Everyone here refers to speed in km/s. My speedometer chingadera is in m/s.
I've looked and looked and can't find how I change that to km/s so I can know the speeds others are talking about.
Help?
But what do I know? I'm still a noobie.

It will change automatically once you get faster than 1000m/second
Hover your mouse over the speedo while you go into warp, it will switch from m/sec, to km/sec, to AU/sec, and then back down again.
a microwarp drive (MWD) adds 500+% to your top speed. Using one on an already fast ship and you can get 4+KM/second Have a look at the interceptors, crusader and stiletto are two of the fastest
With expensive modules, and implants you can get some ships to 15+km/second -----------------------------------------------

Not true.
I got me little ship up to 1350m/s. It still said m/s.
Am I to assume 1000m/s = 1 km/s?
But what do I know? I'm still a noobie.

That would be a reasonable thing to assume... would it not?

As far as I know the only time the speedometer ever changes to km/s is when you start going into warp. Hover your mouse over it next time and have a look.
It's possible that it will change once you get to an absurdly high number otherwise though, like maybe 100,000m/s, but I've seen the speed contest screenshots saying 50,000m/s, not 50km/s, so I'm going to assume that you're not likely to see it outside of warping.

the short answer to your question is
1000m = 1km
it's faster to type "OMGWTF my uber ship can go 5km/s" than it is to type OMGWTF my uber ship can go 5000m/s
