I am still quite new to the game and working on understanding all of the usefulness of the various skills that are available. In about 1 month I will have the necessary skills to fly an Ishtar. However, I am curious on what other skills I should be looking to train to make myself more effective in one.
Most of my sp are in spaceship command and drones at this point. I don't have too many points in gunnery but my main attributes are perception and willpower so I believe I can train gunnery skills relatively quickly.
Anyway, what are some skills I should look to get trained to fly an Ishtar well? Thanks in advance.

Drones> T2 large. Tank > passive maxed out. Speed> the less cap used on ab and mwd the better. Railguns> small T2

Thanks for the response. However, what do you mean by Tank? In terms of skills that is. I.e. what skills would I be looking at to improve tanking?

Okay, here goes- You have A LOT of training before you will be counted as being able to fly a ship well. Trust me, Ive been going through it for a while now.
Open up a program like EVEMon or even your ingame skillsheet set to show all, get a pen and paper, and go down the list.
Notable points- Mechanic, Engineering, etc.. All the 'name' skills are good to get to V. As soon as you can.
Any skill that affects your cap or its recharge. Any skill that affects your tank ( Choose armor or shield ) and how fast it restores. Anything that affects how well you can fit items- whether it be electronics, turrets or missles.
Most of the Navigation skills you want to train, as it will get you out of some ****ty situations. ( Pretty much everything besides the Jump drive stuff, train. )
If you are going for an Ishtar, you are likely using hybrids right now. Work up for T2 small rails and blasters.
----
I found out the hard way using larger ships that yes, I could technically get into the ship, but I really couldnt fly it worth a damn.
I wouldnt even continue training for the Ishtar yet ( I assume Gallente Cruiser V is the current skill.. Am I right? )
Oh, and train for the learning skills to at least 4/3 if you havent already.. Do those first, because it will cut down on the time for everything else.
So.. Train for: Learning
And then start getting these other skills to at least III and moving on.. Many are needed at V, and depending on your play style and time available, you may want to get each skill to V. I dont know, I like the benefits of getting many to III, and then working up to IV or V as I have time available.
If you want to fly a Ishtar/Vexor well, here is what you are gonna need: T2 Drones T2 Small Hybrids Fitting skills to IV/V Armor tank to at least IV
Learnings to 4/3, skills for tank to III/IV, skills for fitting to III/IV, start working on getting main name skills to V ( Nav, SpaceShip Command, Gunnery, etc. ), if they arent already at this point.
The Ishtar looks like its going to be a solid ship even after the release, so I would make it a goal to fly it very very well at this point. These skills Ive wrote about are likely much more SP than you were looking for, but.. All of it is needed. Get them now, instead of waiting like I did.
Hell, im still working on getting these same skills up. Spend the time now, and it will save you a ton of ISK.

Firstly, thank you for the in-depth reply. I knew that it was going to be a lot of training. While I am training the skills directly needed to fly the Ishtar, I also know that I will need those other skills to pilot it well, and like you said, it would be nice to fly it well and save some ISK.
I do have EVEMon and I have a plan set up to get my Ishtar skills up as fast as possible. I am currently training learning skills as we speak and still have about 2 weeks to go on them before I start jumping into actual skills.
I see now that I really need the base skills of many categories. I think I will schedule those skills in after I finish learning and then continue on the not-as-useful-but-still-needed skills for flying the Ishtar. I'm guessing those extra skills will add anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month on to my current schedule which is fine. I'm not in a rush, I'd rather have the proper skills up to par.
I've actually finished with Gallente Cruiser V . I wasn't playing much for a month and just set that to train and it finished by the time I started feeling like playing again. From the looks of things, that was the longest skill to train by far. If I go directly for all skills needed to pilot the Ishtar at this point, I have around 39 days of training.
This is slightly straying from the topic, I asked this in a separate forum but didn't get a reply, but other than small hybrids what other modules would I be looking to fit onto the Ishtar?
I can't wait to fly that thing. Can't wait to fly it well anyway . Thanks again for the input.

well there are basically two ways you can go with an ishtar- nano or no-nano...i personally prefer no-nano setup that consists of armor tanking, t2 med blasters and some e-war capabilities- this setup is not for solo combat though, rather for gang fights. nano setup uses shield tanking, small hybrids and good navigation skills..its great for solo, worse in gangs
but either way you want to go, you really need to skill up for T2 heavy drones...they take little under a month to get...

Thanks for the replies. I just saw the sticky in the Ships and Modules forum that has setups for pretty much every ship. It was staring me in the face the whole time. /facepalm

Ya, you'd figure that if Heavy drones are the equivilant of BS weapons they would get nerfed out of the ishtar rather then the eos.. I think CCP's logic fails there.
Anyway, I do hope you train for t2 heavy drones as Ishtars don't truly shine until you have them :)
And don't forget about Drone Navigation(Ogres are slowwww) Drone durability, so they don't go pop, and of course drone interfacing to at least 4 I hope.

Yeah, I will be working on getting T2 heavy drones for the Ishtar...Meanwhile I will try to get T2 scout drones for my Vexor. Luckily, I have a lot of sp in Drones already. Drone Navigation is maxed out and Drone Interfacing is at 4. I do need to work on Drone Durability though. ---- In regards to getting nerfed, oh well. I have 93 days of skill training planned out so I will be getting benefits out of all this anyway. By the time I really get to training the skills I actually need to be able to fly an Ishtar I'm sure I will know by then if it is going to be nerfed horribly or not.

Heavy Drones 5 Gallente Drone Specilaization 4 (Ogre IIs) (any other T2 drones you like) Drone Interfacing 5 HAC lvl 4 Medium Hybrid weapons lvl 5 (gun specs for T2 guns) Adv. Weapons Upgrades (AWU) lvl 4 (T2 guns use more grid) Navigation skills to keep you moving out of harms way Mechanic skills to keep your armor topped up (need to use T2 reppers)
Get yourself a +4 implant set if you can afford it - there's a lot to train. These skills will set you up when you move to cmd ships or carrier. good luck Who's the rudest of them all! |
