However multiple cores still work fine. I have XP Home, no problems here.
From Wikipedia, the primary Professional features Home doesn't have:
Quote: # The ability to become part of a Windows Server domain, a group of computers that are remotely managed by one or more central servers. # A sophisticated access control scheme that allows specific permissions on files to be granted to specific users under normal circumstances. However, users can use tools other than Windows Explorer (like cacls or File Manager), or restart to Safe Mode to modify access control lists. # Remote Desktop server, which allows a PC be operated by another Windows XP user over a local area network or the Internet. # Offline Files and Folders, which allow the PC to automatically store a copy of files from another networked computer and work with them while disconnected from the network. # Encrypting File System, which encrypts files stored on the computer's hard drive so they cannot be read by another user, even with physical access to the storage medium. # Centralized administration features, including Group Policies, Automatic Software Installation and Maintenance, Roaming User Profiles, and Remote Installation Service (RIS). # Internet Information Services (IIS), Microsoft's HTTP and FTP Server. # Support for two physical central processing units (CPU). The number of CPU cores and Hyper-threading capabilities on modern CPUs are considered to be part of a single physical processor, therefore multicore CPUs will work fine under XP Home Edition.
Most of these aren't particularly useful for most users; some are outright useless, for example the encrypted file system option is far inferior to the free TrueCrypt.

Pro is built for networking whereas Home is restricted on a network.

If you have a choice, and are not really worried about the extra bit of cash for pro, get it.

All I know is that Pro seems to run better for me. It gets clogged up less quickly, and on my old comp, Home resulted in a keyboard problem during boot, it couldn't find one, but Pro could.
So I like Pro more.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

i dunno. i'd consider being able to join a domain pretty damn useful.
remote desktop is handy if you can't install vnc/logmein/putty/whatever on the computer you're accessing it from. iis is nasty but handy if you're playing with asp.net, and the group policies/ACL stuff is ok too.
home also has some god awful 'multimedia' content you will want to kill off too as far as i can remember, but it's been a while since i had a play with home edition.
