the starter npc corp.
Whenever someone tells you that then go look at Battleclinic killboard to see what experience the person telling you has. You'll normally find they have no experience other than they once took a short-cut which went wrong. I wouldn't listen to anything they have to say apart from high-sec PVE, where they will have a clue. |

No one will take pity on you. EVER. A kill is a kill is a kill. Doesn't matter if your fresh meat or Chribba if you can be caught and killed they will do so when the opportunity arrises.
When you enter lowsec your given a warning for good reason. It means anything you choose to do on the otherside of this gate is your own fault.
Im sorry to hear about your ship loss. I lost a vexor a long time ago when I was foolish enough to accept a mission in low sec. I only made that mistake once. From there on out any ship loss I had was intentional and caused by risk I personally decided to undertake. In other words. No tears when I lost it. |

I am one of a million Drake pilots- for your PvE needs it's hard to beat from level 2, 3, and some 4's.
Just pricey, you'll seriously want to stay out of low sec unless you are PvP fit.
However- a Drake is horribly slow, even a nano'd one is a bit of lumbering ox, and will be that much harder to get aligned and get to warp if you get jumped in low or null. If you are planning on running sites in low or null, a Caracal might actually be better, if slower to clear rooms. It's still no greyhound, but if someone warps in on your plex, you can GTFO much faster than in a Drake. Costs less to lose too.
Anytime you leave Empire space, you should be twitching on the D-Scan button like a junkie on day three of detox. I'm surprised that female voice that tells you that your warp drive is active- hasn't broken down and screamed at me to leave the poor D-Scan be. Learn it, Live it, Love it......D-Scan.
Lastly, as a total last ditch escape tactic, you can launch jammer drones and hope they land the one jam you need to break a lock if you're pointed. Sort of like expensive chaff or flares. Ideal? No, but if you're not PvP fit, then anything you can do to get away is worth it's weight in gold-- if it works. |

Hey.... and welcome to Eve!
Like a couple of the previous posts have said, you can learn alot from the peeps who blew you up. Afer a couple huge, and I mean HUGE isks losses via ganks and/or traps, one of the guys who blew me up was super nice, and offered a great deal of advice on how to increase (or avoiding) my chances of surviving the next time. And since then I have not been blown up... :)
Of course, since then I have been much more careful, and set myself up with the proper ship(s).
You may also look into courier contracts as a small (at first) source of more income for yourself. Feel free to hit me up in game for whatever my 2 cents are worth. I'd be more than happy to help. I was helped out alot too when I was first starting out, and it's great to see your additude of learning thru our mistakes...cuz in Eve thats one of the best ways to advance.
And of course, its a guarantee that will not be your first ship loss... Good Luck! |

Only time i've been blown up so far was when I was on autopilot in my shuttle .... so basically, my own stupid fault ;)
Didnt lose a ship, but lost a set of +4 implants. For me, very costly as I'm only just coming up to 3 months old ....
Learnt my lesson though, no more AFK travelling for me! |

You've got two things going on with your EVE career - one of them is making money and the other is spending it.
You don't need that Drake to run Level II missions. The Caracal will do just fine and is much cheaper. Even if you got a couple of Drakes for free - look at what they cost on the market - and that is what they are worth to you - as in - you could just sell them.
Once you get to Level III missions - then take the Drakes out and use them.
Don't run missions in Low Sec with your top of the line ship. That ship is your money maker - don't take it down to Lo Sec and get it blown up.
Going down to Lo Sec - is all about PVP. You can make money down there - but that's not what it's about. So - if you're looking to make money - stay in Hi Sec. Then - when you want a fight - go down to Lo Sec and you'll get one.
Also - notice how you got hit by more than one guy. If you're going looking for trouble - better to bring some friends of your own.
Now, if you just want to practice in Lo Sec - first read all the Lo Sec Guides and start practicing using their techniques in Hi Sec. Get used to how things operate so that you're not fumbling around trying to figure out which button to hit while someone is trying to kill you. Then take a ship you can well afford to lose down to Lo Sec - and do a live trial down there. See how well your techniques work. You can run missions or mine or explore - it doesn't matter - just do something to get in some live practice with a cheap ship you can afford to lose.
Be aware that much of what you'll be doing is running away. Learn to judge whether or not you can take someone on. Learn how to avoid those you can't take on. Then - when you think you've got an edge and can take them - go ahead and attack. You'll probably lose but it will be good experience.
Once you've gotten to the point where you can survive fairly well - then try something more serious - but don't use your main money making ship to do it. Keep that thing in Hi Sec and use it to fund your Lo Sec PVP adventures.
Then - when you get a better money making ship - you can take your now second line ship down to Lo Sec if you want.
Also, some practice in group PVP might be good - as that is not the same thing as going solo. Red vs. Blue or Factional Warfare is a couple of places you can get some sustained PVP. Just get yourself a whole bunch of cheap ships, like frigates, to start with and plan on losing a lot of them.
Remember - don't fly what you can't afford to lose. Affording to lose something means you have the ability to replace it. Thus - if you can't buy two of them - you can't afford to fly one of them.

There is no pity for noobs coming into low sex that just want the gudsites. Staying out of low sex except for the gudsite loot drops will continue to be your problem. |

OP, just want to say you are doing it right. Getting out there and trying it is the best way to learn how it works. Choosing an inexpensive T1 cruiser for your first excursion into losec was the right thing to do. Also, the Caracal is an excellent cruiser. With skills, it can take out a lot of ships that you wouldn't ordinarily try for.
Most of the advice given above is spot on. I also would not take the drake out to losec if I could not easily replace it with isk on hand. Save it for the hisec missions. Most folks won't bother suicide ganking it. Once you have your core fitting, missile, and shield tanking skills up, then you can consider tryng it. I would also recommend going with some trusty brosefs.
Your best friend in hostile k-space is not so much the d-scan, but local. D-scan is a good supplement. But won't tell you anything if they are in a cloaky recon or bomber. If you see anyone that is not blue to you in local, assume they want to kill you, and prepare to gtfo. That means actively aligned to either station, POS, or a safespot. I would also recommend you learn cloaking and fit at least a prototype cloak in your utility high-slot (for the Drake). Yes, that will gimp your lock time. But for PvE, that is not an issue.
On the Caracal, don't bother with a cloak. Its just not worth it. "How do you kill that which has no life?" |
