If something is repeated on the forums enough it must be true, right?
So lately I've seen it said that active tanking is bad for PvP. Something about a buffer tank is better.
I fly a Raven. I suppose "they" are talking about armor tanking. I active shield tank the Raven because I have had a few now and have tried various setups except armor tanking. Passive, no way. XL SB + cap booster + SBA + active hardeners works.
I survive being primaried often. So what the heck?

Shield repairers work way faster and repair more compared to Armor repairers. If you armor tank in PvP, you're better of with a nice hp buffer and resists. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But then you would have survived with a buffer tank anyway:)

Seconded. Unless in the first case you have good information that your target is using neuts, in which case you'd switch to passive to give all cap to weapons.

this comes mostly from larger gangs and fleetbattles where you get melted in one or two salvos when primary, thus leaving not enough time for any sort of repper to be efficient and you are better off fitting for a larger buffer thus making the opponents needing another blast at you. (which won't help you survive but your fleet to win the engagement :p)

I just think the Raven is kind of an exception.
The active tank isn't hard to use. "Oh look little red things on my shield indicator, turn on SB and cap recharger".
Keep in mind I need my lows for DPS.
Yes, once I train up some more relavent skills I guess I'll slap a 1600 plate on. Oh great, a more ponderous Raven.
You say medium gangs = passive tanking. Passive tanking a Raven makes as much sense as flying a Ferox. Not a real option for me.
Are you guys implying that somehow if your enemy numbers around 15 you have a better chance of surviving focus fire passively?
Finally, do you really last longer (squeeze that last few DPS out of your ship) with a HP tank than active with a hold full of boosters? Just curious.

Hey, I thought I'd add my two isk on a low stress thread.
(Yup, bored in the office aswell )
On the outings of PvP I've been out on, mostly Solo or micro gang. The buffer is the way to go. As much as I love the Raven active tanking is a headache due to the massive EM hole in shields. Plus your tank is nerfed due to the PvP standard requirements grabing 3 of your slots. 4 if you fit a cap booster.
I cross trained Gallente and Ammar. Blasterthron still pushes all teh right buttons when it comes to PvP. especially if you can fit T2 guns.

A tank is only viable if your opposition can't break your tank easily. If your opposition can easily break your tank then your are investing a lot for the ability to regen and dont have the time to regen. Thus the theory is not to be able to tank but to create a bigger buffer. Ie, if you have the option of having effectively 60k effective hp with the ability to tank or 120k hp with no tank then the 120k hp option is a better option because they still have to inflict 120k damage to take you out, rather than 60k odd in one or two salvos. You can then invest more in offence.
In smaller encounters tanking is effective, unless the opposition is coordinated and use neuts, then you are pretty much fubar.

This man speaks the truth. There are some exceptions though like the abaddon does really great in 1-5 people combat with a passive. Some other ships too.

So does the shield tank really need an XL size sheild extender, maybe scaling back shield regen so passive tanked BS are not overpowered? That argument is in another thread and does not need to be restarted here. I'm not trying to make the Raven BETTER than other races. I'm trying to learn from experianced PvPers and perhaps pointing out why the Raven is not a good PvP ship. If they turn up the DPS on the Raven some, then I expect to be primaried more.
Hopefully the Raven is getting the higher DPS torps, and in that case we get a midslot damage mod (thats meaningful) a.k.a. the target painter. That would make giving up low slots to plates ok.
Just right now seems the wrong time to jump off Caldari.
