Not that impressive...all he has to do is land flat and the water absorbs most of the impact without him sinking into it much...granted, it'll sting like hell but no harm done. --------------- Originally by: CCP Prism X Hey I have an idea: "Let's not endure any more of your spam for the weekend!" That guy is crazy, and really funny. His stupid getup plastered with American flags, what the crap?
"Well I was at this place and I saw a kids pool and was like 'I have to jump into that' and so I did and then I just kept going higher and higher".
What kind of reason is that?
And what makes it even better is the Japanese. They can make anything seem really awesome, all in their suits and stuff to watch some guy jump into a paddling pool

OK, we must have a few physics bods in here somewhere.
Can anyone be bothered working out the energy involved in this guy hitting the water and answer the questions:-
1. How far does he have to jump from before the impact is unsurvivable?
2. How much damamge would he do if he got it wrong and landed feet/head first?
I'm told that hitting a body of water at sufficient speed is just like hitting a concrete wall, but what speed?

Was kinda thinking on the lines that just as he heads out on his short trip the childs garden pool pops, would not like to see that reaction.

I'm told that hitting a body of water at sufficient speed is just like hitting a concrete wall, but what speed?
If he falls 10.7m from rest, his speed at the instant of impact is 14.5m/s, or 52.2km/h, or 32.4mph.
The energy is 252kJ, assuming his mass is 100kg.
He comes to a rest within 0.3m, the depth of the water. The collision therefore lasts approximately 0.04s, and deceleration is 375m/s^2, or 38.2g. That's a 37.5kN force acting for that duration, something like being in a head-on car accident at 100mph.
Where it gets complicated is the splashback - roughly an equal volume (hence mass) of water moves past him in the opposite direction, taking part of the collision energy with it. Momentum is conserved, kinetic energy isn't, but quantifying it would be a pain if you wanted to do it properly.
For comparison, the crew of Soyuz T-10-1 survived 14-17g for 5 seconds, and people have walked away from high speed car crashes before. The key is for the impact energy to be fairly evenly distributed through your body (in a vehicle, as much as possible by bodywork), which is the point of what he is trying to do. Get it wrong, and you will get a shear force where you least need it. As in a high speed collision, you can walk away, but you can also just as easily get your neck snapped clean.
The answer is he can die falling from a fraction of that height if his landing isn't perfect.

Get it wrong, and you will get a shear force where you least need it. As in a high speed collision, you can walk away, but you can also just as easily get your neck snapped clean. The same is true in other situations such as encountering a blast wave - you can survive something that kills the guy next to you.
The short answer is he can die falling from a fraction of that height if his landing isn't perfect. As for the survivable upper height limit of that stunt... he must be close to it. The region between no injury and death will be small, anything involving the neck is almost either/or. It would be dangerous to push that boundary - he will never know if he exceeds it.
I don't like you...

Maybe because he's American? You hate my flag that much? It gets under your skin?
