I consider myself a very casual player of Eve. Your typical weekend warrior (at times) and maybe 3-5 hours during the week.
I have also long wanted to run a corp. I have started a couple here and there, but really, it takes a lot of time, which I don't always have. Real Life is dynamic.
Kind of an inhibitor.
I'd like to think, however, that it is possible, so long as my pockets are sufficiently deep.
Does anyone have any experience with being a casual player and running a corp? I envision a good amount of time spent recruiting, then dropping off bell curve style. I would like to start something that long outlives my stay in Eve.

My experience is that it does not work.
Gathering low-motivated people in a "casual" corp leads to inactives. Your mausoleum will crumble within months.

Maybe I should elaborate what I meant when I said "sufficiently deep pockets".
Why can't I run it like a REAL corp? Have my employees, who I pay regularly, tend to the daily tasks I simply cannot. It's not like I would never be around or anything. I can log in, check mail, perform the mindless executive stuff, etc.
It just sounds like a fun idea regardless. Whether it were possible in Eve or not remains a mystery.

There is nothing worse than a semi-active CEO. Trying to think of EVE corps like RL corps falls flat on its face.
People play EVE to be entertained, be it by shooting peeps or by doing other activities.. and they expect leadership and certainly a level of presence which you cannot seem to afford. You could try and share leadership with people you trust and who see things like you do.... and try and do things that way, so that there is always somebody around to keep peeps happy.
But trying to run a corp a few hours a week and at the weekend won't work.
Running a corp is time consuming, there is no way round it. Its more akin to running a an activities centre or a social club .. you have to be there.

Well isn't that why there's a chain of command? I mean seriously, think about it...
Do you think each and every Initrode employee talks to the CEO(s) every single day for hours on end?
What's wrong with sending out weekly letters with further correspondence with your immediate subordinates who run their own dept with their subordinates. This is the way it works, and since Eve comes prebuilt with the components to simulate this, why shouldn't it be possible?

Edited by: Ackaroth on 26/09/2007 09:55:45 Pretty sure that wont work very well. Firstly, you will need to recruit ALOT. I see year old corps with less than 30 people in them all the time. Also, sure, you can pay people to do the tasks, but gonna take some startup time to figure out who is director material, both trust and vision wise. Your XO/VP/Co-Ceo needs to have the same desire to further the corp as you. As said by others, doesn't go well in eve. Slightly pipe-dreamish... feel free to try tho.
*EDIT* - Also, while the "casual" tag may appeal to a certain group, you can never plan on doing anything large with the corp. "Casual" players dont have the time or the dedication to do things of merit, like 0.0 stuff... :)

I have been a member of various corps and alliances who were very "alliance/corp-focused", but eventually real life caught up and I formed my own one man corp so I could play my own way in my own time.
I thought a lot about opening up my corp to "casual" players, people like myself with real life commitments and the inability to dedicate hours every night to Eve.
Eventually I decided against it, as being responsible for other people in the game would have been a type of commitment in itself.
And anyway, since then I discovered DEREK - an alliance with a philosophy that I can live within without screwing my extra-Eve activities!
