I am getting bored with frigates already - only been playing for a week - and am looking at Cruisers.. Then I noticed the price. But then I noticed I need Cruiser flying skill. Am I just whining, or how does one afford to learn the skill and buy a cruiser from the market ? In my brief additions, I'm looking at needing between 5-7 mil just to buy a cruiser and learn to drive it. Is this right ? Am I just not making ISK fast enough ? How long does it usually take to upgrade from a frigate to a Cruiser ?
Thanks

Well, you are whining, but I can see how it is difficult for a new player to get started up, so it is a justified whine.
Basically, your quickest way to get isk in a frig is to run alot of missions. Just keep running and running level 1 missions, hopefully for a non-negative quality agent. This should get you up there fairly quickly.
In order to actually fly your cruiser decently when you do get it, I recommend spending the time to train up cruiser to at least lvl 3 and a few of the relevant weapons/tanking skills up a bit so you won't lose the cruiser when you get it.

You can increase the rate that you earn ISK by using a Salvager module on the wrecks left from running missions. Many of the salvage components sell for a nice chunk of change.
Like pandymen said, when you do switch to a cruiser, make sure that you have some supporting skills to back it up. In Eve bigger does not mean better. If you have an over supply of confidence and an under supply of support skills, your cruiser will not last long.

um..sorry to ask but you sound new but are you doing lvl 2 or 3 missions yet.or are you still on lvl 1?
you realise that there are different lvl agents and more rewards right?
you will be fine but you need to do mission for the best agents you can get .

What he said^^, especially in PvP. Don't expect a cruiser to instantly own a frig or you're likely to lose that shiny new cruiser rather quickly.

Most likely he is still running level 1 missions simply because of the diffuculty in running level 2 missions in a frigate. Level 3's are out of the question in a T1 frigate. If he had the money for a T2 frigate then he would not be complaining about the cost of a cruiser.

You are sort of whining, but I understand why. It is hard to get started, but it's nowhere near as hard as it once was. Not that that helps you in any way.
This is how EVE is though: slow. It will get easier and easier to make ISK as you go though, but it will take some perseverance to get there.

The problem isn't that you're not making enough money. It's the fact that when they bumped up the starting SP on new characters, they didn't increase the starting ISK, afaik. So what you run into is a new player that has more SP than they have money to buy new equipment and skill books. The increased SP causes players to get into cruisers before they are financially ready. You have a few options. 1. You can train up Salvage and pick clean the wrecks on your missions 2. You can mine with your frigate and grind away the roids for awhile. There's really no easy answer to getting ISK when you're new. Just don't buy your ISK because you will loose it and get a possible ban. Good luck

Still on level 1 missions I think. Although a couple were pretty tough and may have been level 2 - How do you tell ?

The agent you get the mission from has a little Level number under his name. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

The level of the mission is indicated by the level of the agent. In a TI frig with low skills, Level 2's would be more than "pretty tough" (unless you go rifter passive tank setup). -- I like cheese. |

The level of the agent reflects the level of the missions. I.E. A level 2 agent will always give level 2 missions.
I'm sure you'd know if you tried a level 2 mission in a frig as a rookie. You'd get slaughtered. Fast.

There is a huge difference between flying a ship and flying it well. The deciding factor on when to upgrade ships should be "do I have enough skills trained to equip the equipment I need to fly the ship" (Something is just pathetic about Civilian Shield Boosters on any ship other than an Ibis of Doom.) Even then, that's just adequate for missions or mining. Basic skills will allow you to run most lvl 2 missions in the cruiser, and all Lvl 1's (without warping out for repairs, that is). Good Skills are required, however, for a few of the Lvl 2's. If you haven't saved enough for the cruiser yet, suggest you either run a mining frigate for a week to collect some money, or you train social / Connections up a bit and start running Lvl 2 Courier Missions for an agent for a week. Both can be boring, but it's for a good cause. You can also join a Corp if you join permanently, and many Corps will help new players with basic ships & equipment Remember to save enough for the modules you'll need in addition to the ship. I spent a couple of months in my frigate, training and saving. But then, the Rifter is one sweet ship... Please refrain from posting if you have something to contribute. Thank you. -Hango (http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=496403)

Edited by: Ka Jolo on 12/10/2007 02:16:55 Pirates that fly frigates love new players that fly cruisers. Those kills look impressive on their corp killboard. It's fine to get a cruiser at your point in the game--as has been pointed out, it will let you do level 2 kill missions--just stay out of lowsec until you've "grown into" your cruiser.
In hopes that you might gain new appreciation for frigates: they're faster than cruisers, and can often beat cruisers in a fight. Because they're faster (whether flying, warping, or jumping) and more agile, they can get out of trouble more easily--they can run away, they're harder to hit, and they can usually fight at whatever range is best for them. Because they're cheaper, they're less of a target for other players looking for phat lewts. If you lose a frigate, it's easier to get back in the saddle; if you do manage to scrounge up the ISK right now to get that cruiser, it'll be harder to replace if you lose right away.
For missions, though, almost everything is easier in a cruiser.

It certainly takes longer than a week to earn the money for new pilots and rightfully so.
In skills most new players should not pilot one until they have 3 weeks of combat related training at the very least. It is not only character training but pilot's own knowledge of how the game works and how to fit and use his ship that also counts. Most new players find EVE has a steep learning curve. Some people can get their cruiser first week and fly it around and do fine. But the general advice goes that it would be wise to err on the side of caution and get a cruiser later rather than get it sooner and run more of a risk of losing it.
If you train up negotiations to 3rd level you get immediate access to level 2 missions - no need to run level 1's. Those pay about 500K ISK per mission assuming you get bounties, loot and salvage (rough estimate, but combat mission itself pays about 250K). Running approximately 2 each day will take you about 5 days to get the ISK required for the ship and another 5 days or so will give you ISK for insurance and fittings. Alternatively you can rat in low sec. Those cruisers and battlecruisers there can be killed by new players in frigates given that you're smart and figure out the right tactic against them and improve on your piloting skills (i mean actual player skill). Cruisers pay 80-100K ISK and bc pay 180-200K ISK. For an evening of ratting you can kill 10-20 and make a few mil from bounties and loot (they drop better loot than mission rats). So 2-3 weeks of playing and you got yourself a cruiser. Money making will speed up the more you play EVE, the more learn about how game works and the more player skill you get, and the more skill points your character trains.
