Edited by: Garaboldi on 02/10/2007 09:06:41 Hi there,
I've been reading the forums on and off for over a year, I've watch the discussions take place and peoples threads go up in flames (Puts on flame resistant overalls!). I've heard so much about scams and spies, griefers etc...It got me wondering, and that wonder has lead me to post today.
I would like to ask the wise Eve community, (mostly Goons I know from recent posts) one question for a sensible discussion about ôis the world ready for eve.ö
In this discussion I would like to ask old and new players, including the developers and CCP forum moderators etc please I would really like to know peoples thoughts what they think eve promotes i.e. good community spirit, lying, team working, profiteering...you get the gist...please discuss sensibly and I open the floor to you the whole of the eve community.....

EVE really just consists of making as much money as fast as you can to either sell Game Cards, or blow other people up. Along the way you pick up some social and team work skill.
The #1 thing EVE promotes however is, patience.

I don't think EVE promotes anything in particular, it simply gives options and lets someone choose how they would like to play.
If you want to be a lying cheating bastard, then you go be a lying cheating bastard.
If you want to be a nice guy and work together as a team for the good of everyone, then you do that.

Eve promotes having fun and provides a very wide variety of means to do so. It's that simple actually. If you're not having fun you're doing something wrong.

I'd have to say it promotes creativity. You're not told what to do but are instead given some toys and a sandbox to play in. How deep the gameplay can be is down to you and your imagination.
This has lead to players creating original professions of their own often with a fair amount of success (ore theft, Innonimate Nightmare's adventures, espionage/sabotage, diplomats, the Eve Guardian newspaper, Pulgors solutions, the ISS public outpost project and so on).

Lol that made me laugh, but please back to the topic is the world really ready for a game like eve that is a sandbox, no end game, very close to real life dynamics?

I'd agree with that, but add one addenda; Occasionally the sandbox owner will grab one or more of your toys, snap them and give you back the pieces, saying 'here I made some changes to that, tell me what you think.' Kinda like real life tbh you are always having to adjust to the new reality of any given situation.

Let me try and expand my question, lets see...I know that eve has been out for a good few years, and has rightfully won a lot of awards...my question is, is eve before its time? Does the RL world understand what this game is really about? That is the type of questions I want people answer or discuss...
Does that help?

Well EVE is very innovative in the way it breaks the mold for character development. There is no structured hierarchical approach to it consisting of levels. In addition to the higher learning curve maybe players are overwhelmed by the fact there isn't always a step by step path to create the character they want to be. Too much freedom is hard to get a grasp on at times.
I find EVE to be a tremendous relief from games I've played in the past where if you don't do everything cookie cutter you are gimp.

ôWar is not the dreadful end to all things as mankind fears. Conflict brings balance to nature as it adapts, mutates, and transforms itself into something stronger than before. Mankind is the master of nature because we can choose those mutations on our own accord. We can accelerate the inevitable dominance of a species. Through war, we can make ourselves stronger at the time and place of our choosing. War is not hell, far from it. War is beautiful. War is divine.ö - Grand Admiral Mekioth Sarum, excerpt from a commencement speech to Paladin graduates of the Imperial Academy, 23215 AD |

EVE promotes imagination. This was already said by someone but I think that pretty much sums it up. You don't have the usual "guidance" that most people are used to from other MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, SWG and other rather simple games. The only other online game that offers anywhere near as much freedom would be Ultima Online but thats still pretty limited - whats cool about that are the possibilities to role play and you're pretty free to create whatever kind of character you like.
EVE takes this freedom a hole step further by giving you a totally free sandbox and some tools and then letting you make your own game for yourself.
But is the world ready for EVE...? Well... I don't think so. I'd say about 99% of all MMORPG-Players are not used to such an open universe and simply can't cope with it. They need nice little step-by-step quests and they need to be rewarded on a regular basis because they think it's fun if you get everything you want with little effort. They also can't cope with the idea that success is not permanent. If you loot your uber Epics in WoW then you have them for ever and no amount of evil gankers will ever take them away from you. Even if you have an IQ of 5 and go attack every player you see and go attack an enemy HQ you still won't actually be risking anything. If you die then you simply respawn, run around for a moment and then you're back in action. If you're a r####d in EVE on the other hand then you'll be podded back into a noob clone before you can say "wtf you're so ebil!!!11". I think most people don't actually want to risk anything and thats way they can't deal with EVE when they come from any other online game.
Another main reason why EVE has more problems in getting new players is also largely due to game magazines. Usually the people that test EVE-Online are the same people that also tested WoW and all the other trash and since you take about a week to complete the basic EVE tutorial, most of the testers get a totally wrong picture of EVE and of course the game tests in the magazine also end up being a load of male cow *****. If I had only read the tests in many (german) game magazines then I doubt I would have ever started playing EVE.
So no, I think the (MMORPG-playing) world is largley not ready for EVE-Online. Thats also why EVE "only" has 200k players and not 9 mil like WoW and all the others.
Just shows you.. just because 50 billion flies eat crap every day, doesn't mean crap tastes nice. |

I have to agree. But I'll emphasize -unrestrained- human nature. It is more or less implied. And as such, people do what they want to do which is inevitably what they find fun! And that is why we play a game. Any game.

Eve doesn't promote anything, its a game. If you feel that a computer game has altered your behaviour in anyway I suggest you stop playing and consult your local doctor.
