If you're happy doing em slow, then sure. A drake can handle the aggro.
If you don't have the skills for a raven, I'd say stick with L3s til you do. If you really want to do L4s, just avoid the super hairy ones and you'll be fine.

Properly set up, it can tank them just fine. Damage isn't great, but it will do the job, especially if you have 5 Hobgoblin IIs to help you out. ------------

hmmm well... i didnt wanna buy a raven. only got 350 k lp. and no. The drake with passive tank. Shield purger rigs etc, DIDNT handle the aggro :p 20 - 30 frigs and 2 battleships was the aggro. So i guess ill be grinding isk or selling stuff to replace the losses..

My drake runs level 4s just fine, are you making sure to use rat-specific fittings?

A fully-passive tanked Drake with all slots dedicated to said tank can handle 709 DPS versus Thermal and 946 DPS versus kinetic when tanked against those. I'm pretty sure that's enough for the worst of the level 4s when aggro is properly handled.
This is with mediocre shield skills and the damage output is totally worthless, but it sure can tank.

I'm running straight t2, no faction, t1 rigs and I have no problems.
High: 7x heavy launchers, 1x drone link augmentor Mids: 3x Large Shield Extender T2, 1x T2 Invuln Field, 2x Rat Specific passive resists Lows: 3x Shield Power Relay T2, 1x Ballistic Control Unit T2 Rigs: 3x Core Defence Purger rigs
You should be able to handle most missions with this as long as you don't agro everything at once. If you swap out the BCU for another SPR you can even tank the L4 angel extravaganza bonus room.

Scott Ryder, fit your Drake just like this guy and you won't have any problems. Using faction gear on a Drake won't make that much of a difference tbh. The only exception is maybe all the heavy launchers are Caldari Navy or Dread Guristas which will help out in the DPS department.
And the core purger rigs are the lynch pin of this setup. I have done a crapload of lvl 4's and haven't lost a Drake yet. Drake is the best ship for lvl 4's because of the afk tank you can have, although it will take a long time to finish a big mission.
I am curious though, what fittings did you have on that you lost 600 mil on a Drake . I am assuming you had the CN launchers only?

Just the launchers.. Most of the launchers where traded for lp so it wasnt really a huge loss. But it still sucks, im rather new to this pve thing, but most of the ships on that mission where scrambling me and i was told to use active hardners instead of passive. So eventually i capped out.

Try this setup, and you won't ever cap out:
7x Arbalest HML 1x Drone Link Augmentor
2x LSE II 4x Rat Specific Active Hardener IIs
1x BCU II 2x PDS II 1x SPR II
3x Shield Purger Rigs
With better energy skills, you can replace one of the PDS IIs with another SPR II or another BCU II. I have run this setup with no problems in hundreds of Level IV missions.
Always use EFT to make sure you can permanently run the setup you intend to use. ------------

you have to remember tactics are superior to fittings in missions. Sure, you can fit properly but that only gets you so far if you dont plan out the mission or you become sloppy.
At the high end with officer fittings where you tank until downtime you shouldnt have many problems but forgetting where you are for example on the first level of worlds collide it is not going to matter what you fitted - you are going to die.
So, keep your wits about... fit smart and play smarter. This is not a warp in, F1 - F8 and wait game. . |

I'm guessing you went up against blood raiders. That red glow around your ship was them sucking your cap right out.
Also, skills make a huge difference. Skill-based resists on a drake are NOT stack nerfed with modules, so someone with BC5 has a huge tankable DPS leg up on someone with just BC2.
I also recommend a Raven for L4s. Be sure to use the mission database to know what to kill first. I've had a few wake up calls in my CNR due to being sloppy, but overall I like the raven 1337x better than a Drake. Even though I've got less tank with the CNR.

Yeah, lot of people like ravens. I personally like being able to tank 2 of them and sentry guns while blowing them up :P
