It's probably old news for most people, but while looking for videos of Ambulation, I found this ¡.
I seriously think CCP should buy those guys and their game engine... it looks kinda neat. Only drawback I see to the Infinity project is that it's being developped by hobbyists (meaning it could only be released in 10 years, if at all), and that there's no plans to add avatars yet.
But merge that space engine with EVE's universe, backstory and features, and it's "The" space game XD
Anyways, back to shooting stuff...

Unfortunately their model wouldn't work with CCP's code at all - all of their stuff is generated procedurally, which doesn't work well in massively online games. In addition you'd have to pry in all the basics of game design in EVE and adjust all the physics accordingly. We can dream though. ------------ Whiners - Unite! | Posting and You Tarminic - Forum Warfare Specialist. |

The ships in that site look stupid to me. Do we need another eve. And what makes you think their engine works some what better than CCP's. You cannot tell such thing by looking at screen shots now can you ?
Besides these waring and destruction simulations are not really that aspiring so we would need more of the same. How about really put far thinking future visions into the picture. Something like help younger civizations to evolve. Guide them and help them grow. Plant the seeds of life around the galaxy and discover new Galaxies. Something that does not fully depend on that brain nullifying I gotta kill you caveman mentality.
Every game does not have to be a continuation of the DOOM generation of games.

Hm, maybe I sounded too excited about the game itself, which isn't close to be true.
I agree with the ships and the combat system, they look kind of drab. What I really meant, though is that I really liked how the infinity project works with space travel and the seemless changes of environments, which I didn't see on screenshots, but on actual demos such as this one.
I think the ability to fly into atmosphere and back up in space, the fact you can travel between star systems without jump gates and a few other fun things like bringing passengers on your ship sounded like features that would be fun and are lacking in EVE. My point was that merging them with the universe of EVE Online along with the new Ambulations gameplay element (not saying it's possible, I'm just theorizing here) would make an awesome sci-fi game.
So in short, I don't like Infinity's ship. I don't like their projected flight-sim combat system either. I don't like the lack of aliens or other factions than humans. Yes, I like EVE's Universe and backstory. I like EVE's strategic combat system and I like the projected avatar and Ambulation gameplay. Yes, I like EVE's ships and structure design. Yes, I like Infinity's space/atmosphere travel model. I like Infinity's projected economical and player venues model where you can own even whole planets. No, I don't like EVE's unrealistic scale of objects. I don't like jump gates (and the camps that come with them).
I never said Infinity > EVE. If I thought so, I wouldn't have come back to EVE days ago, but if EVE 2 was to be sort of a good mix of key features of both, I think we would be well on the way to the ultimate space game. Throw in Terraforming, aliens, actual colonization, space abnormalities (a la Star Trek), the ability to discover new locations and I think we'll be getting there.

You can do that using capital ships or jump bridges. Besides, having a stargate network the vast majority of us are forced to use allow for most of the small gang PvP we see today.

While I really don't see a Scorpion or a Typhoon doing anything in atmosphere either than plummeting like an odd shaped rock and a cigar to the ground. I'd love Eve to have those graphics. I just got my 8800 GTX. I can take it! YARRR

Think you missed the point, the thing with Infinity is that you can (supposedly) change server location without a noticeable session change. Translating to an EVE example it would mean changing system without the few seconds wait for everything to load.

No it can't. Infinity can't do a thing - Because it's vaporvare.
I won't believe any of the desiger's (note the singular) insane, megalomanic promises of impossible features until I see them. Which I won't, because that game has been in development forever and will likely stay that way.

one other thing, IMHO a generated univers with millions of solar systems won't work well in an MMO, no matter how well intentioned.
there is the possibility of going months without seeing another person. having a game where you could find an out of the way system nobody goes to turns an MMO into a single player game with lost of users. ----------------------------------------------- I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum"

Yeah, that bugged me as well. Not to mention that procedural or not, millions of systems would take alot of database space and most of it would remain useless for the whole lifetime of the game. Hardly cost-efficient. I think that a few thousands of star systems are more than enough. Even in EVE some backwater systems are pretty empty, and it's cool, it allows people to rat/mine in peace. But hundreds of thousands of unvisited systems... pointless.

I have to admit, a slice of their April Fool's joke post made me laugh:
Quote: - we'll introduce a system of races and skills to make the game more interesting, because we all know that a game without those will be boring. 5 races will be available: the Rrama (directly inspired from A.C.Clarke of course!), the Iradlac, the Etnellag, the Evoj and the Ratamnim.

Gah.
Infinity is not a game, its just a project. My impression is that the only reason why people like it is because its eye candy...well the backrounds are, the ship models looks horrible.
Call to arms!!! |
