As a newcomer to the game, I am excited by the idea of creating a salvage specialist. That is, an Engineer / Manufacturer who travels the cosmos making a living inspecting wrecks - and perhaps making a few of his own along the way. With this in mind, could anyone enlighten me on suitable ship classes / ship types / ship builds, which would be most suited for this role?
Specifically:
- A salvage ship that can complete PvE missions versus rats. - Caldari vessels specifically. - Cheap but effective. - Suitable for a low skill pilot.
Thoughts and discussion on all aspects of the profession welcome, especially in terms of upgrading to other ships over time.
Thanks for any insight,

Traditionally people use Destroyers as they are fast (for a given value) and have 8 hi-slots meaning you can fit 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers.
If you are intending to do missions at the same time as you rat and salvage, you'll probably be ok upto Lvl 2 missions (fit 4 guns, 2 tractor beams and 2 salvagers) but the general concensus for efficiency is to do the mission, bookmark the wrecks and then go back afterwards to do the looting/salvaging.
I personally use a hurricane (battlecruisers also have 8 hi-slots, a good tank, but are easy to get into sp wise) with cargo expanders in the lows, 4 tractors and 4 salvagers in the highs and shield extenders in the mids along with an afterburner. If was of a mind to rat and loot at the same time I'd fit 4 missile launchers and supplement them with drones to kill on the fly.
So... probably best you use a cormorant, fit salvagers and tractor beams in the highs alongside any weaponary you need for the mission (still advise you loot afterwards though). If you insist on trying to do both at the same time then ensure you can do the mission with max weaponary before you try dropping any of it to loot on the fly.
Point to note. If you are in the habit of towing the wrecks behind you as you fly to the next can and salvage them as you go, don't go faster than 300m/s as the wreck will drift in and out of range for emptying. If you empty them first before trying to salvage them then this of course is not an issue.

Well if you plan on nicking other peoples' wrecks, nothing better than a nano-Stabber (really fast cruiser).
If you plan on salvaging your own missions, I would recommend a destroyer with afterburner, cap rechargers in the mids, cargo expanders/nanos in the lows, and 3-4 tractors 4-5 salvagers in the highs. Cheap (well, the tractors aren't, but relatively), fast, small, decent cargo. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

a good fitting for a cormorant (caldari destroyer RRP 1m): high slots: 4 x tractor beam 4 x salvager mid slots: 1 x mwd 1 x afterburner 1 x cap recharger 1 x small shield booster low slot: 1 x overdrive injector
the reason behind having the mwd AND afterburner is that MWDs dont work in deadspace missions so that is why i have an afterburner fitted.
try towing a jetcan behind by locking onto it with a tractor and collecting the rubbishy loot too...it all sells for ISKs
plus get all skills related to salvaging to at least lvl IV, it helps

Its not caldari but in my opinion, its one of the best salvage setups.
Salvage Coercer
793m3 Cargo Basic Speed 155 m/s Afterburner running 692 m/s My Navigation Skills suck though ;)
Lows Expanded Cargohold II (x4)
Mids 10MN Afterburner II
Highs Small Tractor Beam I (x5) Salvager I (x3)
Rigs Salvage Tackle I (x3)
Drop a rig or two if you do not believe them to be efficient.
Shuffle Salvagers and tractors around as it fits your workflow.
Exchange Expanded Cargoholds for Nanofibers, if you prefer a bit more speed.
