I had Tivo record the last episode of Season 3 of Dr. Who and just watched it. As it happened, being unwilling to wait, I had already watched it online. What I noticed was they cut out this part (The Master dancing to the Scissor Sisters song I Can't Decide).
I mean seriously WTF is up with that? Of all the things we have on US tele (which admittedly is more puritanical than our European friends) this should hardly be a blip.
Very disappointed...I really liked that scene.

Edited by: Ixianus on 06/10/2007 18:27:42 America, like Iran, has no ***s. And as this could be considered a marginally *** situation, what with a man dancing in a business suit and giving mean looks to women as he drives around what could be his aged male lover, it was simply too much for the American Audience.
I think we should applaud the censoring service for protecting our mojo and upholding our internationally respected image.
On a side note, it was probably cut for time reasons, but perhaps not.

There was nothing homosexual about it. He kisses his wife and SHE gives him a dirty look (setting up the ending).
If for time reasons there are plenty of other little fiddly bits to axe. This sets the tone, establishes The Master's character, establishes how his wife feels about him and how the staff feel about him.

That was an awesome bit of the episode, why the hell would they cut that out?
Although if adverts are involved, then I suppose time reasons could be a reason, but still, there are better bits to remove.

Looking into this some more seems you are correct. The version shown in Great Britain was 51 minutes long. The BBC did an axe job for the North American market (both the US and Canada).
Hell of a hack job though. And all so SciFi can show stupid promos for its own crap ass shows like Flash Gordon.

Might have had something to do with copyright/liscensing too - it's possible they were allowed to use the song in the UK but not internationally.
I agree it's a great scene though __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus |

Yes, that sounds almost certainly the answer. Amusingly, with everything popping up on YouTube these days, I'm surprised they bother too much nowadays, as they will surely have to move to a different licencing model (eurgh, sorry to go all "management" phrasey on you!) for global sales.

No, Its edited because Sci-Fi and et al need to cut it to 45mins to keep the commercials. The Original episode was 51 minutes long.
I believe Sci-Fi, CBC and BBC-A had the options of running the unedited or the edited versions by the BBC.
Sci-Fi went for edited, BBC-A went for edited then unedited at a later date and CBC went full unedited.

But that's one of the best scenes in the entire series. If they HAD to cut 6 minutes, couldn't they have done it elsewhere? --------------------------------------------------------------------

You know, this is part of the reasons I dont watch TV much anymore. Too much comercials.
Eh. And the TV companies are wondering why less and less people are watching tv. For my part its because I have found a way better source of entertainment: TV series on DVD or The Internet. I simply LOATHE Comercials, and go out of my way to avoid it!

They have the ability to put a marker in the datastream to stop you fast forwarding anything they like.
If you want proof go to the BBC HD demo channel and try to pause or rewind during the rolling demo. You can't do it.
One day no doubt they'll turn it on across the board.

It'll be easy to tell if the American media is censoring the BBC's output.
Wait until they get Torchwood, the Dr Who spinoff.
It's absolutely packed with same-sex relationships and infidelity. Be interesting to see how it is treated in the USA.
The next revolution won't be televised; it'll be pod-cast. |

you don't have the right cable company.
mine has BBC america and BBC america on demand both uncensored dr. who, and uncensored torchwood.
i don't watch either of them on sci-fi
